Oh, I remember it well. RIP, Fernando.

He probably had the lowest ERA of all time for someone with more than 50 IP to start a career.   In 1980, he pitched 17 2/3 in relief with an ERA of 0.     In 1981 in his first five starts, he had 5 complete games and gave up one run for an ERA of 0.20, and his combined ERA up to that point was 0.14.     It doubled over his next two starts by giving up one run in total.

This is hard to even conceive of.

As a lifelong Reds fan - and Dodger hater - how could I not hate Fernando?!

I really hated him when he won the Cy Young Award over the Reds' Tom Seaver.

I HATED HIM!!!  HATE HATE HATE......

I got over it.

Imagine the grief the mouths at the networks would give Lasorda for that kind of usage today -- "He'll be burned out by the All-Star game!" "His elbow is on TJ watch!"

Not to mention his out pitch was the screwball.

I was listening to sports talk radio yesterday and they were talking out the front office wanting to get Fernando into better shape.  Lasorda told them "don't touch him.  Don't go near him!"
