invisible airwave
Speaking of The Cure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lDKQ708Z0s Right down to the 1st line, "It doesn't matter if we all die...". On a personal level for me, it's this U2 classic: I always skip it because it makes me cry hardcore tears every time I hear it. It hits too close to home for me. fledgehog
Freddie Mercury was literally dying when he recorded the vocals for this song -- too weak to stand up, but he sings with more power and passion than ever. That, IMO takes an already depressing song and makes it heartbreaking.

Steel Rat
"Angus Dei," from Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem." Nothing captures pitch-black despair better than complete rejection of anything that even slightly resembles the superficiality and orderly neatness of tonality. War Requiem is the most sobering piece I've ever heard, and I'm not even religious.
