Uplifting and Intense Spiritual/Religious Films

Three of my VERY favorites from this genre:

1. Wings of Desire - winner of the Cannes Film Festival in 1985, and badly remade as City of Angels (well, not awful, but nowhere near the original IMHO). About angels on the earth in Berlin - some of it is in black and white, some is in color - most of it is in German, but some is in French and some in English, and an unusual appearance by Peter Falk whose entire performance is in English - long, slow moving, but deep, intense, meaningful and very powerful - i have to psych myself up every time i see this movie as it's such an intense experience, but truly one of the most powerful films I have ever seen.

2. Brother Sun, Sister Moon - 1972 film directed by Italian directo Zefferelli, but in English. This one is about the life of St. Francis of Assisi with great music by Donovan. A tale of living life simply, honorably and peacefully - extremely well done and a real beautiful movie...

3. The Last Temptation of Christ - an unusual film from Martin Scorsese with Willem Dafoe as Jesus - a VERY controversial movie when it came out, and one that hardcore born agains might have a hard time with, which is too bad, because if they took the offensive scenes symbolically and were able to accept that this is an interpretation, they might find it illuminating. This is a non-dogmatic protrayl of Jesus's last 3 years ending with a crucifiction and startling dream sequence/temptation by the devil, ending in salvation that is really stunning - if your'e a fan of Scorsese, you won't be disappointed by his artful direction and pacing - reallly another uplifting one for me.

What was the name of the Robin Williams movie where his wife commited suicide and he goes to Hell to get her out of there? "When dreams may come" or something like that.

I found "What Dreams May Come" to be a gorgeous movie, and really spectacular and inventive in the way it portrayed heaven and hell.

Ye, same here. I kind of liked the idea that each person had a different heaven and/or hell.

Man! I had forgotten all about this movie. He goes into an alternate awareness and he lives the paintings, or something. That was an asthetically cool as shit movie. Visually cool. 1022.gif

I know its corny, but I've got to say 'Its a Wonderful Life.'

That's not corny at all. 'It's A Wonderful Life' has to be one of the greatest movies ever made.

There's nothing like watching "It's a Wonderful Life"! Never, ever fails to move me, and renew my hope in the human spirit. smile.gif

"One man's life touches so many others, when he's not there it leaves an awfully big hole. "

And about "What Dreams May Come" - remember the scene where Chris (Robin Williams) touches the flower and it's actually paint? It squishes in his hand in a big blob of color...I love that scene. It demonstrates perfectly how art can affect life in a real, concrete way, IMO.

Jack, thanks so much for saying this. My way of trying to avoid that sort of thing was by saying "though the terms are subjective," meaning everyone will have a different meaning of the words spiritual and religious, and it wasn't my intention to impose my meaning as the right way and would hope others would take that as it being a very individual thing and therefore not to debate it. It wasn't my intention to have this get into religious debating, but of course with this kind of subject matter that's always a possibility, so thanks for clarifying just in case!

What Dreams May Come is a wonderful choice, and it happens to be my wife's favorite movie of all time - while I wouldn't take it that far, it's a beautiful movie and for me further evidence that Robin Williams should never do a comedy again - his dramatic skills are just too great to be wasted on things like Flubber.

Two more choices:

1. Gandhi - This guy is truly one of my heroes (his biography also being excellent), and what he did for his country just from leading by example, peaceful non-resistance, non-cooperation and non-violence is truly staggering. What other person in recent memory has done so much for a country without resulting to violence? Maybe Martin Luther King, Jr.? Regardless, there ain't many of them. Truly a amazing movie, and one I think everyone should see for an example of what one person can do and a glimpse into what is possible - oh yeah, and it won that Academy Award thingie too.

2. The Matrix - ok, perhaps an odd choice, but it really is kind of a modern day spiritual/warrior kind of movie. for me the most obvious thing, although this might not be the way everybody sees it, is how it's an allegory for life on this planet. in the movie the concept is that the life everyone is living is an illusion created by machines and in truth it's all a group dream that everyone participates in. could it be that this is the same for reality? not that we're plugged into machines and taken advantage of like in the movie, but that perhaps our TRUE reality is something far greater than life on earth as we know it, and that perhaps life is an illusion, that this world is transitory, a waking dream for us to learn and grow within before we wake up to our truer reality on the other side of it? just a thought...

Peace,

Gary

'It's a wonderfuil Life''s a great film isn't it...

My favourtie spiritual film, and my favourite film, is Baraka. It has neither dialogue nor characters. Instead, it consists of a sequence of footage shot around the world.

It starts with shot of nature, and then turns to showing how man is linked to and is a part of that nature by showing the behaviour patterns we have in common with nature, as well man's various devotional and death rituals.

Once you hare truly in your 'we are all one with nature' vibe it then shows man's destructive nature, before turning back to unity.

Now, I've only ever seen about 20 films so any recommendation I make comes with that caveat, but if you are looking for a spiritual film then I (strongly) urge you to check this. out.

This may be consider way out of the norm, but I found "Blade Runner", especially the last 10 minutes, to be very spiritual.

M Night Shyamalan's- SIGNS. Matter of fact you can find in different degrees the underlying theme (those lines sound familiar wink.gif of spirituality ,morality and faith confirmation in most of his films.

Well,I guess I'm going to have to say it.... Mel Gibson - "PASSION OF THE CHRIST" I know this could fit in the other threads that rushgoober started . BAD MOVIES GREAT REVIEWS,GREAT MOVIES BAD REVIEWS, WEIRD DARK MOVIES? Possible depending on your'e point of view of this controversial (to some) film. I just hope I didn't throw a holy hand gernade into this thread. Where do I stand with this movie? I put it here, to quote Forest Gump " That's all I got to say about that"

Field of Dreams is pretty spiritual to me, having to do with spiritual guidance, mysticism, life after death, healing past relationships, fulfilling dreams and desires, karma, etc...

One of my all time favorite movies - a true classic...
