Bastille Dave
QUOTE (The Weapon @ Jul 28 2010, 10:39 PM) 2. Xanadu (creates a dreamy atmosphere, then it erupts) 3. Camera Eye (there's just a great tension/build up - like something's about to happen, then Alex comes in with the open chord and it's a monstrous anthem) In honor of you, I'd hafta say....Count Floyd!! Just listen to that synthesizer!! ok, no really, I agree with you on Xanadu and Camera Eye. Add to that La Villa Strangiato (live and studio), YYZ (when the triangle or whatever-the-heck that thing is starts, you got about 3 seconds until POW! full throttle Rush attack! Witch Hunt is awesome how is starts slow and creepy and puts you right there in the middle of the hunt.

psionic11
Great post!! Every other Rush song has a great, great catchy intro. Think about it... how few songs do they have that DON'T have a great intro? They're in the minority, aren't they? Great intros, great choruses. Great verses, great solos. Great bridges, great extended instrumental sections. And many a great outro. Superb songsmiths, they are. Anywho, here's a few more unmentioned great intros: Fly By Night Cygnus X1 La Villa Strangiato Red Barchetta YYZ New World Man Distant Early Warning Body Electric Manhattan Project Big Money Grand Designs Territories Turn the Page Open Secrets Time Stand Still Tai Shan Show Don't Tell Dreamline Cold Fire Alien Shore Caravan

xXDreamlinerXx
Mystic Rhythms. Something about how the drums just groove, Geddy does that cool little bass run, then the synths come in perfectly. It seriously just about leaves me in a trance.

Slaine mac Roth
One of the ones I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is Before and After. I just love that slow build until alex kicks in with a great riff
karkarius
I really like the way Earthshine starts. But there are so many. I usually prefer when Alex starts with a really hard sound.

Slaine mac Roth
Agree with you there - its one I would love to hear done live. Even if they dropped the intro and went straight into the main body of the song I'm sure it would be awesome

Weatherman
Thanks for reupping this, TexasKing. There are SO many different types of intros in their catalog. If I had to pick ONE......it would be Animate. Because everybody should highlight their greatest strength. Analogy: Guns n Roses started Sweet Child o Mine with that iconic guitar riff.It highlights GnR's greatest asset -- Slash. (Axl was a close second.) Let's be honest: Rush's greatest asset was Neil. No other band could start a song with a killer drum groove like that.So they wisely rode that horse. It's symbolic, in a way.
