Strangiato
For me, I would have to go with this from Losing it: Some are born to move the world -- To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Every time I hear those lines it leaves me feeling aberrant. DistantEarlyRushFan
Some will sell their dreams for small desires Or lose the race to rats Get caught in ticking traps And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight This one sometimes brings a tear to my eye. It is a reminder that people can't always realistically follow their dreams and that you have to sacrifice them sometimes to make a living. Peart is best at pointing out harsh realities of living IMO The metaphor tying the cubicle mentality to that of a bird caught in a cage is poignant Edited May 24, 2012 by DistantEarlyRushFan
Rush Cocky
The sun is turning black The world is turning gray All the stars fade from the night The oceans drain away AND Silence all the songbirds Stilled by the killing frost Forests burn to ashes Everything is lost I don't know if it's sad or depressing. It makes me want to jump off a bridge. Edited May 24, 2012 by Rush Cocky
CrossedSignals
QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ May 24 2012, 02:37 PM)The sun is turning black The world is turning gray All the stars fade from the night The oceans drain away AND Silence all the songbirds Stilled by the killing frost Forests burn to ashes Everything is lost I don't know if it's sad or depressing. It makes me want to jump off a bridge. I don't see those lyrics as depressing. They're about the circle of life, death and rebirth. Decay and renewal. Bittersweet, yes, but beautiful. A lot of the lyrics from Vapor Trails give me that same feeling.
CrossedSignals
In a dog's life A year is really more like seven And all too soon a canine Will be chasing cars in doggie heaven These lyrics make me sad.... sad for Neil that he has to live with knowing he wrote them. HowItIs
Time Stand Still, Nobody's Hero, Everyday Glory (the verses), Vapor Trail,... various bits of lyrics in other songs. Heck, sometimes 2112 gets me teary-eyed. Yeah, I know.
SchemingDemon
QUOTE (greyfriar @ May 24 2012, 03:39 PM) You can surrender without a prayer but never really pray, pray without surrender You can fight, fight without ever winning but never ever win, win without a fight This gets me every time. Also, In the city where nobody smiles And nobody dreams In the city where desperation Drives the bored to extremes Just one spark of decency Against a starless night One glow of hope and dignity A child can follow the light And Suddenly- You were gone From all the lives You left your mark upon I remember- How we talked and drank Into the misty dawn - I hear the voices We ran by the water On the wet summer lawn - I see the foot prints I remember- - I feel the way you would - I feel the way you would Tried to believe But you know it's no good This is something That just can't be understood I remember- The shouts of joy Skiing fast through the woods - I hear the echoes I learned your love for life I feel the way that you would - I feel your presence I remember- I feel the way you would This just can't be understood... 1 of the 7
OMG, ALL of Red Sector A. It's so sad that I can only listen to it once in a while. Songs that make me not necessarily sad, but misty-eyed: Bravado, plus the end of The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Xanadu, Hemispheres, The Body Electric, and the A Show of Hands version of Marathon. Teary-eyed in a good way: Rivendell, Madrigal, Closer To The Heart, and Second Nature. Others have already been mentioned. Yep, I'm a sap Deal with it Edited May 25, 2012 by 1 of the

Queen of Megadon
pretty much all of "Losing It"...the imagery and the implication tears at my heart each time I hear it. But one specific lyric that invariably puts a lump in my throat? "Christ, what have you done?"

Losing It, for sure, is a sad one. Love the tune, but just like 'Time Stand Still'...it references the realism of life being too short, and the reality of us losing what we once had.
