I just built another replica of his red Strat but something still felt like it was missing.

So, Monday I snagged this Epi LP on Ebay and when it arrives I'll be attacking it with a router and drill press.

This:

Will get this:

I got a great deal on the Epi. $268 and it has Duncan pickups and a hardshell case.

The new Floyd arrived today.

Yes, I'll take a lot of pics during the build.

The red Strat will now stay tuned to drop D just for Between the Wheels (and maybe "Stick It Out" if we decide to do that one).

Looking awesome Pete!

Man if anyone needs their own Rush fan site it would be you - dedicated to your knowledge of Alex's axes and the all the replicas you've built.

And man... if I had known ahead of time I would actually meet Alex and Geddy in Holland I swear I would have brought that strat you built me over there and asked Alex to sign it. I wonder if he would do that or if he's be horrified at the idea?

Anyways this makes a great time to wish you Merry Christmas - and I hope 2008 brings you lots and lots of new guitar projects! I look forward to seeing them.

Hey Pete, I am curious how much maple is on the top of the Epi's. Please report what you see when you route it out. I may do the same with my Epi LP. They claim it is the same spec as a Gibson, but I have had a suspicion that the flamey tops are really nice veneer.

I'll get lots of pics.

The Epi LP Custom I used to own had 1/2" maple top. You could see the bare wood when you pull out the bridge & tailpiece bushings.

The flame is no doubt a maple veneer but I'm sure that veneer is on at least 1/2" maple top.

oh, that's alot of routing converting a fixed bridge to a floyd, isnt it? Do you foresee any issues since that's probably much ticker than a strat?

Yes, pics! Slice that baby open...

Measure twice, cut twice, no wait.....cut first, measure later....ah I would shoot someone..

Has anyone ever played on a headless guitar. Man they are so cool and tiny too but powerful. My friend let me strum a few bars on it back in the 90's. It was fun but harder to play the guitar than keyboards.

Hey pete,

On topic, you do have any experience with trying to upgrade the quality of the wood tone with chemicals? I have a basswood squier I was looking to mod for fun. I was thinking if I strip it down and soak it in wood hardener or oil (something) I might get a deeper tone to some degree. True/False?

Yeah and a headless bass too. They're really cool if you wanna jump around and the strings (If you can find double balled strings) are very easy to change.

Never heard of such a thing.

Personally, I like basswood. Some of the best sounding guitars I've owned were basswood.

I gets a bad rap for some reason but it's a good sounding wood.

This one has a basswood body with a flame maple veneer. It sounds incredibly good. I changed the body to an alder body recently and it doesn't sound as full or warm as it used to.

My Music Man JP6 is made of basswood, and I have no problems with its sound. Quite simply, it sounds great!

Pete, good luck with your endeavor, and I look forward to seeing you pics. I have a friend who built a telecaster, and he made the neck out of a two-by-four...it felt like I was playing a baseball bat, but it was really nice. Of course, everything feels like a baseball bat compager to the MM, even my Les Paul.

Good luck!

The new Floyd Les Paul is done.

Lots of routing involved. I probably took 3 pounds of wood out of it and it's still heavy.

I still have some minor setup work to do to it but it lives, breathes, and stays in tune!

Looks like an awful lot of mahogany and not much maple!

Nice job Pete!
