CrossedSignals
The '00s were a fertile time for new music, as new styles rose to prominence and the internet exercised new-found influence on music in general. Notably, the worlds of acoustic and electronic music began to collide in previously unseen ways. Because I was born in 1990, the '00s were an exciting decade simply because it was the first decade during which I was seriously paying attention to music.... especially new music! A slew of exciting new artists emerged in the '00s, and here are some of my favorites. Now that we've had some time to reflect on what's behind us, who are your favorite artists who released an album for the first time during the naughties (2000 through 2009)? Here's my (not-so-comprehensive) list (year of first full-length LP or EP in parentheses) -- (I've also added artists, in gray, who came a little too early or a little too late but I still feel are associated with the period): Air (1998) Death Cab For Cutie (1998) Feist (1999) My Morning Jacket (1999) Bonobo (2000) Caribou (2000) Coldplay (2000) Goldfrapp (2000) The New Pornographers (2000) Gorillaz (2001) M83 (2001) machinedrum (2001) Royksopp (2001) The Shins (2001) The Books (2002) Coheed and Cambria (2002) The Decemberists (2002) Ugress (2002) Arcade Fire (2004) Hot Chip (2004) Ratatat (2004) Bibio (2005) Flying Lotus (2006) Calvin Harris (2007) Gui Boratto (2007) Justice (2007) Zomby (2007) Bon Iver (2008) Fleet Foxes (2008) Friendly Fires (2008) Lady Gaga (2008) .... eat it, haters ;-) La Roux (2009) Neon Indian (2009) Passion Pit (2009) Washed Out (2009) Active Child (2010) Kuedo (2010) SBTRKT (2010) Sepalcure (2011) That's a pretty full list, although I'm sure I've forgotten tons of people.... And yes, I'm very biased toward indie rock, new wave, and electronic. Edited May 24, 2012 by CrossedSignals

You may as well toughen me up a little bit before the reeeal pissy folks come around. I think a few of my choices are going to get me some serious shit. But really, I'm just interested to see what other people like and hopefully discover some new music.
The K Man
To me, the best of the bands listed are The Decemberists, Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes. All three are terrific, and all are great live acts (seen 'em all). Same for Death Cab, who are all kinds of great. The best of those not listed: Transatlantic dredg OSI Blackfield Steven Wilson (as a solo artist)

EmotionDetector
I don't find myself too connected to any new artists these days. With that said, to me, the most consistently solid rock band from the 2000's is... 3 DOORS DOWN Great, great band...they know how to craft solid tunes, all of their albums are worth owning, and I believe Alex Lifeson actually helped them in the early years. He also performed on the song 'Dangerous Game', and helped with production on that album (Away From The Sun).

Rick N. Backer
I was just talking with someone about this. For the most part, I haven't bought too many albums by bands that started releasing material after, say, 1991. I suppose that's a function of my age. The few exceptions are: The White Stripes Wolfmother The Answer The Parlor Mob I don't include in this list bands like Audioslave, because Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden were popular in the early 90's. Balloon Astronomy is a pretty cool prog band with Nick D'Virgilio of Spock's Beard on drums. The album's only $5 on bandcamp. http://balloonastronomy.bandcamp.com/. Check out The Fierce and the Dead. They're Matt Steven's band and are all instrumental post-rockish/prog. Their stuff is name-your-price on bandcamp. http://thefierceandthedead.bandcamp.com/ Tedeschi Trucks Band is Derek Truck's and Susan Tedeschi's new supergroup. I love Edison's Children but Marillion is much better imo.
