I am surprised by this grouping, but not so much by "2112"! I know there are lots of Rush fans who prefer the shorter, punchier songs, and roll their eyes a bit at the proggy excesses of twenty-minute, multi-part, would-be epics, as though a rock album was The Ring Cycle or something. I am not one of those fans, but I respect their right to exist.

But I would have ranked "Workin' Them Angels," "BU2B" ( a great rocker), and "How It Is" all a little higher, so as a grouping, these all seem pretty low (but "Alien Shore" would be even lower, so the average is weird).

OK, I know which of these picks will get the most hate. And I get it. But I have a very personal reason for rating this song so high. As my dad was dying of Alzheimer's, I would go to work and get to the bus stop early and listen to this song and In the End and try to deal with what was happening. So hate away, but all I will say in response is also one of the songs that will be on tomorrow's list. Is it a better song than the ones above it? Not really. But this is my list so this is how it is and how it's going to be.

Sweet Miracle is from VT so that means for me it drops way out of the top 100. Near the bottom of my list (along with all of VT - what can I ay, I just don't like the album)

The Wreckers is decent. Top 100 likely but there are a number of songs ranked below it that I would rank above it so it would likely be lower on my list.

Rivendell I enjoy and its clearly a top 100 song for me. I might rank it a bit lower (again because there are song you ranked lower that I would rank above it) but I actually have no problem with the ranking - esp. given your explanation. But even beyond that I enjoy the song. Perhaps a bit lower but clearly top 100 for me. Just don't get the dislike for the song.

New World Man is a hard song to pin down. It sort of moves around based on my mood. Could be a top 25 song or it could be a top 75 song. So I have no disagreement with you ranking. But clearly in the top 100 - likely much closer to the top 25 the the 75th position.

No point in talking about Workin' or Alien- you didn't notice I had them in the list.
Why?
Because you had to double check that you read that right. 2112 at 62.

Now of course it's sometimes higher. I love every song at this point.

So why does the iconic 2112 drop so much? Because I don't like some of the sections. The opening through Temples would be top ten for sure. The ending is fantastic. Some of the middle is just not my thing at all. So it drops.

BU2B and How it Is, like many songs coming, can't hold a candle to the great moments in 2112. But overall I like them more.

Some very very popular songs are in my top ten, I'm not just trying to be a contrarian.

Ok - calm down. Take this one song at a time. My goodness. What a shock.

Working' Them Angeles is a top 20 song for me. I clearly like it more than you do.

Alien Shore is a top 100 song. Not certain exactly where so no big disagreement with you on that one.

2112 I have at #1 on my list. The start is awesome, for me the middle is awesome (The Oracle in particular) and the end is very good. Not a bad part to it for me. Wow - just stunned but to each their own. I will shock and amaze you with a few of my rankings.

BU2B is way outside my top 100. If you took the #62 and doubled it I would think the ranking would still be to high. But again, its from CA and I find the album, up to Halo Effect, to be almost unlistenable.

How It Is is even lower on my list then BU2B would be. But again, its on VT which I find to be unlistenable (not almost unlistenable). The song has potential but just never lives up to it.

2112 might be low for me, but it's not because it's epic. I have Fountain, Natural Science, Camera Eye, Xanadu, and Hemispheres II far higher.

And if I were rating these based on objective importance, 2112 would be first because I agree that it saved the band

I am happy with all of these placements. 3 solid CA songs. A great outro in Big Money, and a nice example of the Rush we'd be getting to know. None have top 20 status, but If never begrudge anyone giving them a to 40 spot. We're in that range that it can be assumed you're a fan of all of these

Well since you asked....

Clockwork Angeles falls way out of my top 100. Not close.

Caravan is even worse. Even further out of my top 100. I dislike both songs.

Wish Them Well is a good song but I don't think its in my top 100. BTW - I have reconsidered The Wreckers & the more I think about it, the more likely it is that would not rank it in my top 100. Decent song but Rush just has a lot of better songs.

Fly By Night I would likely rank a bit higher but basically about right. It might crack my top 50 - just.

The Big Money is at least a top 50 song. Perhaps a top 30 song. I think you undervalue it.

I like Carve Away The Stone. IMO its the 2nd best song in T4E. Only Resist is better. That being said, the more I have thought about it the more I think it would not crack my top 100. Good song but Rush just has many that are better.

T4E is decent but falls out of the top 100.

Force 10 is clearly a top 100 song for me. No problem with this ranking.

Face Up is ok but, the more I think about it, it would not crack my top 100.

The Big Money I would rank higher. It might crack my top 30. Very good song.

OK, I expect to take a lot of hate for this group, especially VT haters. I didn't like the album at first but gave it a couple more listens and now it's moved up quite a bit. I'd actually move Ghost Rider up if I did this today.

The other controversy will be Roll The Bones being as high as it is. If it wasn't for the rap, which ruins the song for a lot of people but not me, this might be top 25 the rest of it is so good. I do wish they'd rerecord it without the rap but realize that will never happen.

Beneath, Between and Behind is a top 12 song for me, so I'd say you have it too low. I'm with you one Earthshine and Ghost Rider, very similar rankings for both. One Little Victory I have a bit lower.

