The Visage!  The Fade to Grey!

You know, if I had heard Fade to Grey first I probably would have the Weapon lower.

Is that fair? Not really.  But it's true.

It matters to me that something sounds original to me. And fair or not, I heard the Weapon when I was young and well before Visage. I will forever hear the Weapon out of the context of Visage, even while absolutely agreeing that I'd feel different otherwise.

I will say that I genuinely like the Weapon better, though. That would be true either way.

This disrespect for "Ceiling Unlimited"! It's an outrage!

[interior voice: Maybe you're wrong, and the vocals are, in fact, cringey for some listeners?]

[other interior voice: Shut up! When I want introspection, I'll let you know!]

An outrage, I say!

you're not wrong

This ranking thing is harder than it looks.  like I said, I went back and listened to the full discography and then ranked the songs within each album.  With madrigal firmly at the bottom, I've been going through and grouping songs  thematically by what keeps me from loving them.  Annoying vocals was one such grouping, but it seems I missed a few.  So here's my How Did I Miss That One? list  that should finish off songs that for me have really annoying vocals at some point.

142.  Neurotica - This song opens with a great groove, but when that "Whoah Oh" kicks in, I'm out

141. Stick It Out - The sick grunge-era riff doesn't rescue this one from its vocals

140. Good News First - Does anyone care for the Geddy's late era yodeling?

139.  Wreckers - Not really Geddy's fault, but  "have to be wary...life is contrary"?  Really?

138.  Nocturne - Remove the keyboards and replace it with layered yelling?

Neurotica falls for me as well. I used to have it higher in the strength of everything else, but that same part you hate loses me, too.

Stick it Out is Rush's best example, for me, of going from excitement for a new album to despair. Although it turns out that I liked the album afterall, this is one of the songs I hate the most. Hate the vocals.

Good News First, we agree

Wreckers I like. For whatever reason my issues with Snakes and Vapor go away on Clockwork. Agreed on the lyric, but I guess it doesn't bother me much.

Nocturne is one of the few songs I like on Vapor. The vocals might bug me, but I really like the music enough here to lift it.

Yeah, I'm not going to the mat for any of these. Of them, "Wreckers" is redeemable, but it's an otherwise Forgettable Five.

I like the music as well, and the lead vocals.  But the layered background yells on this one - near the last part of the song - don't seem necessary.

Plus, I have to get songs on the low end my list somehow.

Well outside the top 100, so my ranking of the RUSH catalog is still an exercise in explaining why a group of songs doesn't rate higher.  Revisiting the remaining 137, I can pick out a group of songs that are well-intended but just a little to sappy sweet to merit a higher spot.  A couple of these tunes seem revered here at TRF, but I since I generally lean toward the rocking side of RUSH, it's time to get them out of the way.  So, here's #137 thru 131, the Saccharine Seven.

137. Nobody's Hero - I actually like most of this song a lot.  But that first line is so ham-handed...

136. Hand Over Fist - Another song with great sentiment... and the inspiration of perhaps my favorite RUSH album art

135. Resist - Again, a lovely song.  But not one I care to revisit.

134. Second Nature -  A guilty pleasure that I'd really like to rank much, much higher.  But, to be fair, it fits here.

133. Rivendell - One of my lifelong RUSH concert buddies does a hilarious up-tempo version of this one.

132. Cinderella Man - "Eyes wide open, heart undefended...innocence untarnished".  Makes my teeth ache.

131. The Garden - As on the nose as Neil ever got.

I like all of these on some level, but none of these need to be higher, either.

Rivendell was sooo boring when I first heard it, but when playing my tape I had to either fast forward or just deal. So usually I dealt. And then something clicked. I really like this song. It's another one that is all about the payoff. The slowest build ever to the most subtle of invigorating moments, but when it happens, I just love it.

Resist just doesn't offer much beyond platitudes. It's a nice break for Neil in concert.

I like Hand Over Fist. It's so pop, but whatever. I like it.

Nobody's Hero makes a great point in a painful way, like Second Nature. But it's a better song.

Cinderella Man, the line you refer to, fits the story referenced pretty well, I think. This is my favorite of the bunch.

The Garden, whatever. One of my favorite albums, and the emotion of the track is well done, but it's no where near my favorite off that album.

