Are we supposed to give a commentary? Anyone that was around when this album came out would know how out of left-field it hit us. It's the only album I ever owned that I went through multiple copies - that's how much I played it in 1969/1970. Even though it was released in late 1967 (December I think), we didn't hear it on the radio until mid-1969 when Tuesday Afternoon began to get airplay.

I found a nice copy of this on vinyl about two years ago, in amazing condition. Its glorious.

91 picks until we hit the obvious.

 

I think people are trying to think of everything but the obvious.

 

I also think many of us here are not currently in a massive Rush mood.

 

Yes and Kansas come to mind as great prog before Rush do right now. I know many on here feel the same right now.

 

Well I was just thinking since its' a RUSH forum, and not a Kansas or Yes forum that would make it the obvious. Not so much that people aren't thinking of them, just that they're trying to think of something NOT as obvious.

101) Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy - Return To Forever ( Lucas )

 

This is my favorite Return To Forever album, and is definitely the one that fits best into the rock and prog category ... It is looser and much less polished than the later albums that featured Al Di Meola ( I love Al, but things changed when he joined )

 

Lenny White is one of a handful of drummers that can keep me interested with drumming alone, and Lenny and Stanley Clarke on this are killer - more rock, more loose .. Guitarist Bill Connors is great - more fuzzed out and rock than Al ... And Chick Corea is awesome

 

I feel this definitely fits into the prog category

This is my favorite Return To Forever album, and is definitely the one that fits best into the rock and prog category ... It is looser and much less polished than the later albums that featured Al Di Meola ( I love Al, but things changed when he joined )

 

Lenny White is one of a handful of drummers that can keep me interested with drumming alone, and Lenny and Stanley Clarke on this are killer - more rock, more loose .. Guitarist Bill Connors is great - more fuzzed out and rock than Al ... And Chick Corea is awesome

 

I feel this definitely fits into the prog category

 

Yeah but I don't know how you can put that but not put Miles Davis Bitches Brew or Live Evil.

While perhaps many think of Björk primarily as a trip-hop or electronic artist, I've frequently seen her touted as crossover prog, and she's rather progressive and inventive in general. Vulnicura is strongly thematic, featuring extended song lengths, adventurous composition, and experimental sounds. While it certainly doesn't spring to mind as a "typical" prog album, I think the case can be made for the inclusion of such accomplished work in the name of some more contemporary variety :madra:

I 'discovered' this band via a recommendation on the Marillion forum. Night is their fourth release, and it's one of those albums that sneaks up on you, slowly works its way into your soul, and sets up for the duration. Ethereal, beautiful, haunting and utterly magical.

The title is Rush Forums's Top...you don't have to address every Rush album as they should already be obvious favourites. But outside of Rush we all have very different musical interests and threads like this provide a perfect opportunity to share.

I almost added Gazpacho's Demon at 104. I adore this band, who don't seem to get much love on this forum. I discovered them a couple of years ago via a free Kscope sample disk sent with an order from Burning Shed.

I 'discovered' this band via a recommendation on the Marillion forum. Night is their fourth release, and it's one of those albums that sneaks up on you, slowly works its way into your soul, and sets up for the duration. Ethereal, beautiful, haunting and utterly magical.

 

I almost added Gazpacho's Demon at 104. I adore this band, who don't seem to get much love on this forum. I discovered them a couple of years ago via a free Kscope sample disk sent with an order from Burning Shed.

 

They've done some great stuff. Tick Tock is also fantastic, and they're brilliant live, too :ebert:
