Maybe Neil is like me...I express myself much better via the written word than in conversation.

no.gif Maybe you are like Neil.

Yes, thanks for clearing that up.

Nobody knows who the semi-famous drummer is. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's concluded that he is only "semi-famous" in his own mind. Another hanger-on wannabe name-dropper, more likely.

So why did this guy try to attempt to talk to Neil a third time? If he says he ignored him the first 2 times then why didn't he get the hint? And why did he call him 'Neil?' Maybe if he would've said 'Mr. Peart' he could've gotten the reaction he so obviously desperately needed.

Isn't there a rule of thumb at parties that when 2 people are talking you don't join the pair unless invited or you know one of them well. This guy IS a stranger to Neil, why would he want to talk to him?

And if this guy is so well-connected to other people at the party, including the 'star' of the party Freddie Gruber who he says is like a grandfather to him, then why couldn't he have used his obvious people skills sarcasm.gif to be introduced to Peart?

In a video I saw, Neil was sitting right next to Gruber. At some point the author of this 'story' couldn't have gone up to Freddie to say something in plain view of Neil? This would've been a perfect opportunity, "Happy birthday Freddie! You've been like a grandfather to me. I appreciate what you've taught me so much. Thanks. Hey, you're Neil Peart right? I hear Freddie's taught you too. Isn't he great?"

See how easy that is?

Boy, is this topic (and the tangle with Alex one) getting beathorse.gif

I thought it was dying. But it's gotten a blood transfusion, apparently, and lives to fight a few more days. (I know I'm not helping).

Unfortunately, this particular topic is like a vampire - it won't stay dead and buried. I fully expect a variation of same to crop up again within the next couple of months, if not sooner.

It's like a discussion typically found in the Politics and Religions forum. They go on and on.....and it's not unusual for there to be several topics that degenerate into the same discussion as found in other threads.

Maybe we should just start a "LET'S COMPLAIN ABOUT NEIL" megathread. eyesre4.gif laugh.gif

and some not so flattering comments about him from a guy who was there.

Funny thing....

I had no idea that Neil was going to be there. So when I was standing outside, I saw him sitting at the table in the back next to Freddy. They weren't letting people in for the 2nd set yet. So me and my lady friend were standing outside when Neil comes out to get some fresh air. He's looking right at me while he walks out the short corrodor out the front door. I say, "hey Neil"

And he doesn't even flinch, look at me, nor acknowledge me.

So I say, "Hows it going Neil" as he walks by me without saying a word. Treats me as if I was paparazzi or something

I was like

Soooouuuuu.....I just put back on my cheerful and usual smile and decide to head over to the side of the building. Right where the gas station is where he's standing next to somebody talking and I decide to introduce myself formally. I figure...hey....he's just another fellow drummer. No big deal.

As I walk over towards him, some dude in a leather motorcycle riding jacket stands in front of me. Asks me if I know Neil. I was sitting there with this look on my face thinking, "who the F is this guy!!??". So I say no. Then he asks me if I'm with the press or something, again I said no. So I tell him, "Hey...I'm here for Freddys B-day. Freddy is like a grandfather to me". So the guy tells me, "well....Neils talking with one of his friends right now and I don't think he wants to be bothered".

So I look at him and say, "well....ya know. I really didn't want to talk to him anyway".

What an ass.

Ya know...not to toot my horn, but I know some of the best drummers in the world. Some are close friends of mine. Most are usually approachable if not downright the nicest people you'll ever meet (Erskine, Bissonette, Weckl, Novak, Holmes, just to name a few). These guys would run cirles around Neil in the talent dept. But for me to get this kind of treatment at a low key (for Neils stature) gig in the middle of N. Hollywood on a wed night. Uggghhhh.....I wanted to go home and throw all my Rush albums in the trash last night. The guy who I idolized as a kid just served me one of the biggest disses that I've ever been served in years.

Ya...ya....I know what you're going to say. He's a rock star and thats what he's used to getting all the time. You know what? Screw him. I could care less if he was the king of china. He's just another guy. And for him to take that cavalier attitude and put one of his riding buddies in my path to intercept me at a low key gig was just stupid.

Ok....sorry for the rant. But I had to get that off my chest.

Other than that. I was great hanging with Nick Vincent (an amazing drummer/one of Freddys students), Erskoman and his lovely wife, Freddy, Joey, Roger Burns (another of Freddy Students) and Gary Novak. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of other people, but there were so many people there and the music was off the hook that night.

They even did a little trio accoustic guitar thing 1/2 of the 2nd set with some latin dancers in the background as well.

I guess this other drum website recorded the whole evening on proshot with multiple cameras. One of the cameramen told me it'll be available on the net soon. I forget the name of it. Maybe Erskoman knows. I'll call Freddy and ask him. He might know.

Sounds like you might be taking this a little too personally. Neil doesn't know you from Adam. it's well -known that he doesn't like interacting with fans much and very rarely gives interviews. Given what he's been through in the last ten years, I feel fortunate that he's continuing to make music at all.

I'm not slamming you, but just try to put yourself in his shoes. He's always been something of an introverted guy and fame clearly makes him a touch uneasy ("Limelight"). After the millionth time of someone you dont know trying to strike up a conversation with you, you might also find yourself looking for the fire exit. Wait till you get famous.....you'll find out. biggrin.gif

Well said. He's a human being with rights.

I wonder how Neil would go on in a country like Austria, where everybody greets you with a "Gruss Gott", does he ignore each and every one of them in case even in a backwards central european country

here is yet another

Lets get one thing totally crystal clear. I didn't need anything desperrately. I just wanted to say hello to Neil. Thats it.

