i don't know if i agree with the little melody critique of Octavarium. it's on now. melody all over to my ears.

Where? :)

Lol. I wonder that a lot with DT.

:fistbump:

Ha. But thats not to say I dont find it. I often do. Its often there. DTs music is not about the hook. They do tend to meander with their structures which makes the melody a bit difficult to place. The first 4 or so albums have a ton of melody all the way up to Metropolis and since then they do tend to be more explorative.

yea the wanking kinda took off at six Degrees. A lot of that was due to acquiring Jordan. i don't mind it. but if it's not your thing you will hate DT, lol

Mind

I think this is where we disagree on DT, I love Ruddess way Moore ;)

just a wank fest as far as I'm concerned. Too much fiddling and not enough melody.

You say that like it's a bad thing... :)

It is as far as I'm concerned. :)

OK done. My honest opinion:

Octavarium is great, as far as modern prog metal goes.

But Xanadu is a song for the ages.

Replaying Octavarium was wonderful. No complaints. But in this case, Xanadu is just a far more iconic, and beautiful, work of art.

Now, The Count Of Tuscany in the other hand...

Xanadu - three distinct, genuine personalities who were in the midst of creating one of the most unique, timeless albums ever, and Xanadu is a highlight

Octavarium - the end result of a bunch of music school clones making a conscious effort to be "prog" - do they even know each other's names ?? .. do they even have names ??

Advantage - RUSH

It's far and away my favourite song the band has ever written! The whole album, to be honest, took me by surprise is the best way possible!

Dream Theater sucks

I think they're very good musicians but their songs are very forgettable.

I quite remember every song I've heard, I hear melody all over Octavarium. That's just me though.

As I Am is pretty melodic. Take the Time. Forsaken. Pull Me Under of course. Hollow Years. The Lie...

There can be some melody found somewhere among all that wanking. :guitar:
