From a poster on cockytalk, who answered my question, "Why not us?":

"Here is why not us:

SEC schools' annual football recruiting expenses, 2008-13*

1. Tennessee, $1,297,109

2. Auburn, $950,316

3. Alabama, $903,217

4. Arkansas, $652,459

5. Georgia, $626,139

6. Florida, $557,360

7. Mississippi, $438,486

8. LSU, $428,305

9. Missouri,** $424,944

10. Kentucky, $380,210

11. Mississippi State, $352,047

12. Texas A&M,** $287,111

13. South Carolina, $263,094

*Vanderbilt is exempt from disclosure because it is a private university.

**Missouri and Texas A&M did not join the SEC until 2012; spending reflects all five years."

When I read that, I get disgusted.

Not because SC is spending comparatively little in that department, but because all the schools are spending so much on what is just a game.

Anyway, if you study the chart, it is clear that spending gargantuan sums of money is not any guarantee of victory in the games. The biggest money waster of all in that list is Tennessee, which has pretty much sucked during that same time period.

Yeah, Tennessee even had prostitutes travelling with the recruiters.

Due to our small state population, and our lack of history, we probably need to be spending more on recruiting than anyone else, but....

.... I agree with your general premise. Football is tribalism run amuck and really when we say the schools are in an "arms race" it's a great metaphor. This type of tribalism is what causes world wars.

What makes me mad is how much the apparel companies make and don't have to pay the kids for wearing their products on ESPN, who, also, DOES NOT PAY THE KIDS. Someone posted on hear that ESPN gets 20% of satellite and cable fees.

I think USC was just named the top business school in the US, but you're not going to hear that mentioned at the football games this season.

Alabama has allowed 42+ pts in 3 of the past 6 games (beat Auburn, lost to Ohio State, lost to Ole Miss).

That happened TWICE in Saban's first 105 games at Alabama .

Can we STOP talking about how good Alabama's defense is??

They are losing at LEAST 3 games...

For the love all humanity, let that be the case.

Glad the Buckeyes made through the rugged MAC part of the schedule unscathed .. :eyeroll:

Now the tough part comes. Indiana (4-0) in B-town.

Congrats to Indiana, 4-0, and Duke, upsetting Jawja Tech.

Love it that TWO teams who wear orange absolutely blew their leads and lost their games:

Texas punter drops snap and Oklahoma State wins with FG.

Tennessee mismanages clock and gets penalty and kicker misses game winning FG against Florida.

Maybe the refs hate Bielema too.

TO be honest, MD got destroyed by Bowling Green so we're not talking about a good team there.
