My biggest surprise by FAR when I joined TRF was that anyone liked what to me has always been the absolute clusterf*ck disaster that is VT. I still don't get it. Rushgoober.. I.. I.. never knew! You've kept your true VT feelings to yourself so well! Cute response, and funny, but the album is still an embarrassment to their legacy. All I can say is thank God for Snakes and Arrows, and especially for Clockwork Angels, so we can move on from that unfortunate chapter in Rush history... VT, on the other hand, is a brilliant album. Nice to see some VT appreciation! VT has some of Neil's best lyrics, period. None of the usual pontifications, just raw, human emotion. The anxst-ridden music fits perfectly, as does the raw production. Love it! It's the return of the spirit of I'll certainly be endlessly rocking out to it!

It seems to me you're the one of the few who feels the need to have to move on...we hardly look upon it as anything to be embarrassed about thoroughly enjoying.
  3. It was absolutely a comment on the mid '80s. With all the general corruption, greed, shallowness and cynicism rampant among those in positions of power and influence (government, media, etc.) Neil was get across the idea of the difficulty in recognizing it and rebelling against it (swimming against the stream...). A lot of substance without style going on back then which has continued to increase right up to the present. One of many anti-conformity Rush songs.
  4. QUOTE (HalfwayToGone @ Oct 8 2012, 07:20 AM) Don't forget "Stick It Out." Great song. Since it's been played recently and if they happen to feature Counterparts in the future (meaning about 4 songs), I would be happy with Animate, Cut To The Chase, Between Sun and Moon, Alien Shore.
  5. QUOTE (CygnusGal @ Oct 12 2012, 06:50 PM)QUOTE (thirteen @ Oct 12 2012, 07:38 PM)Blackmore via having more fingers hahaha. Nah seriously though I'd give Blackmore the hypothetical win, but damn Django was something real special. Imagine if he had access to all the 'trickery' of today's shredders (delay effects, noise gates etc)? Two fingers of fury. Totally agree. Blackmore was the finest of them all, imo. He usually gets crowded out in favor of Jimi or Jimmy. Good choice! Of course, it is all rather superfluous. They are all great players each with their own wonderful and unique style. Blackmore's way way up there in my book. I think of him as the missing link between Hendrix and Van Halen. Someone who never gets enough recognition in these types of discussions is Peter Green.
  6. QUOTE (D3strukt @ Oct 8 2012, 06:35 AM)Eddie just does stupid tapping shit. He is one of many same sounding late 70's, 80's guitarists. Don' tell me "You're wrong" or "You're on crack" or whatever whimsical retort you have. It's not going to change my opinion. As a former guitarist, I never EVER wanted to EVER Idolize that horrible man. His talent isn't the best either. Alex is an AWESOME guitar player, and has more emotion in his fingertips than Eddie does in his whole body. f**k technical shit. Emotional playing is where it actually comes from. I've got to agree...I think Alex is clearly the better player and superior all around musician. I look at it like this: Alex could most likely learn the VH material and do a credible job playing a gig with them whereas I have my doubts how well Eddie could pull off playing a full Rush show. So they ended up with a final pairing of Eddie Van Halen & Brian May? That's pretty weak.
  7. If The Camera Eye can be played after such a long absence, I can't think of any reason Jacob's Ladder couldn't. It should be as it's one of their greatest, most majestic tracks and one of the major reasons Permanent Waves is so highly regarded as one of, if not the best, Rush album. It would be absolutely killer and monumental live.
  8. Thank goodness it happened when it did. The original burst of the '50s rock n rollers had by then pretty much dissipated. The entire British rock revolution of the '60s may never have existed in quite the same way without the Beatles.
  9. Well it's that time of the year with Halloween approaching for that sinister sound of Sabbath. Ozzy's menacing mournful wail, Iommi's evil and doom laden riffs, Geezer's solemn brooding bass and Ward's thunderous drumming provide the ideal soundtrack for the season. Here's my picks for the Sabs' 10 scariest tracks. 1. Black Sabbath - face to face with the Devil himself...the definitive Sabbath track 2. Electric Funeral - talk about yer evil riffs and Ozzy delivers a downright demented vocal performance of the hellish, nightmarish lyrics 3. Iron Man - futuristic Frankenstein story...that lumbering intro with distorted voice is still one of rock's most memorable and spinechilling moments 4. War Pigs - another ominous and bloodcurdling intro with some absolutely frightening lyrical imagery courtesy of Geezer perfectly underlined by Ward who really lays it down here. Interestingly, two of the most effective aspects of this track the band had nothing to do with. The siren during the intro and the sped up outro were entirely the idea of either the producer or the engineer. 5. Hand of Doom - "...now you're gonna die!" 6. Megalomania - great doomy intro and appropriately maniacal, borderline insane vocal delivery from Ozzy (which he matches on most of the Sabotage album actually) 7. Into The Void - some simply diabolical and oppressive Iommi riffery right here 8. Children of the Grave - cool spooky outro 9. Planet Caravan - nice relaxed yet eerie atmosphere 10. Wicked World - just for the title alone For the Dio era I'd mention E5I5O or Falling Off The Edge of the World (particularly the intro)
  10. QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Oct 11 2012, 11:58 AM)Doom & Gloom is marvellous. Nice to have them back! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPFGWVKXxm0 Not bad at all for a bunch of geezers pushing 70. Mick's sounding surprisingly vital and fresh still (moreso than DLR to me). But who's actually playing on this track? I had heard Keith was having problems with his hands making it difficult for him to play and it doesn't sound like Charlie on the drums. I would highly recommend the DVD of their 1978 Texas show that was recently released.
  11. Goober, I totally get what you're saying about Rush being your band and all and sure anyone has the right to express their disappointment or disenchantment about anything. I wasn't referring to you specifically but there are some longtime fans who feel entitled to the right to demand and expect certain things from the band. I can't think of another rational explanation for the outright anger and venom and vicious attacks on the band about the current setlist....Can you? Admittedly it's a pretty small number of folks who feel that way and it doesn't really concern me very much, but you gotta admit they seem to take it way too personally.
  12. Don't worry...I won't I couldn't care less about it honestly
  13. QUOTE (Lerxster @ Oct 4 2012, 04:42 AM)Thanks to RIAB's reporting, Cliff Burnstein has recently became a member of the nominating committee. This is why Rush was nominated. This is probably the only reason Rush was nominated. And, they were nominated. That doesn't mean they go in. I stopped caring about their induction a few years ago. I'm not sure how I'm greeting this nomination, other than finally the snub is lifted, and thanks Uncle Cliff. RRHOF is suppose to announce this on thier facebook page. How rock and roll I never cared about it from the very beginning. And Deep Purple finally nominated for the first time 2 months after Jon Lord dies (not that it would mean much to him anyway) ? What a crock!!
  14. QUOTE (eshine @ Oct 3 2012, 11:29 PM)QUOTE (drgrendel @ Oct 3 2012, 10:00 PM) I'm sorry, but I am of the opinion that if RUSH wishes to be successful "touring band," they gonna have conform a bit. seriously? SERIOUSLY??? Speaking of missing the point.... Another thing - how many casual Rush fans are there really? I think far less of a perecentage than just about any other band. Rush fans have made it their reputation of being hardcore, rabid, loyal and devoted. Just the phrase "casual Rush fan" strikes me as a bit of an oxymoron and a contradiction in terms.

  18. QUOTE (go2wrk@95974 @ Sep 26 2012, 11:55 PM)with no grey hair on my head yet, except on my sideburns, it's grey and black. Same here but I've had that since about age 30 (I'm 42 now). I don't physically feel any different than I did 20 years ago. I could be deluding myself but I really don't feel like I've lost anything, except for a few teeth along the way . The key for me is positivity, optimism, not stressing or worrying and a rock n roll attitude to life.
  19. I think you definitely did more than what most people would do. Whenever I'm approached for change or a couple of bucks by someone who doesn't look too well off, if I have something to spare I usually just go ahead and give it to them. I really don't care what they end up using it for. After all, it's not going to affect me financially or personally so it's no skin off my nose.
  20. I like Permanent Waves as a wry comment on the current musical fads and trends of the time and their own place within it. Also, Grace Under Pressure is cool because that's what it's about...keeping your cool. As is Caress of Steel since I don't think anyone really knows what it's supposed to mean.
