  1. Vapor Trails...someone seriously voted for that???
  2. Power Windows was the pinnacle of the keyboard era in my opinion. A great example of the keyboard, guitars and drums in perfect harmony. Slightly off topic, but Tull's "Broadsword and the Beast" has the same "perfect blend" feel to me.
  3. I've always wondered why a player would tune in that way (I know that Eddie VH would typically tune his guitar a half step down so that he could do more bendy stuff, but why would Alex on just this one particular song tune a step up). Is it just that they couldn't get the right feel on the song otherwise? I'd love to know the thinking that went into it. My guess is that he wanted to use certain chord shapes and/or open strings and those would only work if the guitar was tuned up a step. Isn't it kind of weird that it happened only on this one song??? I guess the world may never know. The funny thing is that they probably don't remember why they did it either.
  4. I would absolutely love "Time and Motion" if there we no keyboards at all in it. Just the little bit that's there really hurts the song in my opinion. I don't care for the vocal harmony either...to me, it comes across like a singing track on top of a spoken word track. They used that harmonizing technique way too often in the later years.
  5. It would sound cool, but maybe less cruncherific, with a slide. I wonder if maybe he tried it with a slide originally and it came across too much like a ZZ Top song :)

  7. Thanks for the info...it looks like headlong flight may use some kind of slide tuning. I wonder why he didn't use a slide for it.
  8. Does anyone know on which songs, in Rush's studio repertoire, that Alex does not use the standard EADGBE guitar tuning? Also, are there any studio songs on which he used a capo?
  9. I bought my first VHS recorder specifically to tape the Blue Oyster Cult appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. We didn't have cable back then and had to rely on the antennae being turned the right way and I don't believe I ended up being able to pull in the channel at the right time to record it, so all was for naught. Luckily whatever channel it was (I believe I watched it on something called the Blue Jean network) used you replay it pretty often. I remember they played the BOC, Billy Squier and Foghat appearances several times.
  10. Of the post-Moving Pictures era, does anyone think that Presto got the least love by the band in live performance? It seems like any love-affair that the band had for the songs diminished pretty quickly.
  11. I think someone had a "any publicity is good publicity" moment that back-fired big time.
  12. I think the Presto is on its own little island stylistically for the band. It didn't really come across as a natural progression between HYF and RTB. It has definitely grown on me over the years. For the longest time, I thought it was just "blah". When I heard they were playing "Presto" on the Time Machine tour, I knew I had to go. I was always disappointed that they didn't play that song on the original Presto tour (and I would love to know why they didn't).
  13. For years I thought that pineapple on a pizza was silly. Then someone ordered a Hawaiian pizza at a business meeting I was attending and I tried it. My life was changed forever.
  14. The song reminds me a little bit of The Mars Volta.
  15. Geddy Chris Squire Mike Rutherford John Glascock Roger Waters
  16. The strangest music I've ever heard is Bo Hansson - Music inspired by Lord of the Rings.
  17. The two of my kids that are into Rush are 22 and 17 (my 16 year old doesn't get them even a little bit). They were exposed to Rush simply because I listen to them a lot and over time they came to like many of the shorter "classic" Rush songs. They are certainly not fanatics like I and still don't understand the appeal of Rush's "epic" longer songs. I took both of them with me to see the R40 tour and the songs they looked forward to were pretty typical of casual Rush fans (Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart, Roll the Bones). Needless to say, there weren't disappointed in the show. The one song in the show that stood out for my oldest was Distant Early Warning. He thought they performed that really well. I wonder sometimes what it would have been like to be exposed to 30+ years worth of Rush all at the same time the way my kids were. Every album, song and style that the band had gone through on an even keel. Would my favorites be different?
  18. If Geddy can't even remember what songs they've played live, he'd have no idea what songs may have been recorded and lie in the vaults (that would probably go for the other two of them also). I would think that whoever owns the rights to their music would certainly have checked the vaults to see what was there and if it was salvageable. I also can't imagine that, if there was something worthwhile, the band would refuse to release it.
  19. All I know is, my wife bought me a book years ago on the 50 greatest "guitarists" of all time and Jaco was listed. I saw his name and thought "who the hell is that?". I read his story a bit and was intrigued enough about his ultimate demise to watch his documentary on Netflix. He does do some pretty impressive playing in that film but, as EagleMoon pointed out earlier, he just didn't play a genre of music that I find interesting.
  20. It think it was more a poor Eagles offensive line than a good Bucs defensive line. Another part of the Eagles that Chip Kelly let go to shit. It will take years to build back up again.
  21. revised to reflect recent top ten lists Nothing yet for Ring Out Solstice Bells, their rather nifty Xmas song. I think its a good track and without it SFTW would have been poorer for it! By the way Happy Birthday today to Ian Anderson whose sixty-nine years old! He's ready for the rocking chair! He's still touring occasionally, unfortunately his voice retired 15 years ago.
  22. My top ten Tull Living in the Past Crazed Institution Baker St. Muse Songs from the Wood Velvet Green Reasons for Waiting Life is a Long Song Thick as a Brick Skating Away Dun Ringill
  23. That's cool...I've been living under a rock for way too long.
  24. Luckily, Rush didn't continue down the path of long and pointless which is what "Fountain" is. It's got some interesting bits, but comes across as cutting room floor stuff pasted together.
  25. Dude. They have! To wit: http://i.imgur.com/iTkV2hZ.jpg I missed that...Was that just a one show thing?
