    Is it Over?

I think its a tour when you...tour...5 shows at MSG and 5 in Toronto to me isnt...its a special event....but I guess its all opinion really....
  3. Just remember by far...the vast majority of all music you hear particularly in rock...is 4/4....by far....its what you do in the framework that counts.... Take for example "Bonnie the cat" gavin harrison....4/4...just where he places everything.
  4. Shirley Manson put it best with Kanye....destroyed him http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2986948/Not-musicians-obsessed-charts-Shirley-Manson-calls-West-loudest-clown-town-open-letter.html My problem with much modern commercial stuff is this...using auto tune for vocal lines that hang on a single repetetive note never straying beyond a total of 3 notes to create a "vocal line" is assinine...then combine a total lack of melodic structure whatsover...and a machine like"beat"with no groove at all and you have much of the music industry..."music" on the cheap....it sounds like material made with no care because they don't. You have 20 people co producing they audible piles of horseshit to build their own resume. The problem is so often I lisyen to stuff like that and never come away thinking..."wow..they really mean it".... Something I never feel once hearing any simpler stuff like old Motown...heck or even Nirvana...or much of Shirleys stuff with garbage...deceptively simple...but incredibly well crafted pop. Its not the 4/4 time signature that's the problem....because I bet ALL of you have songs you love in 4/4....book it ;)
  5. Boom boom boom...or ding ding-ga ling....or anything else CAN be "tight" or badass or moving emotionally....simplicity isn't the reason most commercial music is shit..its because there is no heart soul or brains behind it.... Simplicity can be great and very effective...when done with something to back it....and all hip hop feels are not bad.... The trouble is people can Kayne can't do anything a tenth as good as the material on LL Cool Js debut.... Its always best not to stereotype...don't be the "get off my lawn" guy...as a musician steal from every genre...and give back your own interpretation....being close minded while listening only to Rush and bands like Rush is still being close minded...some of the modern bands who aren't labeled "prog" ( but probably should be) mix it all up... I stiil remember a rockline in 84 when Geddy was taking questions from fans... Q: "Uh...izzit true you like ...Devo?" GL: "Yes I do like Devo...I like them very much" Q: (stunned silence) Host: "caller is that the extent of your question?" Q:..."ummm..(you could almost hear sniffling).. yes" I remember laughing at the call....dudes world just disintigrated right there.... Guy gets a chance to talk to Ged..that's what he brings?...Don't be that guy all close minded of other genres....

    Is it Over?

