This is meant to be fun - not dissected and analyzed

I'm not calling you, merely the asses that responded.

Anyone who rates Yes as a 60s band is a moron. You didn't and aren't.

LED ZEPPELIN I and II were released in the 60's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rage: ( I got LZ II for XMAS '69 :codger: )

we know.

I still don't consider led zeppelin a 60s band, no more than I consider nirvana an 80s band even though nirvana put out their first album in 89

Spot on.

How f***ing stupid do you have to be to consider Led Zeppelin and Yes as 60s bands?

It's like when someone asks "Name your top five favourite bands" and 50% of the responders here exclaim that they can't be limited to 5. Dumber and dumberer.

How do you determine what decade a band is "from" for the purposes of this fun little exercise then? Are The Stones a 60s band, a 70s band, an 80s band and an 00s band (A Bigger Bang is phenomenal)? Is Aerosmith a 70s band and an 80s band (anything after Pump stinks)?

Totally agree. Yes is obviously an 80s band, because their best album by miles was released in that decade.

For 'me' it's when I first heard the band and bought their album(s).

I heard Led Zep in 1969 and bought both albums that year. True they gained popularity and continued to product fine music into the 70's but for Led Zep ( for me ) is a 60's band because that's when I got into the band/music. My friends were big Yardbirds fans too so Led Zeppelin when hand in hand.

Again, this thread is labeled 'your top 5'. When a troll start calling me names because I voice my own opinion/experience, I lose interest in even responding. I'm done with this thread.

Here goes. I'm sure I've forgotten some and at the risk of upsetting some, I've bent the rules a bit. For me, the golden era comprises bands who formed in the late 60's but (arguably) released their best work during the 70's, so I've combined the 60's and 70's allowing myself 10 in total. However hard I try I can't come up with 5 bands from the 80 or 90's. I've only included each band once even if they have produced work over a number of decades.

60's/70's

The Beatles

The Who

King Crimson

Pink Floyd

Genesis

Rush

Camel

Yes

Jethro Tull

Abba

80's

Marillion

The Police

Asia

Radiohead

90's

Porcupine Tree

Muse

Opeth

Anathema

2000's onwards

Steven Wilson

Riverside

Lunatic Soul

Haken

Mumford and Sons (yes indeed. Probably the only current, mainstream band I like)

For some reason yours is my favourite, I dislike Mumford And Sons, but that is all I disagree with (I prefer Fleet Foxes for modern folk myself...which reminds me, I forgot all about Fleet Foxes!).

Looking again I don't know how Led Zeppelin got missed off the list although I don't know who would come off to accommodate them. Honourable mentions also must go to Caravan, Alan Parsons Project, Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac and Supertramp.

You are not the first person to recommend that I listen to Fleet Foxes. I have given them a couple of goes, but although I feel I ought to like them, they just don't do it for me. Maybe I should give them another chance sometime.
