  1. You can't share a case of beer over the phone folks.....it was a beer party.
  2. The thing I've never liked about Portnoy is he never sounds like Portnoy....I never hear him play and say "Hey that's Mike Portnoy"..... instead I hear "thts a Peart lick..thats a Bozzio lick...that's a Bissonette lick".... When I hear any of those three ...they sound immediately like themselves...Bozzio in particular....and I can say the same for a host of other players... Mike never stood out with a voice and DT as a whole is derivative...fun...but derivitive.... Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilsons material sounds like themselves....Harrison and Minneman both sound like themselves....
  3. But if forced....the spirit of radio....really hard to beat....
  4. Can't pick one but agree with all stated already....one that's has a great intro and finish is chain lightning....another is digital man.....another yet...the weapon...and ( don't care if Rush abandoned it)... Countdown....all feature both to me....
  5. No doubt !!!!!!!!!!!! http://s26.postimg.org/tku81la7t/Neil_hairyback_01.jpg This might be the worst thing I've ever seen...no wonder he can't petend strangers are long awaited friends...
  6. If? It already exists...2113...by that kevin dude....
  7. Shoes....they've always had cool shoes in every era.
  8. The edge of this...the edge of that...the razors edge...edge....that and the Gadd fill which only works in certain musical situations...sometimes (most?) When Neil plays it it sounds out of place and throws the flow.....its basically the "bucket of fish" fill...and Bonham and Appice played it years ago..... Having said that Rush play better now than back when....more relaxed and confident as players....Lee in particular on R40 was pretty amazing....Neils about 100% better too....this is why they will do more studio Rush even if they never tour again...which I don't think they will.
  9. Sheesh....I really started something....hey don't get me wrong from 75-78 Kiss was my band but by 79.... I felt a bit robbed...they went from dangerous to disco....I couldn't accept it.... Which is funny because I was just listening to Bowies Station to Station...plenty of disco there but in his case it worked....:) I think 78 was my year of Kiss decline...saw em live in January was on cloud 9.... by October the cracks started to show...I remember feeling embarassed over the Phantom movie... I drew Kiss pictures contantly in those days!
  10. Grew up a Kiss fan...coverted to Rush around 79... here's the thing...battles have ensued between fanbases...who is better?... whose fans are better..?... etc...well.... Its 1979 ....again...going into 1980.... Kiss does Dynasty...without basically 2 founding members for crissake...Criss never plays a note......Rush drops Permanent Waves...heralding an entirely new era....no comparison....the "opener" kills the headliner.....Rush...much greater than Kiss.... Drops mic......
  11. I remember my first beer...
  12. I never understood the hate for BU2B2 either.....its a segue...interlude...a freaking monologue....that's it....who in their right mind is comparing it to other full songs anyway?.... I just can't understand the bizarre criteria some use to "judge" music like its an olympic scoring table.....
  13. Liked it a lot....got over the whole "its gotta be only those three guys damnit" phase a long time ago.....for every tour ? No. But it certainly made sense with CA as something like oh 9 of 11 songs had string arangements written and credited as such (can't remember his name now)..... edit- David Campbell who I think worked with Porcupine Tree as well...and those musicans aren't so nameless necesarily outside of general rock circles....in some ways playing with classical players has to make you up your game a bit. I see it as collaboration and enhancement....Dreamline was amazing with those real string runs...CA sounded great as well.....and Rush did it better than some bands where it was entirely 100% cheese factory.....
  14. People complaining about this jam need their heads examined. A superb effort. It's about as cool as it can get in my book. Agreed ...and too many fanbois who either don't play or have very limited musical experience ( playing in garage "I'm gonna nail it man") seem to have this bizarre idea that reading sheet music equals subpar musicianship....? Its the most misguided ignorant notion ever.....
  15. Great job by Simmons...my first rock hero guy as a kid. He's got a big heart. Then I began playing drums....
  16. I wonder, if asked, what he'd say about Keith Moon today? I don't think there's any doubt he still loves Moon...his set up on R30 &R40 was designed as a Moon tribute...and ElDarko has a trigger pad with the Who bullseye pattern....he still remembers his influences...
  17. Love it....saw people complaining on facebook the drummer has sheet music ( like that's a bad thing?)....heeerfrfff durf....this isn't three dudes playing cover in a garageband trying to duplicate the original ( and probably botching it anyway BTW ).... this is a different arrangement similar to a big band situation...reading charts isn't a bad thing....its what pros do all the time. The performance is great....guitarist was great as well.
  18. I've been listening to the CDs and they are great as well....Botrill really got it right...power and clarity....which in turn makes you appreciate the actual playing....I knew he was the right guy after working with crimson etc....
  19. Since they only profit from tours and not albums, what's the point of just doing an album that doesn't make money? Oh yeah, creative expression...well that doesn't go far these days. Then if they make the album it will be non stop hounding about touring. R40 was a nice clean break and I'm fine with that. Completely disagree...as an artist the most difficult time to continue creatingg is when you have no success no money no security and the easier thing like a different careeer altogether is there to be a safety net....these guys can do whatever they want creatively at this point....and artists continue without using excuses about filesharing or lack of cd sales....look at Bowie worked...album...off broadway play...videos.... right up till the end...the real end...and hated touring btw....so he did quit that part..... One reason people stop everything is burnout....not sure if NP feels that is a problem...but apparently the other two don't feel that way?
  20. Yeah Neil smoked a turd sandwich (however that's done?) on this one.....heck I'd like to hear his Spanish after 3 months let alone Japanese....
  21. And for me a fan since 1980...who has seen every tour live since Signals...some multiple times....I have to say R40 live is my favorite live DVD....it hit me after watching it a few times....anyone can argue over vocals or setlist shit...overall its an amazing DVD....it captures the excitement and senimentality ....the sound quality is great...the playing is f***ing great ( I've heard the old boots from the 70s etc....they made just as many mistakes then....sorry but they did....or changed stuff if you prefer)...playing at this level this good from the original members is pretty goddamn unheard of.....and if you can't appreciate the setlist in full and what they did with this show then you are kinda missing out I think....
  22. Cool on the Nugent thing;)...... Yeah I just feel NP struggles to be in the moment sometimes....years of being orchestrated can be tough to overcome. He would probably acknowledge that about himself.
  23. Counterparts was great....in parts....Cold Fire not one of their best....Double Agent was cool...Animate instant classic....Leave that thing alone crushes MalNar.....Stick it out is better than many give credit for....Alien Shore grooves without trying too hard.....
  24. Scintillating analysis. Ok analysis then....the song sounds like a decent enough bass riff with a decent enough drum groove...that's section A for "analysis"...then here comes the guitar sec B( which sounds mailed in)....a power chord...yawn....rise repeat....then some instumental breaks...sec C ....bass breaks...solid...drum breaks...not really working....a drummer not fully counting or figuring out where "1" is....striving for something they can't quite nail..while ignoring something that would fit..if you're going to take an extra count in a measure...make it count and be clear that a fill is going outside of the tunes regular time signature....that's what I'm saying. The breaks in YYZ worked....MalNar just does not. Had a great drum instructor who told me one time if pressed for time and you can't dazzle with brillance then baffle with bullshit....those fills feel a lot like the latter.... TMMB and Speed of Love are both better songs than MalNar..... BTW....Ted Nugent is a hack.
  25. malnar......it never worked for me ...easily their worst instrumental..... I can't stand Neils drumbreaks even....they sound really really out to lunch.....