Same opinion but lower ranking on Roll the Bones. Rap doesn't ruin it, but it could have been higher without it. For me it's their usages of slang that doesn't sound like them, but rather like adults trying to "relate" to the youth. If you're gonna rap, use your own voice.

The Trees went from first to fourth on Hemispheres for me over the years. Hemispheres, by the way, lasted long than any other album without losing a track on this list. Not bad, Hemispheres!

Chain Lightning is my favorite song off Presto and it always was. I love the story behind it, and having kids myself I really relate to it. It's quite beautiful and definitely would sometimes be higher on this list. This is probably as low as it ever goes. And it kills off Presto, here, joining the debut to exit this list.

Red Sector A is a great song, and paints the torment well for me. I suffers a bit for musical indulgences of the era, but as you can see it doesn't suffer much.

Jacob's Ladder rounds out the pre-top 50 tracks on this list. Another song that paints a picture rather well with music. It could have been an instrumental as the music almost says more than the words.

All great songs, and I suppose in the opinion of myself on that one day a while back, the next 50 are even better. We'll see if tomorrow's me agrees with yesterday's version.

Most of my ratings are fairly close but I have most higher. Chain Lightning I have quite a bit lower. I also still have MP and Hemispheres fully intact.

OK, I expect to take a lot of hate for this group, especially VT haters. I didn't like the album at first but gave it a couple more listens and now it's moved up quite a bit. I'd actually move Ghost Rider up if I did this today.

The other controversy will be Roll The Bones being as high as it is. If it wasn't for the rap, which ruins the song for a lot of people but not me, this might be top 25 the rest of it is so good. I do wish they'd rerecord it without the rap but realize that will never happen.

Well since you mentioned it, let me disagree with you on this batch.

Ghost Rider is the best song (IMO) on VT. Which means its way outside my top 100. Likely it would be around 140 - 145 for me.

Earthshine is slightly worse.

RTB is not bad - its decent but the rap ruins the song for me. Falls out side my top 100.

One Little Victory - more VT, another song I dislike. Down below 140, someplace in the bottom of the barrel.

Beneath Between & Behind - an excellent song. I agree with you on this one. Clearly top 100. No argument with this ranking.

Nocturne is a Vapor Trail song that really gained ground since the album's release, looking good at 55

The Trees went from first to fourth on Hemispheres for me over the years. Hemispheres, by the way, lasted long than any other album without losing a track on this list. Not bad, Hemispheres!

Chain Lightning is my favorite song off Presto and it always was. I love the story behind it, and having kids myself I really relate to it. It's quite beautiful and definitely would sometimes be higher on this list. This is probably as low as it ever goes. And it kills off Presto, here, joining the debut to exit this list.

Red Sector A is a great song, and paints the torment well for me. I suffers a bit for musical indulgences of the era, but as you can see it doesn't suffer much.

Jacob's Ladder rounds out the pre-top 50 tracks on this list. Another song that paints a picture rather well with music. It could have been an instrumental as the music almost says more than the words.

All great songs, and I suppose in the opinion of myself on that one day a while back, the next 50 are even better. We'll see if tomorrow's me agrees with yesterday's version.

Nocturne (IMO) would be high if it was ranked about 155. It turns me off.

The Trees is a hard song to rank. There are times I like it and times I don't go crazy for it. Overall I guess its a good song but Rush just has better. This will shock many but I am not certain if it would crack my top 100. In fact, I don't think it would. Like I said, its decent but Rush just has better.

Chain Lightning is from Presto so that means it is in my top 100. Not exactly where. But no arguments with this ranking.

Red Sector A - no arguments at all with this ranking. Good song.

Jacobs Ladder does not thrill me. Its ok but sort of blah for me. Falls out side my top 100. Not bad, but nothing I really go wild for either. Just sort of filler material IMO.

There will no doubt be pushback here. In the End is overrated, I'll admit, but for the same reason as Rivendell. Between the Wheels would be higher but for the dissonance at the beginning. I almost never gave Nocturne a chance after the beginning line, which seems both too trite and glib but getting past that, this song rawks! Losing It is a slow song which usually is the kiss of death but the lyrics are profound and the music haunting, it's remarkable that someone as yoiung as Neil was at the time would have that much insight into aging and write so poignantly about it. Best I Can is the reverse, a good song with such goofy and dated lyrics that it's fun to just belt out (with no one around, of course). I think that, with the exception of Losing It and maybe BTW this batch will be considered overrated. So let the hate flow!

Those first four songs are excellent, suffering for you exactly how they suffer for me, but overall great songs.

Best I Can is really a pre-Neil song, it's performed with Rutsey live, even. You have this far far far far far too high. :)

I don't get the hate for Out Of The Cradle. I love it. ENDLESSLY ROCKAING!!

Anagram however, should be #165. There is no other Rush song that rubs me as wrong as that one.

I almost never gave Nocturne a chance after the beginning line, which seems both too trite and glib but getting past that, this song rawks!

It's hard to go wrong with the top 50 -- unless you leave "The Big Money" out of it -- but "Nocturne," really? Huh.
