I'm probably one of the few that really likes this song. Yeah it's got an uptempo soft rock vibe but Geddy is in top form and this song might contain Alex's most underrated solo.

[song outro]   And that's "Leader of the Band" on your Fogelberg Friday...this is DJ73 playing all of your lite rock favorites at LITE-FM.   Coming up after the break, we've got James Taylor, Seals and Crofts, Christopher Cross, and a new band out of Canada, Rush, with a new soft rock classic, Open Secrets.   That's next, at LITE-FM.

101. “In The Mood”, Track 6/8 (3:36), Rush (1974)

Rush - Entry 4 out of 8

Ah, yes - the good ol' tune about f***in'. Like all songs from the debut, it is very well produced - they don't put it to waste with this catchy and memorable riff. But let's not kid ourselves - Rush was already a nerdy band before Neil hopped on. "Hey baby, it's a quarter to eight/I feel I'm in the mood/Hey baby, the hour is late/I feel I've got to move". Neeeeeerrrrds!

How is this album doing?

8. “Need Some Love”, Track 2/8 (2:16) - #153/173
7. “Here Again”, Track 4/8 (7:30) - #140/173
6. “Take A Friend”, Track 3/8 (4:27) - #118/173
5. “In The Mood”, Track 6/8 (3:36) - #101/173

Hold Your Fire - Entry 5 out of 10

This one sounds like a leftover track from Power Windows to me - which is a good thing. At the same time, it also proves to me that this was a great transition album into Presto. This has of the best messages from Hold Your Fire, how we all deal with psychological damage and there's better ways to go about treating it - although the chorus, however, is... a way to spread the message. "Well, I guess we all have these feelings/We can't leave unreconciled/Some of them burned on our ceilings/Some of them learned as a child".

Previously on my list...

111. “Where’s My Thing? (Part IV, “Gangster Of Boats” Trilogy)”, Track 5/10 (3:49) - Entry 7/10, Roll The Bones (1991)
110. “Summertime Blues”, Track 1/8 (3:43) - Entry 7/8, Feedback (2004)
109. “Armor And Sword”, Track 2/13 (6:36) - Entry 8/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)
108. “The Main Monkey Business”, Track 6/13 (6:01) - Entry 9/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)

9. “Second Nature”, Track 4/10 (4:36) - #134/173
8. “High Water”, Track 10/10 (5:33) - #112/173
7. “Turn The Page”, Track 8/10 (4:55) - #106/173
6. “Open Secrets”, Track 3/10 (5:38) - #102/173

For me the run of Power Windows / HYF / Presto was Neil at his lyrical best.  Every song is in my top 100 so I have this higher than you do.

This seems about right -- a good, middling song. I don't get a lot of the dismissiveness of the debut album (Who's the forum member whose thing is "DDD -- Don't Dismiss the Debut"?). I think it's a good rock album, and while the lyrics are mostly crap, the music is from the same guys who would do the music for the next forty years, just in its ur-form.

This song is ok but lower for me.  I would likely have ranked all of the songs from this album by now with the exception of Working Man.  Thats all the way up at #11.

100. “We Hold On”, Track 13/13 (4:13), Snakes & Arrows (2007)

Snakes & Arrows - Entry 10 out of 13

Wow, they realllly closed this album with a banger. Neil goes on a rampage with the toms, Alex has some of the most interesting guitar elements throughout the whole album, and Geddy's voice is perfectly mixed. Why is it only this low? - that is because of the embarrassing splice that can be heard at 1:18 in. Woops!

Another "uptempo low-intensity happy-rocking album closer." Not a bad song but I often hit Stop before it starts.

Lots of interesting takes are awaiting in the 90's, just awaiting to heat this thread! Oh - what's this? #99? Oh, boy! Looks like this one will heat the thread for sure!

We let go, and allow this one to drop down to number 140 or something.

The idea of listening to Geddy sing "Let It Go" is a mindbender . . .

As for this song, somewhere lower sounds about right.

Woops!

Previously on my list...

101. “In The Mood”, Track 6/8 (3:36) - Entry 4/8, Rush (1974)
100. “We Hold On”, Track 13/13 (4:13) - Entry 10/13, Snakes & Arrows (2007)

How is this album holding up?

13. “Bravest Face”, Track 10/13 (5:12) - #171/173
12. “The Way The Wind Blows”, Track 7/13 (6:28) - #160/173
11. “Spindrift”, Track 5/13 (5:24) - #157/173
10. “Hope”, Track 8/13 (2:03) - #150/173

For me this song would be in the top 100 but likely a bit higher than you have it.

What shocks me is the extent to which we don't agree on this album.  You have eliminated "We Hold On", "The Main Monkey Business", "Armor & Sword", "The Larger Bowl", "Hope" & "The Way The Wind Blows" - all of which would be in my top 100.  "Spindrift" might, perhaps, get to my top 100.  But don't worry - by this time you must be sensing that I will drop some songs out of the top 100 that will shock you.  So it should even out (somewhat).

Looking forward to the 90's.

99. “Cinderella Man”, Track 4/6 (4:20), A Farewell To Kings (1977)

A Farewell To Kings - Entry 2 out of 6

Damn, this album is weird. There's an eleven minute song about milk and honeydew, and a ten minute song about flying into black holes. Now we have a four minute song paying tribute to the movie Mr. Deeds Goes To Town. "Cinderella Man" is certainly a progressive piece of rocking out, although the guitars are just a little bit scratchy for my taste. This does much better live, especially where Geddy yells "make it funky!"

How is this album doing?

6. “Madrigal”, Track 5/6 (2:35) - #147/173

5. “Cinderella Man”, Track 4/6 (4:20) - #99/173

This one gets a lot of hate around here, but I love it and have it much higher.

Pretty good song, I like the solo section. I don't have my list handy but I think I have it ranked a little higher than this.

Good song but it likely falls out of my top 100.  Nothing wrong with it.  Its enjoyable.  Rush just has even better songs.

98. “Totem”, Track 6/11 (4:58), Test For Echo (1996)

Test For Echo - Entry 9 out of 11

Easily one of the album's highlights for me. To me, this is most sonically interesting one to my ears off of Test For Echo - a jaunty tune that has plenty more layers of instruments in comparison to the rest of the album. Pantheism and secular humanism are certainly interesting topics for Rush to dive into, especially on an album like this one. Shame that after this song, Neil makes lame dog metaphors and writes a song about modems - lovely, timeless album, huh?
