Yes you're right. I was on my phone and got it backwards. Thanks.

Do you remember the thread so I can go refresh my memory?

There have been so many rants here, I can't keep all of them straight.

He will. I have faith in the lad. I am still waiting for his reviews of their early works.... :)

Here - I copied it to put here:

Sigh.........so i've done it. 3 days.....4 eras done....70's 80's 90's 00's

Those of you who enjoy later period Rush.....disclaimer.....this will be brutally honest.

First thing i will say about this era......RTB Through CA.......it was a chore. And i in no way believe music should feel that way. You see 70's and 80's i basically had a smile on my face the whole way. You know a band in their prime just killing these records. Granted their were some patchy moments. but hey no one's perfect. The later era i found myself glancing at itunes more thinking gee how long is this song. The joy of the previous 2 decades......just gone.

and part of the problem. Rush simply forgot two things

1. How to make a good sounding record.....save for CP and Snakes.

2. Trimming the fat. The later records are to long. This a critizism for me of any act.....give me 45-50 mins i'm good. over that you loose me. You beter have strong matieral if your going over and hour.

2 things about Neil i'll say. His drum style became a lot less thrilling. and his lyrics dipped BIG TIME. This era has some of the worst lyrics i've ever heard, cringe worthy.

As for the albums themselves. RTB Has slipped down majorly to me. And that happened because i payed attention to the lyrics, lol

CP is a goofy record....i don't mean goofy as in fun. Goofy as in what the hell are you doing to your legacy. Save for 4 tracks.

Animate

Stick it Out

Cut to the Chase

Leave that Thing Alone.

T4E never should have been released. the records over i can't tell you how one track goes. Save for Resist. Ditto VT. Sorry to my friend Segue.......but VT is ass cheese.

Snakes was the only album in this bunch i truly enjoyed. I know i'm in the minority.....but nothing new there.

CA still continues to baffle me 2 years on. Why this gets cast in a golden light is a mystery. Sound is awful......but putting that aside. What is here that's classic? For my money it's

Headlong Flight

CA

and maybe the Anarchist.

The rest is OK to filler. Yes the Garden is now just OK.

So wrapping this rant/review up. Listening to this era together does it no favors. When this stuff is on after Rush's boom period......yes they lost it big time folks. That does not diminish my love for the band, lol. I'm not a troll or a Debby downer this is just what was in my heart. If you disagree with all of this. Fine. Enjoy. I'm glad you Enjoy.

Long live Rush.

Mick

VT is ass cheese. :laughing guy:

Mick, you ought to copyright that. :laughing guy:

80s most definitely. The 90s was kind of a decline into synth pop rock.

With barely any synth....how many synths are on Counterparts and Test for Echo?

Wouldn't the 80's be more "synth" pop rock?

I think presto and roll the bones count as synth pop rock, or adult contemporary or something like that. :D

power windows and HYF are synth pop :P

Can I dare ask your age? I'm not trying to come off as judgemental at all I'm just curious. Like anything else I find that age, when regarding Rush, has a lot to do with the material you most relate to and identify with as being "classic".

I for one consider "Mission" to be a pretty classic track. That statement would probably get me killed in some circles.

Classify the music with whatever man made label you need to. Does that really make it good or not? It's the same thing with "hair metal" or "glam rock". Because those two labels exist, does that mean none of that music was any good?

Given how much I adore Counterparts, it's very hard to choose an era.

The 80's were so experimental for rush, in completely different ways than the 70's. To me, the 80's were about orchestration, whereas the 70's were about composition and thematic development. The 90's signaled the tempt to combine the two periods with a retun to the rock power trio sound. The concise songs, the intricacy of each line.

I feel that T4E is one of Rush's weakest CDs. It is very hit and miss. Terms of song quality, as is Roll the Bones. With the exceptions of Speed of Love and Everyday Glory, Counterparts is a masterpiece. Is that enough to make me vote for the 90's phase? When forced to choose one cd from these two eras, I'd take Counterpatrts and run. But if forced to choose an era, I'd take the 80's and just listen to Counterparts in my head

Which era do you believe is better just by your own personal standpoint?

Me, definitely 80s. And By 80s, I mean Permanent Waves to Hold Your Fire. Some of Rush's best songs came out of that era.

BTW, MY 100th POST!!!

Presto was also made during the 80s.... Why don't you count that album?

Ignoring the silliness of adding PeW to the 80s, you are comparing 7 albums vs. 3. If it weren't for Counterparts, pound for pound it would be easy to take the 90s over the MP-HYF. With Counterparts, it's probably a wash, with the 80s edging it out because of higher highs, despite the lows of GuP-HYF.
