327. Drama - Yes (New_World_Man)

Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman had left the band after Tormato and before the lineup that recorded "drama" was released. However, even though those two are very talented, Yes was able to recoup with two members from the Buggles and record this great album that has strong musicianship and great tunes a few of which are mini epics. This seems to be a mixed bag for some folks but I think it's a very strong album and one of their last really great albums at least as far as prog sounding stuff is concerned. A big thumbs up from me.

Not a fan at all here but of course we all have our own opinions. I gave it a few listens and thought it was terrible to be honest but alot of folks think Tormato is terrible too so there ya go... :)

Well to each their own. I think Jon Anderson is a great singer and to me he will always be the voice of Yes but on that one he really isn't missed. I'm kind of surprised you don't like that one since you seem to like a lot of "heavy" stuff and that was imo by far their heaviest sounding album up to that point. Oh well. Different strokes as they say. I remember when I first put it on my brother thought it sounded like Led Zeppelin. Lol.

I love Drama and it was going to be one of my next choices

Machine Messiah is a monster of a song

UFOs second album since Schenker's departure, and it is brilliant ( ... and this coming from a huge Michael Schenker fan ) ... The title track is amazing, and Paul Chapman's guitar to close out "Profession Of Violence" is all-time great

338. Dark Passion Play- Nightwish (Segue Myles)

I have come to the conclusion that the way many of the older ones here love Yes or Tull, I love Nightwish with that same level of admiration. They were the band that first led me towards prog, with their longer songs always casting the right sort of spell!

This was my first album of theirs (not counting a few songs here and their prior to actually buying this). Until the release of Endless Forms Most Beautiful-, this was my favourite album of theirs. Now it is a close (but not as close as I would have expected) second.

340. Fire of Unknown Origin - Blue Oyster Cult (New_World_Man)

A very solid album of sci fi, cult, mystery and horror themed hard synth rock. This album has an other worldly sound not too far removed from Rush's output from the same time period. "Heavy metal:black and silver)" wouldn't sound too out of place on Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" album. The song "veteran of psychic wars" was part of the "heavy metal" soundtrack and "burning for you" was the radio hit but there are no weak songs here. A very strong album from start to finish.

Segue, where do you rate Tarja Turunen ?

Quite honestly, I think Nightwise kind of died after she left

I adore her. Absolutely, but for me the bands heart is Tuomas. As long as he keeps writing what he writes, I will be on cloud nine!

Quite frankly, I like the evolution of this band. I felt that Once really suffered from Tarja's vocals. The music was evolving into something more accessible, and so often on that album, her classically trained approach suffered.

Annette was great on the next two albums, but the songwriting is what makes DPP so precious! I have a lot of the male vocal only demo's, and all the bonus tracks, and it was a really wonderful period.

Tarja is still a great singer, and I am always curious about how the last three albums could have turned out with her still in the band (I am sadly not that into her solo work, bar the first album My Winter Storm).

I might state that Once is my least favourite Nightwish album, but in the grand scheme of things, it is, like all their albums, in my top fifty. I absolutely adore Nightwish, but my gaze has always been firmly on Tuomas Holopainen, his music, his lyrics and his vision. That is what keeps me coming back and being enthralled.

Plus, I also love Marco Hietela, and he has been a stable member since Century Child. He really adds to my love of this band, his work on Dark Passion Play being a huge part of why I love it so much!

Hey, I thought you only listen to music that is in your box? ;) Nice to see you are willing to try someone else's suggestion. :)

Well heck its UFO and they were only a couple years past their best years so I would give it a listen. To be honest I can hardly remember what No Place To Run even sounds like. Once I heard Strangers In The Night everything else paled in comparison anyway...

Uriah Heep (other than my pick)

Spock's Beard

Flower Kings

The Church

XTC

Jellyfish

Television (marquee moon)

B 52's

More Dream Theater (I think so far only one album made the list)

Ayreon

Mountain

Thin Lizzy (there might be one on here not sure)
