Praise Of The Praiseworthy

I'm glad to hear you're not upset, because I think Neil was speaking to that situation, and nothing more. How would Neil know whether you, Tony R, are praiseworthy, if he doesn't know you? I wouldn't overanalyse it. :)

Asking TonyR not to overanalyse something is like asking the RRHOF not to induct unworthy non-rock Bands.

:poke:

The usual suspects speaking up for Peart. I make a point of never speaking up for people who don't like me.

Tony's op was right on the money. If You are Famous , Neil has the time of day for you, if Not...........

It seems to me that praise from one's peers should be far more satisfying than praise from anyone else.

Does anyone know of any profession that values public approval over peer approval? Politicians don't count.....

If Neil and/or any other members of Rush, or anyone else in Rock n' Roll, or in athletics, or, in any endeavor in life, inspire you, does anything else about them matter? I tried to warn my wife about this very thing, because she loves country music; lo and behold, while Bush was POTUS, several of the country music artists turn out to be Democrats, or say something bad about Bush, and she wanted to disown them. The fact of the matter is, very few people would know these guys outside of the limelight, so if they inspired you by perfecting their trade, then their personal life shouldn't matter.

I know NP's personal life is interesting, and I know he blog's about it on his website, but you gotta let things slide and have a little empathy, I guess.

I love country music myself! Can you love country and RUSH ?

yes you can sister! I enjoy Hank Jr and Lyle Lovett...and love Rush!

I love Lyle Lovett's music!

Not necessarily, when someone is in the spotlight you get a sense of what that person might be like and you might be intrigued to meet them or on the flip side you may have no desire to meet them at all. When someone walks up to you out of the blue you have no idea who they are.

Exactly. It's like if you are a world class chef. Sure, it is great when customers tell you how great your cooking is, but when a fellow chef, a peer, tells you that, it means more. It just does. How anyone could take this as offensive is beyond me, but this is the internet and I get that some just love to be outraged about something, anything.

Seriously, why does it matter if Neil would rather hang out with or appreciate the respect of a famous musician over anyone else or if he prefers broccoli to asparagus or whatever? What does that have to do with how great a drummer and songwriter he is? Maybe people are a little too involved in his personal feelings, thoughts and actions. I like him for his involvement with Rush - the rest is his life. IMHO...

I guess we're peas in the same pod. Lyle's music is reminiscent of Paul Simon in a strange way. Get his double album "Step inside this house" right away my friend...you will love it!

quite typical how this played out, There are def people who will invent any way to bash the guy. I find it hard to miss the idea of what he said. He was just saying that its if nice to get the respect of peer musicians he admires and respects. but somehow that turns into, he hates when regular people praise him, only when big star musicians like him.

yeah Im sure he waited all his life for musicians who are almost half is age to like him.

I think some of you are missing Tony's point. What he's saying is that it's all right for NP to admire others and want to approach and talk to them (and vice-versa), but if you're a fan that it makes you some kind of demented stalker. The point being there is no difference in the 2 positions. Other than running the risk of being pumped full of lead from Mosbach's glock. :P

You are missing the point. You'd have to be mad to not like being praised by other people who are skilled in your speciality, but the point is that Peart goes to great pains to say that he gets creeped out if fans praise him for his drumming. Basically Peart is quite happy to approach his heroes unsolicited or if he recognises you as a musician, artist or author he is ok with your praise but the rest of us are odd, stalker-like needy people who need to be kept at arms length.

Seriously, some of you here are like battered wives.

I didn't miss the point at all. In his speech at the ceremony, in no way whatsoever did he disrespect any Rush fans. IMO, you missed Neil's point completely.

Did it occur to you that they may have decided that Geddy was going to thank all the fans? That Neil would say something about their peers, Geddy would say something about their fans, and Alex would do something funny? It's quite possible, yes?

I do know that you are exaggerrating what Neil Peart has said about fans. If he gets "creeped out" by anything, it's by fans who go to great pains to worship him like a god. I totally support Neil's aversion for obnoxious fans who worship the ground he walks on. I also support his aversion for dikk fans who go to great pains to misinterpret and critique everything he does.

That's a pretty low way of trying to dismiss an argument. PM may have had a brain fart in that other thread (As we all sometimes do.) but he is far from being a "half wit".
