toymaker
I've known lots of Chaupchuaduahs. Neighbors from way back. Seriously, though, does that handful of steel drum notes really add anything to the song? Edited April 19, 2015 by toymaker

toymaker
The Chaupchuaduahs are known for their 'Snipe' hunting talent Actually, I heard that the family invented the steel drums, centuries ago. The art was passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, Erwig was a bit of a rebel, and didn't learn the craft as well as other members in his family. When Rush approached his siblings, Gongaga and Nembliza, to play on the album and they refused, Erwig was asked as a last resort. Because he needed the money, he agreed to do the session. What he played was so bad, though, that Terry Brown could only use very small portions - just a couple of notes here and there. They just didn't have the heart to leave Erwig off the album after he had travelled all that way to Le Studio. This whole thing is documented in the unofficial Rush biography Super Conductors: The Furious Finger Fantasies of Rush by Annie Mateme. Edit: sorry, Narps. I'm talking about the elusive session musician who plays the steel drums on The Spirit of Radio. Edited April 19, 2015 by toymaker

Lucas
Not even sure what this is even about... Narps, this is in reference to the credits on "The Spirit Of Radio" - it says "Steel drums by Erwig Chuapchuaduah" Keep in mind, it also says "Inspiration and vocal coaching Daisy the Dog" Anyone want to venture a guess who Erwig was ?? Terry Brown ?? Alex ?? I think if Neil played the steel drums, his ego would have insisted that he receive credit ;)
toymaker
There is an entry for Erwig Chuapchuaduah in the Encyclopaedia Metallum. However, not much is said about this reclusive character. http://www.metal-archives.com/artists/Erwig_Chuapchuaduah/355833 Edited April 19, 2015 by toymaker

toymaker
... and then there is the issue regarding royalties Yes, and it's very disturbing that, given Rush's tendency to sample everything and reproduce all parts of a song so meticulously live, they did not create sample triggers for the steel drums. No wonder that song always leaves me feeling slightly disappointed when I hear it live!
