  1. It was very generic and looks like computer generated art(possibly because most of it was). Not that it's saying much but the music was better than the artwork. I like the Marillion covers and also the first few Asia(yes I know they weren't posted but they were from the 80's) and Genesis duke. The others not so much. Those Yes album covers were pretty lame and this is coming from a big Yes fan.
  2. I saw someone post this online. I have one of their albums and it's very good. Sad news. RIP.
  3. The Moody Blues, any of their albums from 1967 to 1972. That's seven albums. For ELP any of the first 4 albums, that's ELP, Trilogy, Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery. I would add long distance voyager by the Moody Blues but only after he's heard the classic seven you mentioned(start with to our children's children's children or days of future passed maybe). For ELP he probably wouldn't need any others except maybe pictures at an exhibition or maybe the welcome back my friends live album. Although not mentioned in this poll I highly recommend checking out the band Yes and also the 70's albums by Genesis(mostly PG era).
  4. Both about the same. It's hard for me to choose one over the other. My guess would be the Moody Blues are a bit more underrated on a site like this though and I wouldn't expect them to win(or even come close).
  5. Huge prog fan here. I got into Rush around the same time I also got heavily into Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, ELP, etc. I was into Led Zeppelin just before them but with prog there was a sort of escapism involved with the longer tracks and interesting musical passages that drew me in. It's not for everyone and some people don't consider Rush to be part of that but when I heard Hemispheres on tape(borrowed from my brother's friend)I was already into those 70's English prog bands and for me Rush fit right in. Even the 80's stuff has heavy prog influences imo.
  6. Bruce for me. For the longest time I didn't like Tom Petty at all and while he has grown on me I still prefer Bruce.
  7. I was thinking that myself. I don't think so but I could be wrong.
  8. Sorry to hear that. He's been doing these live facebook broadcasts since April every week for at least 2 hrs, sometimes more, interacting with us, etc. Maybe now he "gets it " Well, I might eventually get over it. I'm a big fan of Marillion although I prefer the later era with "H."
  9. Very sad news. I have all their albums up to and including 0u812. I need to hear some of the later ones too. Anyway, I think his playing changed rock forever. I don't consider him a heavy metal guitarist like some do but I can see how he was influential in that genre. RIP Eddie.
  10. Apparently this is his very last album. I actually met him once a long time ago and he was rather rude so I kind of doubt I will buying any of this albums anytime soon. Rule number of being a musician: don't bite the hand that feeds you.
  11. Me too. Also, I'm pretty sure if there was no Yes you would not have Rush or at the very least Rush would be an entirely different band.
  12. Maybe sometime in the 90's. After counterparts I kind of lost track. My stepmother(now ex step mother)bought me Test for echo in 97 probably in 1997 as a birthday present but I didn't listen to it at the time(or maybe just once). I remember getting vapor trails and listening to it only once before selling it. I gradually got back into them more after snakes and arrows(the first tour I saw for them sinc 1987), I'm still a fan and always will be but I've moved on to other stuff now as well especially since the band are no longer together.
  13. Unless I'm thinking of someone else I remember you saying on here you were a huge Yes fan and being how Genesis were similar and often compared to Yes I'm surprised to hear you say you never heard an album by them and also prefer Chicago. I would suggest checking out the full albums of 70's Genesis or at least some of the PG ones if you get a chance. If you don't like the vocals then I can understand that and you can forget I mentioned it. Lol.
  14. I'm not against them going up against each other but they were two very different bands for the most part. I voted for Genesis.
  15. Vital Signs would probably fit right in on signals. Other than that I can't think of that many.
  16. The main guitar riff is cool but other than vital signs it's probably my least favorite on MP. I just find it kind of meh. I admit the lyrics are very good though. who in gods name says Vital Signs is meh? We all have our own opinions. I'm sure there's Rush songs you aren't crazy about that I like. Anyway, I was referring to red barchetta not vital signs. I didn't say anything about vital signs other than it being my least favorite on the album.
  17. They're not overrated, they're overplayed. Bohemian Rhapsody is a brilliant piece of songwriting, but I'll put a bullet in my skull if I have to listen to it one more time. Same thing. To me overplayed makes them overrated. When you hear something so much you get tired of it and so you lose respect for it. Maybe that's not fair but that's the way it is(for me anyway).
  18. I was able to procure a used copy of this for a little over 9 dollars on amazon. The disc is clean looking and plays well. It's a little rough around the edges but not a big deal to me. Anyway, I'm almost done with my first listen of this. It's no hemispheres or moving pictures but it's really not bad either. Matt Cameron does a good job on drums(he's no Neil but who was?)and Ben Mink seems to provide some good guitar. Geddy's bass sounds really good too.
  19. The main guitar riff is cool but other than vital signs it's probably my least favorite on MP. I just find it kind of meh. I admit the lyrics are very good though.
  20. Tom Sawyer but I still like it a lot. I also think red barchetta and spirit of radio are overrated. So is limelight. All are still good just played to death on the radio.
  21. I already answered the who is return to forever. See above. I'll add a bit more though. They were a fusion band who started out more in the jazz direction before becoming pure fusion. The classic lineup featured Stanley Clarke(bass), Lenny White(drums), Chick Corea(keyboards) and Al Di Meola(guitar).
  22. Who is RTF? I suppose KC is King Crimson? I have to disagree with your statement that Peart is the best drummer ever because they are/were a few jazz guys who could easily beat him anytime, Buddy Rich being the most notable of them. Also it's debatable whether Geddy is the best bassist, because The Ox (and Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Les Claypool, Chris Squire) exists. And how can you be sure Rush are superior/more talented musicians than e.g. Yes (such a strong quartet Howe + Wakeman + Bruford + Squire)? I didn't read the entire thread but RTF is probably Return to Forever who were a jazz fusion band from the 70's. They reappeared in the 2000's which is when I saw them live. Great band. Yeah, KC is probably King Crimson and were also great musicians. To this list I would add Mahavishnu Orchestra. I don't think there has ever been any better musicians than them(like RTF also jazz fusion)but that's just my opinion. I'm a huge Yes fan and for a long time they were my favorite band. Comparing them to Rush isn't really fair but if I had to choose I think at their peak Yes were slightly better musicians. When Bill Bruford left they became slightly less good because Alan White wasn't as good as Bill Bruford but they still made some great music. Gentle Giant were another band who had top notch musicians but I doubt many people on this page reading this have any idea who they were. They were another underrated prog rock band from the seventies. After King crimson they are the most well known(or one of them at least)of the lesser knowns. Gentle Giant are well known to my ears! :) Well, a lot of prog rock fans are Rush fans but not all Rush fans are big prog fans. ;)
