trenken
QUOTE (Xanadoood @ Apr 6 2011, 02:10 PM) QUOTE (trenken @ Apr 5 2011, 09:28 AM) Seems like this isnt just based on ability. Everyone knows Geddy is a stronger player than McCartney, but he was the bassist in the freaking Beatles! I think that alone put him up there. They are legendary and far more influential than Rush could ever be, so I dont really have a problem with him being higher than Geddy, considering this clearly isnt solely based on skill. Flea is a maniac on bass. The dude can really play. People think he's just a slap master, but his finger work is extremely evolved as well. He does a lot of complex 3 finger plucking stuff that Geddy has never done. I would definitely say some of what he does is harder to pull off than anything Geddy ever has, but for Geddy to make that list is pretty huge. Outside of hardcore Rush fans noone seems to care about them, or even know they are still making music. Rush doesnt get the respect they deserve, so its a little something for Rolling Stone to recognize him. When you say " no one seems to care about them", who are you referring to? I was pointing out how Rush is a love it or hate it kind of band, there doesnt seem to be any in between with them like there is for a lot of other bands. I dont know anyone that listens to Rush casually like the would maybe Guns n Roses or something like that. I know people that love Rush, I know people that cant stand them, I dont know 1 person thats just kind of into them.
trenken
QUOTE (GTIMANiac @ Apr 7 2011, 02:20 PM) Claypool is better than Geddy, imo... Probably in terms of how much technical skill he has, he really is a monster on the bass and Geddy is actually a big fan of his, and Les of Geddy of course. In fact, some might remember this, but Les's chord work on the bass is what inspired Geddy to start using more chords, like in Force Ten and Animate. May not have happened without Les. Geddy talked about this in a few interviews many years ago. Anyway, its hard for me to look at a guy just thinking about 1 thing he does, I look at the whole package, and in that sense I think Geddy is beyond Les. He's a better singer, much better at writing melodies, plays keys, and bass. Les doesnt even really sing, and melody is not something he would know how to do, and Geddy is great at it. Same reason why there are many drummers than can spin circles around Neil in terms of technical ability, but Neil just also happens to be a great lyricist, so Ill always consider him better than them, more valuable to the band he's in. What are you smokin Sammy and can I have some. Sammy also thinks his albums with V.H. were better than the albums with Roth . Sammy also thinks he will be back in V.H. . So much for what Sammy thinks

Cygnals
I always thought Mike Rutherford was underrated as a bassist as well as John Taylor of Duran Duran. I also like Bernard Edwards of Chic--monster player!
BU4B
just listened to the isolated bass in YYZ in abstract music's post I have no doubt in my mind that my admiration and respect for Geddy would make him No1 in any Bass ranking contest. I suggest you "I'm happy to have Geddy 4th" Sayers need to get right on over there and listen to the man, who has nutured and catered to your musical fetish for all these decades, and listen..... Don't make me tell you twice Then get back in here and be outraged that the Ged's is not classed as the No1 bass player still alive and kicking and more importantly still creating works of art for your aural pleasure Gee's gone too far I think... In my humble opinion I mean...

YYZ Working Man
I agree partially with this list however I would place Geddy at # 1 or # 2 behind or ahead of Entwhistle ............for sure I think Les Claypool should be in the top 5 and MARK KING -LEVEL 42 in top 5 .. He never even made the list ----He is sensational to say the least - U-Tube some MARK KING -
