Timing from 3/15 - 5/08

I am curious as to the timing if the whole production from today moving forward to Show 1. I understand that they currently are rehearsing and preparing individually, communicating from afar about various setlist options and progressions. I also read that they will get together in April (I assuming the beginning of) and start rehearsing together.

However, this is a bigger production than just the three of them. There are lights, videos, and background music that have to be choreographed and synced together the form a seemless production. When does all that happen?

At some point, the setlist has to set in stone so that these additional parts of the production can be fine tuned. How long does that take? A week? Two? A month?

For those of you with some experience in the industry, can you lay out a hypothetical timeline from 3/15 through 5/8? Thank you in advance.

I would love top see a Documentary on THIS part of the tour.

What videos will be added. lights, breaks, songs..etc.

As someone who is a part of a building process in my occupation, it fascinates me.

I mean who does not want to see the debate amongst the guys of 'Natural Science vs. Xanadu' .

I've always thought it'd be great if they did a mini-doc just on coming up with the setlist for a tour. Film their initial conversations tossing around song options, listening back to the older albums together with commentary, rehearsal footage of songs they later decided not to play, and ultimately working out the final song order and light/video packages to go with them. Would make a fantastic DVD extra!

Also, I wish we could eventually see some of these emails they're sending back and forth whittling down from a 5-hour setlist! It's one thing to read theoretical set lists that fans post here, but imagine if we could see the sets the guys themselves are actually proposing to each other. The fanboy in me really finds that notion fascinating. :)

Thanks! Been lurking for a bit. First saw the band on the Power Windows tour in 86, but was still kinda just a casual fan until around the time Counterparts came out. Then something clicked and I've been following them consistently and only missed the R30 tour since.

Even though the thought of Rush possibly calling it a day soon is sad, I'm excited to see what they come up with for this tour and felt inspired to join the conversations.

Awesome. We have more than our share of Texans around here. My Uncle lives in Austin and my parents and Aunt in Lufkin. My Uncle lives on Barton Creek and I had the pleasure of playing there some 20 years ago. Been to the great state many times and have always enjoyed it there. Hope you decide to hang around here with us for a while... :)

From what was revealed on previous tours, the rehearsal process is the weeding out of songs that aren't working or aren't lighting their fire. they probably go into it with 4 or 5 hours worth of possible material and weed it out from there. I think Jacob's Ladder was cut during the rehearsals on a previous tour because it wasn't working. As complicated as some of their material is, going back to something you haven't played in years can a challenge to get tight.

Outside of the set list process, the rest of the process really doesn't interest me. They hire professionals and it justs get done, probably without much drama.

There is no either/or. :)

When You need to narrow it down to 3 hours, choices will have to be made.

Songs will be voted off.

A reality show! That could be the opening video - a mock reality show of different characters from different albums being voted off. Hey - if Perry can have dancing sharks at the Super Bowl, we can get a sourpussed owl getting rejected from the stage.

I wouldn't be too heartbroken if they leave Superconductor off the set list. :D

Like what? I doubt they'll ever do Tai Shan. Red Tide is another one I could do without.

I actually like Red Tide but I don't want to hear anything recorded after 1985 if I had a choice. What I mean is I would take anything pre 85' over something post 85'. I of course am referring to the great stuff pre 85' and there is plenty to fill up 3 hrs. Won't happen obviously...

I think this time period with them would be a cool "bonus" disc for the next DVD! Each of them doing their "warm up" for rehearsals....copies of their emails tossing what to play/not to play back and forth, as well as a dinner or two with them (and a lot of wine) discussing it!

Then the pre-practice "let's at least TRY these before we decide" rehearsals....

And the rehearsals!

I think you could get some decent stuff, and at LEAST about 4-5 hours worth of interesting footage!

This isn't their first rodeo. I'm sure they have got this touring thing down to a science by now.

True...but they go over set lists each time... I'm sure since this is an "in between album" tour, they'll have to think about it!

What would be fun too would be if they each took a time behind the camera and videotaped stuff.

Anything pre-'85? I wish that so much of it wasn't out of Geddys range now.

Allan and Howard both have the full rehearsal list and are preparing production for all the songs that *might* make the tour.

The setlist itself wont be finalized until the last week (if not the last day) before the tour starts.

Allan is dealing with all the video crap... Howard is taking care of the full light and stage production (actually, by this time Howard has already designed the full lighting rig and all the major parts of the staging).
