  1. OMG, ALL of Red Sector A. It's so sad that I can only listen to it once in a while. Songs that make me not necessarily sad, but misty-eyed: Bravado, plus the end of The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Xanadu, Hemispheres, The Body Electric, and the A Show of Hands version of Marathon. Teary-eyed in a good way: Rivendell, Madrigal, Closer To The Heart, and Second Nature. Others have already been mentioned. Yep, I'm a sap Deal with it
  2. First song up today was By-Tor: the first of the Rush "epics" that told a story. While the guitar that sounds like a dog's growls is cool, the instrumental section goes on a tad too long for my taste. That Alex solo at the end of it is killer, though. Fly By Night was next, and brings back memories of growing up with Rush since my early childhood. Making Memories and Rivendell introduce the band's first couple acoustic pieces, which add variety that I enjoy. When I listen to Making Memories, I marvel at how the band is still smiling, being extended a welcome hand, having good days, and has a bright future, even though 40 years have gone by. Can you imagine going back in time to tell them they'd still be doing the same in their 60's? I feel thrilled that I finally became part of it myself. I know that Rivendell isn't a favorite of many, and some of you probably just can't get past the slow pace. Not much to be done there. For those of you who see it as too fantasy-laced, try doing what I do and putting the elf theme aside a bit, and imagine Rush is singing this to us. For me, it becomes very comforting - how can "Time will never touch you here in this enchanted place", "It feels so good to see the smiles of friends who never left your mind when you were far away", and "Yet you know I've had the feeling/ Standing with my senses reeling/This is the place to grow old till I reach my final day" not hit you straight in the heart? Dangit, I want to be at as many enchanted concerts as I can, and grow old with Rush! I can't be the only one getting teary-eyed here Oh, and Geddy's voice is gorgeous in this song.
  3. Seems like only yesterday
  4. You know we're havin' good days (still true)!
  5. I will soothe your primal fears
  6. QUOTE (presto123 @ May 21 2012, 09:55 PM) QUOTE (Bastille Dave @ May 21 2012, 09:47 PM) ^^^ I think the point of the thread was 70's hits, not obscure songs that didnt even crack the top 200 Is that why there are so many of those I don't recognize? Impressive knowledge on 70's songs by driventotheedge though. I'm sure there are plenty I know but not by title. I only recognize about 10 of that 1970 list. There were a lot of good disco hits but thankfully no one is mentioning too many of them. Nobody mentioned any Olivia Newton John yet? She was huge in that era. I actually know most of them, but we listen to a station at work that specializes in them and certain 80's songs (while others are omitted entirely). I hear them over and over and over. I bet you'd actually know more than you think if you went down the list on YouTube... One of my early favorite songs was Dust In The Wind by Kansas. Heard that one a lot back then. Didn't know what it was about and love it even more now that I do.
  7. I get to meet Geddy and Alex *goes back to daydreaming*
  8. I think it'll be interesting because it's not something you hear much these days (unless a lot of bands I don't follow are doing this, and I'm just clueless). I have a feeling I'll be doing a lot of reflecting on my own life when I hear it, which is always insightful.
  9. I haven't been a serious fan that long, so the Internet has always been part of my experience, but like many, I came to various sites expecting I'd be supported in my newfound love, and that hasn't always happened (and I don't think I was a righteous asshole then or now, but maybe I'm just arrogant and don't see it). I didn't think I'd have to defend myself to the band's own fans. Oh well, taking crap is still better than having no one to talk to!
  10. Finished up Working Man from Rush and got up through Beneath, Between, and Behind on Fly By Night. Neil's more complex drumming is noticeable right away, though a lot of the sound of the debut remains. The relationship songs are gone, though, and while Best I Can still talks about the rock world, Anthem introduces a wider theme of independence, and Beneath, Between, and Behind is a great commentary on the United States and its people that's even more accurate today than it was then. I think its meaning was lost on me at first, and it's why this song has grown on me a lot - the "that is SO true" factor. The fact that we can't easily admit that there's anything wrong with us (or right with anyone else) is a very BIG thing that's wrong with us. This will be revisited in songs like Territories later on, but I better stop visiting it now before I get too political
  11. Resist, because I missed the acoustic version, and I'd love to hear it.
  12. Prime Mover, because I think it would be better live than Open Secrets. Of course, what I'd really love is Second Nature, but I'm not even getting my hopes up.
  13. Even though Emotion Detector is my second favorite Rush song and Middletown Dreams my fourth, I'm picking Middletown Dreams because I think it would work better/be more powerful live.
  14. I had some boredom at work, so I made a quick stab at my top 75. I realized just now that I forgot about the three songs from Clockwork Angels, so consider my list to only go up to and include Snakes & Arrows. This is roughly the order, though I got a bit lazy/sloppy at the end: Marathon Emotion Detector Bravado Middletown Dreams Between The Wheels The Weapon Subdivisions The Analog Kid Prime Mover Cut To The Chase The Spirit of Radio We Hold On Open Secrets The Fountain of Lamneth Kid Gloves Far Cry Witch Hunt Second Nature Mystic Rhythms Face Up Ghost of A Chance Presto Available Light Chemistry Madrigal The Body Electric Time Stand Still Leave That Thing Alone Chain Lightning Distant Early Warning Lock And Key Dreamline Resist The Enemy Within Turn The Page Mission Limelight Freewill Tom Sawyer Scars Closer To The Heart Neurotica Entre Nous Stick It Out Red Tide Grand Designs Making Memories A Farewell To Kings Cold Fire Between Sun & Moon Different Strings The Necromancer Here Again Countdown Vital Signs The Camera Eye Xanadu Natural Science 2112 Cygnus X-1 Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres Territories Half The World The Larger Bowl Spindrift One Little Victory Something For Nothing Fly By Night The Speed Of Love Double Agent Beneath, Between, and Behind Tears Cinderella Man War Paint The Way The Wind Blows
  15. Listened to What You're Doing, In The Mood, and Before and After today. I love that beginning of B & A. I'm also struck by the already great sound of each guy's playing. Oh, the places they'll go.
  16. QUOTE (vitalsigns318 @ May 22 2012, 11:41 AM) We will be easy to recognize because we are bringing our dragon, Nebby, that we created. He is based on the Rush r30 party t-shirt and writes reviews of the shows. Ah yes, I remember now! I'll be on the lookout for you all and try to say hi!
  17. I think I'm...I'm going bald!
  18. There's a time for livin' as high as we can
  19. To find out what they had lost...
