Does looking at an album cover give you a good or bad first impression of an album?

Just as the title asks, do album covers give you a good or bad first impression of an album.

Unfortunately it does for me, and for some reason it is really bad.

A perfect example is The Eagle- The long run

The album itself is great, but when I looked at the cover at first, it made me not listen to it at all, I'm not sure why the visual look of an album can turn me away from it before I pay attention to the most important part, THE MUSIC

This really didn't make me want to listen to the album

I did and I'll say the album is better than the cover, which isn't saying too much

It can do either but if a bad album has a great cover it's still a bad album and if a good album has a bad cover that cover tends to look better and better over time because of what it represents. That or it just is what it is and you look at it differently or see it differently or you get used to it. Edited by treeduck

I used to go and by albums from bands that I didn't know just by the appeal of the cover.

Strawbs - Hero and Heroine

Nektar - Remember The Future

...to name a few.

I do the same thing, if im looking for new music, the first thing I look for is a cool album cover, then the music

You're better off listening to it to see if you think it's any good.

It was tough finding 'new' music back in the early 70's. The radio stations played the commercially successful bands and the magazines such as Creem and Circus pretty much covered the same.

Yeah, I picked a lot of bad music but I did find a few gems.

Three of my favourite bands have pretty boring covers:

Nightwish

Rush

Toto

Seriously...rarely have they released an album with a cover that gets me excited.

Yes, I judge a book by its cover.

The priority of how I determine whether I'm interested in giving an album a go:

Sample song / single > Genre, band bio > Album cover

The only time going off of album cover + genre has failed me miserably is with this album:

I can remember buying a lot of music because of the album cover back in the day. A specific one was the queensryche ep

This^^^. Way back in the day I bought quite a few albums based on the cover only. It was the "lack of information age"... Edited by Narps

Bands (especially new ones) were careful to make sure you could tell about the genre by the album cover. No way you would think a new wave album was metal and vice versa. Iron maiden did a nice job of this. There was no mistaking what was inside.
