Holy shit Kazz! Your set has been breeding with itself.... laugh.gif
That's quite a lot to keep track of but it looks great.
What's the pedal to the right of your kick pedal for?

Where's the hole in the front bass head for a mic?  wink.gif

The pedal on the right of the kick pedal controls an auxiliary hi-hat that has two 6" Zil-Bells on it.

And I just take the front head off the bass when I record (see picture in Random Samples).

Ah, cool, Zil-Bells on the aux hat. Nice.

Removing the front head is an interesting approach when recording. What about when you play live? How do you mic it?

We used to place the mic directly in front of the resonate head, but I'm looking into getting a new one with the hole for the mic in it.

Yeah, the mic really needs to be inside the drum for rock music.

The kit I use when I'm rehearsing, it saves me humping my drums around:

Yeah, the mic really needs to be inside the drum for rock music.

This is not the only way to record a bass drum for rock music. Why not listen to every single Led Zeppelin album and then tell me that a mic "has" to been placed "inside" a bass drum for rock music!

Different strokes for different folks. There is no "ONE" correct way! Mic placement, eq-ing and signal flow through and gain structure in any mixing console is an art form. Art follows no rules. Those that break the rules, are usually the best artists!

Breaking the rules is allowed once one knows what the rules are and how to break them. Great artists study standard procedures and techniques then develop their own styles through new techniques (Like say Picaso or Pollack). One cannot break a rule without knowing what they are doing and intentionally doing so.

Not necessarily...oh wise one!

Eddie Van Halen is another example of ground breaking, rule breaking, and writing his own "Book of Music" by doing his own thing...which just happened to be "breaking the rules"....

...this is of course, after infinite guitarists spent countless hours trying to figure out just what Eddie was doing and why their Mel Bay Guitar Method 1 book didn't include anything that Eddie was doing!

Yeah, but he didn't start out doing hammer ons. He learned how to play chords and scales first. Whether he was taught or learned on his own he had to learn certain rules before breaking new ground. His father was professional musician so I am sure he was taught theory by his father.

I'm well aware of how the drums were recorded for Zep albums. If you want to try and duplicate that method, by all means go for it. It will take 2 U67's ($10,000) and a pair of Neve 1073 pre's ($7000) just to get the sound to the board. Don't know to many recording newbies that can spend 17K on 2 mics and 2 pre's.

Of course your allowed to try anything you'd like. You're right, there is no one correct way but there are guidelines that should be learned when you are a newbie to recording.

Here's my acoustic (front-side) kit. The electronic (back-side) is the bottom pic. It's a little off from the way I'd set it up & the whole kit can't be put together for lack of space. This is just an idea.....
