Intense movies that you liked...

What films have you seen that left you shaking your head. By that, I mean in the sense that it was so warped or disturbing or whatever you want to call it that it took you a while to realize what you just watched. There have been a few where I had to space out and regroup afterwards. I love movies like this. And I want to see your list so I can see more stuff like this. I need ideas people.

My list of intense films:

Memento

Fight Club

8MM

Swimming Pool

Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan

Natural Born Killers

Lost Highway

No Country For Old Men

Lost in Translation

Saw III
Hannibal
Hostel

I'm not too into horror flicks but did see Saw II (I think that's the one... I remember a scene where someone had to walk through a room full of barbed wire or something like that) and Hostel. I could not stomach Hostel. Disturbing on so many levels! I lost it when that guys Achilles tendon was cut.

Horror movies to me are more stomach churners. Not necessarily mindfuck film, IMO. I do like to be scared though. I just can't watch them very often.

The one that springs to mind with me more than any other is Angel Heart (Alan Parker 1987). When it finished, I had to try to remember what town I was in.

Still one of my all time favourite films.

The Legend of 1900
The Deceiver

Unsurprisingly, both are movies starring the phenomenal Tim Roth.

And you can add the recently released Funny Games http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/ to the Tim Roth list.

Janie, I would definitely recommend seeing it or it's original version http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119167/ if you can handle subtitles. These movies are NOT 'torture porn' and have very little onscreen violence, but they are intense. Although they can be dry and lacking visceral thrills at times I'd recommend seeing any of director Michael Haneke's films especially:

Cache http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387898/

The Piano Teacher http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0254686/

Benny's Video http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103793/

There's also a couple Gaspar Noe films that might float your boat:

Irreversible http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/

I Stand Alone http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0157016/

Another one I just thought of is 13 Tzameti http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475169/ which I believe the original director is going to remake in English (just like Haneke did with Funny Games) with Brad Pitt rumoured to be involved.

"Big Fish" by Tim Burton was one of those, I guess.

I loved Big Fish. Loved it. So sad though. It reminded me of another movie that is way up there on the favorite list: Ma Vie En Rose.

Thanks so much for the recommendations RK! I've only seen one that you listed and that was, The Piano Teacher. I liked it well enough. It's definitely one for the "unique" list.
