He probably had the lowest ERA of all time for someone with more than 50 IP to start a career. In 1980, he pitched 17 2/3 in relief with an ERA of 0. In 1981 in his first five starts, he had 5 complete games and gave up one run for an ERA of 0.20, and his combined ERA up to that point was 0.14. It doubled over his next two starts by giving up one run in total. This is hard to even conceive of.
Principled Man Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 As a lifelong Reds fan - and Dodger hater - how could I not hate Fernando?! I really hated him when he won the Cy Young Award over the Reds' Tom Seaver. I HATED HIM!!! HATE HATE HATE...... I got over it. 1

Imagine the grief the mouths at the networks would give Lasorda for that kind of usage today -- "He'll be burned out by the All-Star game!" "His elbow is on TJ watch!"

Don't go near him!" 1 1
invisible airwave Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 I went to a game he pitched on his brief time with the Angels when I was 10. He had only 2 and he lost both, though. RIP
