WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE ROLL THE BONES?

Why why why?????

This album is a real favourite of mine. The songs, the vocals, the lyrics, its odd quirks. It stupid rap. Oh yeah. ..Segue loves this...

So come on, we have a thread on Test For Echo, and yet everyone STILL DISSES THIS RECORD.

(Bear in mind that I am a Toto fan so my opinions may lack credibility.)

For me, only nine albums better this. And no. Caress Of Steel is not one of them.

I like Roll The Bones. There was a time that I didn't really care for the rap in the title song but with time I have grown past that and really enjoy it now. Face Up is really the only song that I don't care for on the album. It's not horrible but I just don't care for it.

I don't hate it. I like the rap part.

I think at the time the album was released it was almost considered sacrilegious. Rush was kind of the anti-rap group. The polar opposite of what rap was and I think that's why it was not accepted very well. It was almost like they were lowering themselves to that level. It was beneath them.

Oh I see. There was something going around with them saying they wanted John Cleese to do the rap part.

:laughing guy: The only way I could love Roll the Bones more would be if they had got John Cleese to do it! That would have been so funny, I seem to remember they said he was busy or something, so they used Geddy's voice. I love that track, love the album too. This is my daughter's favourite Rush album as well, which makes it more special to me. :)

It's because the songs were on the radio all the time and it really brought the band into the public after a long slide into relative obscurity. Rush fans liked the idea of being part of a cult band type atmosphere, and they were pissed that everyone could get into Dreamline and Ghost of a Chance and that these new poseurs didn't know the real Rush.

I am amazed that this thread is so pro-RTB. This is such a beautiful album, and Bluefunk, you're daughter has exquisite taste!

Yeah, when you said TOTO FAN that drastically changed my opinion of you, and not in a good way. :laughing guy:

I think we all remember where we were when we first heard the rap part, as well as how we reacted. I think I was yelling long after the track was over. "Dreamline" is great, though. Edited by ThatLightInYourEyes

Thanks, she likes Dreamline the best of all. :)

As the man said, exquisite taste, and I can see she's a chip off the ole' block too! ;)

I certainly don't hate Roll the Bones. In fact, I like nine of its ten songs—to varying extents. But I don't consider any of those songs great, and that's a problem when I'm comparing it to Rush's other albums, all of which have at least one tune I love. Even Power Windows, which was in my doghouse for ages, has three tracks that I consider fantastic. And there are live versions of some of the RtB tunes that absolutely massacre the weak studio renditions. If I want to hear Dreamline, I'm going with the Different Stages or CA Tour performances. If I want to hear Ghost of a Chance, Retrospective 3 is getting a spin. There's little reason to subject myself to the wimpy studio versions.

SM, BTW.... My comment about Roll The Bones on the other thread meant no harm. I simply said I prefer Pornography to Roll The Bones... I can't help the fact that I'm a Cure fan.... :sarcastic:

Ooohhh...lol I got the impression this was a really hated album having come across many posts bashing this...and I could not picture you being a Cure fan. I am well impressed! Still need to get me some Yes however...

And as for the person who dismisses my taste as a Toto fan...lets just say I am content. They were more than three hit singles. Just play Falling In Between, Tambu and the very heavy (for the genre) Kingdom Of Desire. For me, Toto and Rush are almost equals, when Toto are at their peak. Fahrenheit is one of my all time favourite albums, as is Tambu and Isolation. Nothing wrong with brilliantly played, anthemically written and uplifting cheese rock. They do it better than anybody else.

Sorry if I am agitated, I am cooking for friends who I see tomorrow and its gonna be way past midnight when I am done. I am not sure if I am coming across nicely or aggressively! I take few shortcuts when it comes to cooking.

Hey, I'm not ashamed to say I owned Toto IV back in the day.

Lol that album is pure cheese...I am proud to say I love it! Maybe not quite like my love for AFTK but still...shame most people think thats the best Toto album. Its average at best by their own standards. Tambu is a very beautiful and bombastic pop rock album, and Kingdom Of Desire verges on heavy metal. My favourite, Fahrenheit, is embarrassingly '80's pop, but I think its one of my top ten albums. In the early 90's, Toto bettered Rush. Not for long though.

Opinions are like buttcracks. We all have one.