Background.......

Because me and Freddy are close friends. Several times while hanging w/Freddy, Freddy told me that me and Neil have a lot things in common (drumming, science, motorycles, cars, physics, etc). You just had to know the whole chain of eventst that took place up until that point.

I was hanging out outside to get in because the 1st set was packed. They weren't letting anybody in, even if you knew Freddy. So when I was standing outside, I actually saw Neil against the back wall next to Freddy.

Me and a lady friend of mine were stading outside waiting to get in when Neil came ouf the front door.

Why did I call him by his name? You've got to be kidding me right?

Neil is his name.

I don't look at Neil as anybody else, or any other drummer I've met (or musician for that matter) other than just another guy who plays drums. My only reasoning for wanting to talk to him was because of what Freddy had told me about him in the past.

And lets remember. I'm not a groupee of Rush nor Neil. I'm a musician. Although I started to play drums because of him and the tune La Villa Strangiato, and I internalized most of what I listened to him play....gosh.....20 years ago. I've moved on since then as far as drummers are concerned. The guys I dig on these days are guys like Dave Weckl or Vinnie Colaiuta. Guys that run circles around Neil.

But not to put Neil down for his contribution to prog rock. Him and Rush set the foundations for that. And for that, I'm grateful to him.

But this whole thing about Neil being paranoid of people on the street. Especially at an intimate get together like Freddys B-day whereas most people are "friends". I dunno. That whole scene with Michael Mosbach getting into my face was just plain weird. I've never had to deal with that with any professional musician I've met in my life.

I'm not sure what kind of parties you go to, but I usually go to parties where I have friends that I know. There were many of my friends there that evening. All of the people there were friends of Freddys. Like I said, I didn't know Neil from squat. And again, this isn't the 1st time I've introduced myself to well known drummers. I just have never seen a drummer with a bodyguard. Thats just weird. Especially at a low key event like this wereas most of the people there were invited personally by Freddy as I was. But whatever. To each his own I guess.

Amazes me how so many people will waste so much time on the internet trying to solve something they weren't present at, so they'll assume this and that scenario when they don't know the specifics.

Again....I was standing outside. I told Freddy I couldn't come until later because I had stuff to do. Besides, it usually ends up going late at La Ve Lee with gigs, so I wasn't worried about what time I got there.

But like I said before. I hadn't seen Freddy until I got in for the 2nd show. And this was after the whole ordeal took place outside the club where there were probably 20-30 standing around chit chatting. Which I was one of. If I had been inside on the 1st set, and if I sat at the back table with Freddy, I'm sure things would have gone down differently. Oh well.

But when I saw Neil come out the front door, I said "Hey there Neil". And I tell ya, it was like somebody that didn't give you the time of day. Total poker face. After the 2nd time I said, "how it goin?". I figured that he just didn't hear me amongst the loud crowd at the door.

When I went over to hang with Nick Vincent (another long time student of Freddys), thats when I realized that Neil didn't leave (I thought he did) and saw him talking to a couple of people next to the gas station. I told my lady friend, I'll be right back. I wanna say hi to someone.

Thats when I was confronted by Mosbach. And let me tell you, he was an ass. I mean, now......now that I understand that Neil doesn't like people approaching him (after reading the B.S. at this website and the other Rush groupee website),I had no idea the man was this way. I was treating him like he was nobody else that I haven't met over the years.

Um....that video you saw was taken by me. I was standing next to the railing that was right next to the back table (table of honor). If you saw it at Youtube you would have seen it was uploaded by me, Joesmechanic.

And if you want to talk about gay, what idiot would have said that to Freddy. Freddy knows the relationship we have. Plus....he was being pulled from one person to the next. The only time I got to see him before the end of the 2nd set was when he went to the kitchen to get something to eat. Which is when I had enough alone time to talk to him and give him his B-day card. Once he kind of blew you off, why didnt you just forget about getting Neil to say hi to you and focus on getting your bestest buddy Freddy his birthday card. We all get it, your an incredible friend to the worlds best drummers, and you think Neil is a dick, and his bodyguard is a dick. Fine. Youre also a bit of an attention whore.

Since this whole ordeal started, I've learned alot about Neil, Rush fans AND who Micheal Mosbach is.

This is the person that confronted me outside of La Ve Lee that night. He was also the guy who stood beside me in the hallway next to the back table (table of honor).

A. Its not an ordeal. For f-cks sake a very well known drummer (may have) dissed you. Get over it.

B. Your posting of a guys photo is meaningless regarding proof. And why should we believe you instead of the other posted who pointed out that you were mistaken as to who appraoched you?

C. Most importantly, why should we OR EVEN you give a f-ck????

D. Can I have the last 10 minutes of my life back?

That is all. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

You're getting this story by the 100th person. You don't know the specifics. If you did, you'd understand how inappropriate it was for Moshbach to have acted the way he did at a private B-day party amongst friends.

let's assume Neil dissed you.

why does it need to be broadcast on the net?

It doesn't, which is why I shared my story with my friends at HOD. A forum that I've been a member of for a good 6 years. A forum where pro drummers talk about experiences they've had or information they care to share.

I had no idea this took off like this on the net until Draco from that other board came and posted that the story was up on a Rush groupee site.

And don't worry. Mosbach and another friend of his that was there that evening are trying to safe face with what happened that evening. They even went as far as to make up a lie that I was asked to leave and that I don't hold the job that I hold which is working for the LAFD.

This is character assasination at its worst.
