treeduck
Tom had a good run in the 80's with Platoon, Someone to Watch Over Me and Shoot to Kill and a few more films going into the 90's that have been mostly forgotten, and he all but disappeared after that. So Liotta has the better career I think although he didn't get an Oscar he's had the greater number of major roles. And when it comes down to a random film starring Liotta against a film starring Berenger I'd most often go for the Liotta film.

blueschica
Tough one. It shouldn't be this hard, Ray Liotta was awesome for all time in Goodfellas and that's why I picked him. Tom Berenger has been really good in some things, though; he was very good as General Longstreet in the Gettysburg movie, and he was kind of typecast in Major League but did well in the role! Ray Liotta was also so good in this tiny movie probably no one but my daughter and I ever saw. She used to be obsessed with it, the way 5 year olds get. It was called Corinna, Corinna and he was the widowed dad of a little 5 yr old girl who quits talking. He hires Whoopi Goldberg as his housekeeper and they begin to fall in love; it's really very touching and he is excellent in what is such a different role for him.

I just think of Ray as shadier than Tom and Nick Fury is better when he's like that + some gruffness.

Also check out a flick he did with Tm Hulce and Jamie Lee Curtis, Dominick and Eugene. Powerful.
Digital Dad
Liotta purely on the strength of Goodfellas.
Blue J
Liotta purely on the strength of Goodfellas. Yes! Ray all day long...but I'm biased. He's one of my favorites (and Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies of all time). He was also really, really good in Copland.

I just saw it a month or so ago. Had never heard of it before that. Raw and gritty in every positive sense of the words. Check it out if you haven't already.

Rutlefan
Like them both. Went with Ray despite never being into mob movies as he can be pretty funny, though I liked Berenger in Major League.