Time for another bunch of songs that don't quite hit the mark for me.  There are many, many song lyrics that Neil wrote that made an impression on me for being not only well-written but smart.  Occasionally, though,  I think his pedantic nature got the best of him to the detriment of the song.  So here are the ones that I'll classify as Just A Bit Too Smart for Their Own Good.

130. Anagram - I'm a natural puzzler, so I got the wordplay right out of the gate.  A clever idea, but it didn't make for an enduring RUSH classic.

129. Larger Bowl - "A pantoum" is better when you don't announce it as such.

128. Animate - Sting & Co did Carl Jung better.  Much better.

127. Totem - Like Anagram, it's a fun first listen.

126. A Farewell To Kings - A rant against the Powers That Be reduced to its simplest terms.

125. Cygnus X-1 Book II - A big improvement on Book I, but still the amazing music doesn't save it for me.  Once the lyrics and vocals kick in, I'm usually out.

I love Anagram. It's completely self indulgent but it's an indulgence I share. It's odd that it wasn't vetoed, though.

I agree on Larger Bowl, though in fairness he did the same thing with Anagram.

Animate's a good song In fine with it. But it's not Synchronicity.

Totem doesn't really work for me.

I like Farewell, Outside of an epic it's hard to convey every nuance.

Hemispheres II is sloppy lyrically, but that music is perfection for me.

A bit high, isn't it?

Probably.  Though it doesn't bother me as much as some parts of other songs, and I really like Alex's guitar work throughout.  Take out the silly flute noises and maybe change the tempo and the song could be much better.

Welcome to the "It's not you, it's me" section of my ranking.  These songs have everything I like about RUSH, but for some reason they just don't connect like others do.  Here's a dozen or so RUSH Songs I Know I Should Love But Don't...

124.  In The Mood - My least favorite off the debut, an album I love.  For some reason I like it's cousin I Think I'm Going Bald much better

123. Presto  -  Title track off another of my favorite RUSH albums, but it ranks toward the bottom.  Not bad, just not very engaging

122. Countdown - I love parts of the song - the middle keys section in particular - but it's plodding through the rest

123. Entre Nous - I used to like it more, and it's on my favorite album

122. Marathon - Some great parts to it, especially the building end.  That part's worth the wait, I think.

121. Bastille Day - The song kicks ass, classic hard-rocking RUSH.  Over time it's slid down the ranking, though

120.  Something For Nothing - It just feels incomplete.  The intro is fantastic, but the end needs more to it

119.  In the End - I used to really like it, but these days it's a chore to listen to

118.  Double Agent - This late-career attempt to capture some of their progginess falls short with the silly talking bits and "So Tiiiight!"

117. Armor and Sword - It's a rocker but a plodder that's too long and carries on

118. Prime Mover - I love the subject matter, and it likely would have worked better on a heavier album

117.  One Little Victory - Kick ass drums and lyrics, but once Geddy goes higher register it grates on me

116.  Far Cry - A rocker that suffers from too many Doo-Doo-Doos

Ok, a lot to look at here.

In the Mood holds charm because it's such a common tension break in concert. Simple and fun, nothing to think about. I have it quite low because it's a first album song that I barely see as Rush, but I like it. Like all of the first album songs it drops because to my ears it doesn't belong in the first place.

Presto is a pretty song where nothing musically happens. A perfect in the middle song.

Countdown is a song I love. It's low for many people, though. I've learned to accept that. :)

Entres Nous  has risen over the years. But it's a middle song for sure.

Marathon has also risen, but not very high. Another middle song.

Bastille Day has dropped for me as well. And honestly it might be my own fault. I asked for something by Rush for Christmas, it was going to be my first Rush album. I recieved Caress of Steel. It was always the under selling cheapest tape available. But Bastille Day was the first song, and for a long long time it was the best song. I probably overplayed it.

Something for Nothing is the best song off 2112, and I have it very high. I agree, Goose, you should like it more. :)

In the End I've always loved and it's never risen it dropped. Always ranked high. It's slow, it's simple, and I love it anyway.

Double Agent I'd have lower. The talking just doesn't work.

Armor is a Good song off a very weak album. It's fine here.

One Little Victory I agree completely on. That opening was a lie. That opening says the song and the album will be a return to greatness. And then it lets you down.

Far Cry out performs One Little, because that song is good to the end. The chorus pulls it through the faults. I have it higher. The album though, another disappointment.

Prime Mover is a song I love beyond explanation. It's top five for me. I don't think anyone else will have it even top 20.

This is deeply concerning to me.
