I have Point of Know Return and I love it. What would be the best album to get next?

The classic album box set.

Coz you need all the seventies releases.

The great Segue returns with mad musical recommendation skillz.

lolz, okay, so basically anything from the 70s would be a good next album. Good to know.

You also get the two disc Legacy Edition of Two For The Show, full bonus tracks for the first five albums, and it is the only place where you can purchase a remastered to perfection copy of Monolith.

Six AMAZING studio albums. A classic, expanded, live album, and three divisive AOR releases that some love, others hate.

This was my first choice, I wanted all of it so I got it! Beautiful box and JUST GET IT! Kansas and Bruce had the best full run of albums in the seventies.

Love this box set. Love this band. Just. Go. For. It. If you love Point Of Know Return, the four preceding, and the two after it (live album included) cannot fail to delight!

Man, expensive... How about I just go for the one that has Carry On Wayward Son on it next and see where it takes me (when I next have cash that is)?

Yeah I think I've seen those Classic Album Series boxes at Walmart for about 20 bucks, so maybe if I have 20 bucks sometime I'll snatch one from there.

Gave it some thought:

Studio album: Leftoverture

But also get Two For The Show 30th Anniversary Edition. As a live album, it works better than any greatest hits album ever could, and as it features songs from only the first five albums, it is an absolutely riveting listen. Hands down my favourite live album after Fleetwood Mac's The Dance. Gives you a taste of EVERYTHING! In fact, maybe make that your next purchase and work backwards from there, and then forwards to Monolith (but after that, tread carefully. I like the AOR albums from Audio Visions to Drastic Measures, but they are not at all pure Kansas).

Point of Know Return is great but for me it's pretty low on the classic Kansas totem pole. I much prefer Monolith by FAR.

Mick

Yeah I agree.

Monolith is great to my ears, but Point is a major classic.

Bear in mind my fandom is...a whole year long...

I think it's still a great album, but maybe it just got older quicker if that makes sense? It's probably the one I played the most back in the day.

Even if I overplay the album, Monolith could never compete.

For one thing, I actually desire to replay Point over and over. I visit Monolith every now and then when the mood sways me. I might tire of Point, but it wouldn't change the fact I prefer it for still valid reasons.

I play Vapor Trails more than any other Rush album now, but it will never be as great as AFTK or MP, even if I have currently burned out on those.

One thing to consider with my opinion is the fact that they played several of these songs to death on the radio back when the album was new and for quite a few years afterwards. I kind of got sick of hearing it. Listening to it now you don't have that going on and things would seem newer since you're not inundated with it constantly playing on the radio.

Exactly was I was just thinking!

I am fortunate that all my favourite bands never get played haha!

Watched some Bon Jovi videos today. Hated them.

If I was confronted with that over and over on MTV, I'd have missed out on one of my favourite bands.

Yeah exactly. Sometimes no matter how good the band is or a song is if it's played to death people get sick of it. That's what happened with Bohemian Rhapsody. They played that like every half an hour on the radio and considering how long the song is, that was a lot.

I never liked that song, even as a kid.

I remember ABBA played a lot when I was a kid (major ABBA revival in the 90's). Never tired of them haha!

But they were still never played as much on the radio. They were more of a sing-along band, like KC and the Sunshine Band. :)

Erm...not in the UK. They are major, major big here. 9 number one singles, several number one albums, Mamma Mia famously outgrossed The Dark Knight and a 23 year old best of album continues to sell and sell no matter how many times it is reissued.

They never truly cracked America, but in the UK they were bigger than Fleetwood Mac.

And ABBA were more than a singalong band. Play the title track to The Visitors or The Day Before You Came.

Sing along isn't necessarily a derogatory statement. They just weren't known for their musicianship, but more for their voices.

And the incredible melodies that few, if any, bands can rival.

The songwriting is incredible. No hyperbole here. I should hate Super Trouper out of principle, but I can't. It's brilliant. Unfairly so.

Unfairly so?

They were absolutely incredible, even the worst lyrics are saved by infectious melodies and gorgeous vocals, the same way many lyrically dreadful metal songs are saved by a phenomenal guitarist.

ABBA are deservedly one of the most loved bands of all time. Will always be a huge fan, always.

How many,

Original members are in the band now?

2.

I wouldn't pay to see them,

I saw them back in the 70's. Great show.

I agree. Same as Yes, until at least the original frontman returns, not interested.

As much as I enjoy Drastic Measures, nothing will ever match the quality of the albums Kansas to Two For The Show (and some days, Monolith).

I've never quite understood their appeal. They were always kind of a joke band when I was growing up, but I do like their songs when I hear them.

They were from a country where the only cross border success any artist seemed to make was in Germany.

They maintained a wholesome image, and sought to write the best pop melodies around, even if that meant ignoring trends around them.

I get why they were uncool, but with the sales they had I think many who professed to hate them probably secretly admired them (many have come forward to admit this themselves).

They still sound relevant. When it comes to modern pop, it takes months to age and fall by the wayside. ABBA still win over new fans across many genres.

Even if I don't like an artist, I can still understand their appeal.

Me too.

My two favourite albums are Voulez Vous and The Visitors. Never tire of them!

Really? Even something like thrash metal? ;)

How many,

Original members are in the band now?

2.

I wouldn't pay to see them,

I saw them back in the 70's. Great show.

I saw them a couple years ago and my local Indian Casino. The original members were Phil Ehart, Robbie Williams and Steve Walsh. Very good, but very short show...about an hour, 15mins. But for $30 tickets it was ok for me. By the looks of all the geriatrics in the crowd they had to have a short show because most of them were up past their 8:30 bedtime. I remarked to my wife "these old people do know it's Kansas and not Tony Bennett right"?

Thrash metal is full of amazing musicianship. The melodies on Master Of Puppets, for a famous example, are worthy of any classical composer. Reign In Blood has an impressive sense of mood and atmosphere, even though I can't stand it, it conjures the spirit the band set out to accomplish. Thrash metal gigs, from what I have heard, are at best a spectacular display of power.

Sorry, but I think we will agree to disagree on this one. :)

Why? A lot of it is not to my taste, but that doesn't change the fact the best of the genre is as skilled in technique and talent as any prog or classic rock artist.

Megadeth - Rust in Peace!!

Testament has proggy aspects to them as well. Death Angel is pure power with tons of melody and feel.

Exactly!

I have to say, it amazes me how many people completely disregard the musical worth of any one genre simply because it isn't to their taste. How anyone can say that thrash metal has no musical worth surprises me. It doesn't have to be to your taste, but that also doesn't make it bad.

I do not like any thrash metal bands/albums, but whenever I have sat down and listened to anything, I find much to appreciate. Same goes for death metal and hardcore.

That's what I'm disagreeing with.

Really? So the likes of James Hetfield or Dave Mustaine belong in the garbage can of famous artists?
