Walter Becker RIP

My heart just sank. :(

It's an end to an era. I've always had a deep connection with the band...the wry humor. Remember that conversation we had the other day in the Simon & Garfunkel thread? The article on Walter's passing that started this thread had this quote:

Becker said, "That's sort of what we wanted to do, conquer from the margins, sort of find our place in the middle based on the fact that we were creatures of the margin and of alienation, and I think that a lot of kids our age were very alienated. To this day when I read some text that somebody writes about alienation, I always think to myself, 'Gee, they make it sound like it’s a bad thing!'

Right on, Walter!

I hate, I just absolutely hate, hate , hate, hate, hate, getting older. No one prepared me for this. It's awful. It's gotten to the point where I envy those who died young, They escaped having to live through this. If I could string more than a half sentence together these days, and didn't trip all over my words when my mind goes blank, I'd write a book warning others about what it's like.

Would there be significantly more views or comments if the heading said "Walter Becker from Steely Dan RIP?" Just wondering because I don't think everyone would know who he is without the SD association.

This is the day of the expanding man

That shape is my shade

There where I used to stand

It seems like only yesterday

I gazed through the glass

At ramblers, wild gamblers

That's all in the past

You call me a fool

You say it's a crazy scheme

This one's for real

I already bought the dream

So useless to ask me why

Throw a kiss and say goodbye

I'll make it this time

I'm ready to cross that fine line

[Chorus]

I'll learn to work the saxophone

I play just what I feel

Drink Scotch whiskey all night long

And die behind the wheel

They got a name for the winners in the world

And I want a name when I lose

They call Alabama the Crimson Tide

Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall

A victim of laughing chance

This is for me

The essence of true romance

Sharing the things we know and love

With those of my kind

Libations

Sensations

That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper

Through these suburban streets

Make love to these women

Languid and bittersweet

I'll rise when the sun goes down

Cover every game in town

A world of my own

I'll make it my home sweet home

[Chorus]

This is the night of the expanding man

I take one last drag

As I approach the stand

I cried when I wrote this song

Sue me if I play too long

This brother is free

I'll be what I want to be

From Rolling Stone.

Farewell, Walter Becker: Remembering the Elusive Genius of Steely Dan

Most fans heard him (Walter Becker) talk for the first time in the 1999 VH1 Classic Albums doc about the making of Aja – a TV moment every bit as classic as Aja. It changed the public perception of Steely Dan as drastically as Beyond The Lighted Stage changed the perception of Rush, introducing Becker as the mischievously wry professor that live audiences would come to cherish over the years.
