  1. Not even a shit ton of steel drums and filthy bearded hipsters can ruin YYZ. What a total jam that tune is.
  2. Yeah, but I like college basketball!
  3. Oh, man, "Different Strings" is great! Great at volume, great with headphones, nice lyrics. I think he did write most of the lyrics on the debut, and I know we'll never forget classic phrasings like: Ooh, babe, I said I’m comin’ for you, babe. I said I’m runnin’. Ooh yes, babe, I said I’m comin’ to get you, babe. I said I’m comin’. Ooh, yeah.
  4. Isn't that how it works for spiders?
  5. Uh . . . first let's agree that since it's an internet forum, my editing is not as careful or consistent as it would be if it were something professional, but having said that, "a" is for consonant sounds (commentator) while "an" is for vowel sounds (announcer), so it was "a." Anyway, PeW -- awesome album!
  6. You don't really need to know that stuff to know what tone you like the best. Your ears and brain will tell you what you like. And that's why I went ahead and had my say, but I certainly couldn't fake my through a conversation about Geddy's basses for very long!
  7. I will further say this: you lot know much more about Geddy's gear than I do, and I bow to your superior knowledge and discretion!
  8. Is this exciting or depressing? That seems like a lot of derivative material. Even if they bat the avg of the first three phases, that's a lot of dreck. Of course, no one's making me go or spend money, so if this looks good, enjoy! I hope they're great. Are they still using comic stories, or are they on their own? We know how well that worked out for GoT . . .
  9. If you'll forgive my ignorance, even that answer sounds obscure!
  10. Sorry if this is a repeat, but I did not do due diligence by reading the other ten pages of the thread, but did anyone watch the "Documentary Now!" series of parodies from Fred Armisen and Bill Hader? Really funny (most of them) and oddly they give a real appreciation for how hard it is to do a documentary well. The music ones are my favorites.
  11. Okay, just get things moving again, I'll say "Pedal to the Metal" Triumph
  12. Storms overnight have hopefully broken the heat and humidity. It was 110 heat index here yesterday -- and while it wasn't the end of the world -- it was miserable.
  13. Normally, I pronounce it "announcer," but I thought for the non-American patrons that "commentator" was more idiomatic -- although I couldn't really explain why. I guess in American broadcast lingo, Vitale is the color commentary guy, rather than the play-by-play guy, but whenever he's on a game I'm watching he's the "reason I use the must button and read the subtitles guy." I remember when I bought the cassette of PeW and was disappointed in how short it was (about 17 mins a side, I think). That's not much shorter than Hemi or FtK, but divided by three songs? What's this? That disappointment disappeared after a listen or two. It's still not my favorite album, but it may be the best combo of form and function.
  14. Drat! Okay, if we're just talking bass tones, it's the Rick for me. Plus, it just has that classic "look" that my mind's eye summons up when I think of Geddy.
  15. My ears! The pain, the pain! But, yes PeW was an awesome combo of economy and skill. Not a weak link.
  16. Huh, well, I'm partial to the '80s stuff, but I also prefer the fuzzed out bass, so . . . .
  17. I went with Meddle because of "Fearless" and "Echoes." Animals, WYWH, Division Bell, also all great. PF post-Waters > Waters solo
  18. I agree with all your sentiments, but the SATM is a little too Dick Vitale* for me . . . I'll go listen again, just for the smiles. (*For those of you who do not listen to American broadcasts of college basketball, Dick Vitale is an "commentator" whose style is the equivalent of water boarding for the ears. Awful.)
  19. Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner. Most of the characters are deeply troubled and annoying, but the plot is fun, and it's probably worth watching with the sound off, just for the clothing and the Montana scenery porn (although I don't know where it's actually filmed). Man, I wish I looked good in a cowboy hat. I didn't realize Netflix had cancelled Santa Clarita Diet -- that does piss me off!
  20. Truly an outstanding example of what can be done when our will matches our ambitions. A great moment then, and still a great moment now. I don't want shake my fist at clouds and tell kids to get off my lawn, but I'm a little afraid we don't make 'em like that anymore. Maybe we can be re-inspired. I, too, have given "Countdown" some re-listens this week!
  21. "And my doctor said I wouldn't get so many nosebleeds if I'd just keep my finger out of there . . . " I'm beginning to appreciate the performance art/Dadaist quality of these posts . . .
  22. Went to see Stuber with the fam. We laughed, we liked it; I've already forgotten most of it.
  23. Robin was awesome and I now that I know the actress is Uma Thurman's daughter, I cannot believe I didn't think before "my god, that woman looks a lot like Uma Thurman!" I liked Season 3 quite a bit. Better than 2, maybe not as good as 1; it's always hard to recreate that feeling from something the first time through. For instance, I would love to be able and go back and listen to Grace Under Pressure for the first time . . .