New material yes...4 years from now though? No....the band used their time machine tour as a way to keep chops up and...plllaaayyyy....they won't take 4 years off and record at 65-66 years old... I do think the Alex arthritis thing has been overstated...because the man himself said so...wishes he never brought it up.... Touring like we have seen? Nope...they all have said this too... Is Rush over? No...they have said this many times as well... I would not be surprised by more than one new release either...scale back on live...but continue to create.. NP is never gonna stop playing....Buddy never did....most don't....especially the drummers drummer types...I don't care how achey he says he is....the Gruber thing...the Erskine lessons...his continued interest in learning and improving will win out....
  7. Probably because Neils capacity as a drummer works better in a band enviorment? He's not the type of player to walk in and sight read material he's never played...heck even by CA he was telling Drum magazine he rarely counts when he plays....BOTH skills sets are needed to be a studio player.....
  8. Yep....pretty disappointed that Neil hasn't added bass drums over the years...he should have like 9 of em by now...would be sooooo much more exciting if he had 9 bass drums...he could have a different logo on each like the boring set has on its shells...that boring first half set...whether they are actually playable or not...9 bass drums. ;)
  9. Agree on 2112.... it does sound wimpy by 2015 standards..still I love power ..dynamics...bass...all of it...just don't push it so hard it clips...I think it can be achieved! One thing you notice actually seeing hearing...and feeling Rush live....they have a bigger sound than many of their studio lbums lead you to believe...and that's been the case on every tour I've seen (all since Signals)....they always sound richer live.
  10. Tough call...especially since with the remix version...Freeze went way up in my favorites...and I liked it originally as well...the remix just made it better yet!
  11. Who? My question isn't meant as a challenge. I'd like to know what rock drummers you think are better than Neil. Terry Bozzio Vinnie Coliauta (calls himself a rock..in fact is more diverse) Jojo Mayer (see Vinnie) Mike Mangini...but not Mike Portnoy... I love Neil...but saying he is the best...?...no....got over that thinking long ago. It doesn't make me appreciate his work less BTW....
  12. You guys complaining this hard need to listen a bit harder....holy hell already...gotta say I complete,y disagree on all the bitching about CA dvd....CA in particular grew wings compared with the CD studio version...I also at no point ever had a problem knowing what Neil was playing...seriously. Like the pick for R40 though...very much;)....
  13. I think sometimes Rush's desire to do something different each time out has something to do with it....for example...much of Lees classic era bass playing and tone was very midrangey...sorta Chris Squire like...CA was the first time I can remember a huge low end like that...its very much a BASS sound.... But I really think what people are complaining about is post production stuff....and the loudness war stuff ....
  14. So...the obvious question...when in your view...was that?.... I remember people hating as far back as..1982....by 84 rumors of a breakup were out there and p/g was a tense experience from all accounts....so was T4E apparently from what I remember...
  15. I'll add...people seem to like the sound and maybe...feel of S&A the best it seems...an album born from...hanging...more like the old days... But...I don't know if anyone can artificially reproduce the circumstances of their earlier work....Permanent Waves just....rolls out in such a natural flow....hard to put your finger on what "it"...is...but yes later stuff has a more...labored feel to it....
  16. Well...I agree that some of the "hey let's write alone and send emails" crap can affect things...nd while I also agree S&A overall sounds the cleanest....one thing sounded ...off..to me on that album....neils drums....they sound...ticky..and clicky...and that is an engineer thing...a Nick thing...not even a Neil thing at this point because I get a vibe once he records the tracks...he is done....BTW...its not a damn "DW" thing because I can cite many many artists + myself included) who play DW without results like...that. VT remixed is a vast improvement over VT...huge... CA...like VT has great material..but some squashing going on..&.....believe it or not DVD haters..but the live versions...if anything just brought this further to light...the powerful and dynamic string arrangements in particular.....this I noticed awhile after Nicks remarks of "I hope fans aren't watching graphs instead of listening"..or whatever he said... Peter Erskine once said in regards to giving a strong performance..."bottom line...you have to give a shit"...bingo. Not that Rush doesn't care.....but I sometimes wonder if everything just got ....too big..... Love em...all the same.
  17. Anger wear a crown of thorns reverse the golden rule.... Seriously...I can't believe this shit still goes on and in mny ways is much worse thn 30 years ago.... Reminds me of the Michigan preacher recently..very conservative..very "family man"...very outspoken against the LGBT community....has a wife and 3-4 kids...pretty young...etc.. Turns out he gets busted for photos appearing online of him making out with other dudes....many of them... In other words...he doth protest too much... And it ALWAYS seems to be that way...the most outspoken are the ones who wind up being self loathing versions of what they supposedly are against... In this Michigan guys case it boggles the mind why he would marry and procreate knowing all along it was a big lie....unreal EDIT...my bad..he has FIVE kids...apparently also almost drove a gay teen to suicide.....again...unreal
  18. Hey took a shot of Geddy and a shot of Alex and a crowd shot from what it looked like on the video.....I bet those show up in his next blog....
  19. I think its ok to feel bummed if you think Rush is done with big tours.... I think its a completley unsupported to believe they are retired.... They have never said it...nor implied it.
  20. Weird that I've read about the hemispheres tour featuring video of the brain splitting into hemispheres etc...but never have seen a video nor photo documentation anywhere....even les claypool mentions remembering it....
  21. Main monkey Biz.....much more impressive live...especially 5 rows back...its a working machine... When I first heard it on snakes though it felt like a Disney tune from the Lion King...just not as strong.. Live...a different story altogether...really stood out as a cool instrumental...
  22. "Caulkwork Angles"...rebuilding Megadon after a battle between hearts and minds... Not to be confused with a cinemax late night "adult" film of the same (but spelled differently) title...
  23. Not sure why people think ClockWork Angels tour was too choppy visually....I thought it was a pretty nice balance... Now....a Show of Hands...? Completely different story there...even parts of the Grace Under Pressure tour got frantic....
  24. No preconcieved ideas like 2 songs from this era 2 songs from that...one of the cool things with Rush as always been the end result of each record has been an honest representation of where they were at each point.....whether you like it over time or not....its real....all except Feedback anyway....
