QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ May 19 2008, 01:26 PM)
QUOTE (GhostGirl @ May 19 2008, 12:54 PM)
QUOTE (circumstantial tree @ May 19 2008, 11:37 AM)
Yes, but my point is that if it is private then why make all of this information available to the public eye? It only invites the kind of attention he doesn't want.

I understand that writing about one's personal tragedies it is helpful and therapeutic, but it doesn't have to go public.

Elizabeth Montgomery was quite the private individual herself and for the most part refused interviews. Apparently she had some bad experiences earlier on so she also put up a shield in the same way that Neil has done. She was kind to her fans when discussing her career and such, but her private life was absolutely off-limits. She didn't publish anything she did not want the public to know.

And my point is that he got that kind of attention even BEFORE writing books. He didn't like it then either.

The obvious example of that is "Limelight"...which came about 20 years before Ghost Rider was written.

Actually, it was a long time after the song came out that I found out that he was referring to fans. I didn't pay attention to all the lyrics but rather the song as a whole.

For clarification on my part and my feelings towards Neil:

I'm not a Neil basher (yeah, nobody has accused me of such, it's just a matter of record here). I'm not going to dismiss Rush music over Neil's misgivings and will continue to buy their material.

I like his drumming, and many, but not all, of his lyrics. I like that he's avid reader and is intelligent.

I even had a crush on him in the mid-late 80's (he had obviously been working out and was looking, ummmm, quite good wink.gif )

However, his attitude could use a little readjusting, imho. No need to call out the overweight woman in the hotel restaurant as an example.

Do I want to meet him? Not really. I like the drummer, the lyricist, and the intelligence. I don't like the person.

Well, all I can add is that from my Aunt's mouth, Neil is a very kind, intelligent, and very conversationally engaging individual.

QUOTE (rushfr:CP @ May 15 2008, 01:49 PM)
QUOTE (Kroy Wen @ May 15 2008, 11:04:46 AM)

When you engage a person (a stranger in these instances) you are giving them a response. This response, from a "normal Joe" is called common courtesy, but when it comes from a celebrity/recognizable person, it is often mis-interpreted as an invitation for further engagement (which is exactly how the person in the initial story took it, when it was only intended as common courtesy). So you (as a celebrity/recognizable person) are faced with a choice EVERY TIME someone shouts out your name as if they know you personally...ignore them and hope they go away (which they usually do if you ignore them) or try (yet again) to be nice and normal and courteous and run the risk (the very likely risk) that they will take that as a green light for further conversation/engagement.

All those who keep saying all Neil needs to do is say "Hi," please reread this quote.

I've noticed a bunch o' folks who say he should have just nodded or something, but according to several other witnesses, he did exactly that and it wasn't enough for the guy.

Knowing what we do of Neil, he's quite likely the kind of person who would find it incredibly rude to allow the spotlight to shine on him rather than on Freddy Gruber. Kind of like upstaging the bride at a wedding.

Aside from the fact, of course, that Neil generally hates being the center of attention amid a bunch of strangers.

If a Stranger walked by or up to me on the street, (or anywhere) and greeted me, to be honest all I would return is a nod.....and I have not at all, (in fact, 10) the number of people saying hi out of the blue to me as Neil does.

If I did, I too would be distant, and with no offence intended.

that is why it is ridiculous to have an opinion about an even that we didn;t witness. this conversation is tame compared to CP.

I'm tempted to spit on him if I ever we cross paths, but I won't because of the contributions he made up to the late 80's.

Neil really ought to move to France, join a nouveau elitist French socialist subculture that meets in cafes where they nibble on french bread and Tomme' vert cheese, sipping bordeaux wine, smoking their Gitanes cigarettes while venomously criticising and trivializing everything that isn't in their shitty little circle. That's how I envision Neil Peart & his mentality.

I wonder how Neil would go on in a country like Austria, where everybody greets you with a "Gruss Gott", does he ignore each and every one of them in case even in a backwards central european country one of them is a Rush fan intent on using his "Gruss Gott" as a starting point for a grilling?

It's probably because Neil wouldn't live up to his fantasies about the band.

I can sympathise with him if he's got an agenda. If I'm on my way to do something, the last thing I want is a sort-of friend from school talking to me in the street about what I'm now doing with my life; I'd rather get to where I want to be without distraction. If I'm aimlessly wandering, that's different.

It's true though, if someone you'd never met came up to you in the street and started trying to talk about your private life, would you not be abit mystified?

how painful can it be to say a simple "hey or hi"? come on.

The only way to get into la ve lee that night is if you a friend of freddies. it's a small club. there were a few other famous jazz drummers there that night. i will not mention their names. it's not like there are NP stalkers at a jazz club. it was mostly family and friends of freddy. marco mendoza and his band played that night. 2 sets of music that night. it was marco's gig to begin with. they also had freddies b-day that night. neil left with his wife shortly after the candles were blown. he just wanted to say hi to freddy and honor his b-day and split. he was in town for a few rush gigs. he doesn't live far from burbank anyhow.

the shit that flies around on the internet is funny. it's like the telephone game. you whisper phrase/word in one persons ear and by the time it gets to the 10th person in line it's a completely different word or phrase.

NP doesn't have the status of lets say tom hanks. so a few drummers want to say how much they love his playing. that night there were no freaks at the two sets. just old people, married couples and a few middle aged guys. the guy who wrote about his experience meant no harm. i'm sure np says hi to people all the time. who knows how he was feeling that day. no big whoop.

He's damned lucky that John Rutsey (RIP) departed the band when he did

On the contrary, I think Geddy and Alex and us fans were lucky to have Neil join Rush. All respect to Rutsey, but there is no comparison skill wise.

Oh, I get it. You're Bill O'Reilly.

Tell me, Bill-- how does this picture make you feel?

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e397/edgyspice/YoungHotAlex.jpg

Don't hold back, now.

I hate Bill O'Reilly- Now I'm offended!!

Yes, that's the young hot Alex Lifeson. My biggest idol in the circum-1980 period.

Will someone please tell me who the semi-famous drummer is that Neil scorned in this thread? Thanks. And I won't continue my rant against NP anymore.
