What's the deal with Alex not being rated high enough?

Recommended Posts

38. Buckethead

39. Jeff Beck

40. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones)

41. Michael Schenker

42. Carlos Santana

43. Yngwie Malmsteen

ANY list that has Buckethead ahead of these 5 legends behind him needs to be thrown in the trash.

Set on Fire.

Dumped into the trash truck

Driven into the Grand Canyon.

Strapped to Nuclear Warhead

and Launched toward the sun!!

Lifeson ranked #3 in Guitar World's Readers' Poll.

Half a million votes. But I guess that counts for nothing compared to when ONE Rolling Stone wanker editor makes his own list, huh?

The list might suck.... no Steve Howe... no Andy Latimer... no Robert Fripp.... but it had HALF A MILLION VOTERS. I guess that counts for something. Eat that.

Because he's Alex: being a great guitarist in a great band is enough for him and for us all.

Or would you prefer him wearing leopard spandex etc on stage or talking about cheap 'philosophy' on TV and press, like all the rockstars that see themselves as the new Gandhi or Voltaire?

Best answer ever: because he's Alex

This humble canadian is saying "look at us" with his playing whereas so many other guitarists say "look at ME!"

Hendrix should be number one on any guitar list IMO. ...Lifeson can be number two ;)

it's been said but I'll say it in a different way...rush fans and rush themselves realized it was BS to try to be in the 'cool kids' club a long time ago.

I was one of those "miscellaneous" kids in school!

I was basically the kid in the Subdivisions video but I'd probably never admit it if it weren't for Rush.. (That just occurred to me. Kinda cool:))

Because Lifeson never really redefined his instrument. What he plays creates and reinforces the sound of the band he plays in, and he's also mastered the solo guitarist balancing act of rhythm and solo in much the same way Andy Summers or Eric Clapton or Thomas Delong have, but I wouldn't rank him with the musicians who've made us look at the guitar differently.

Im thinking of 2 reasons

1. Because Geddy plays 3 instruments at the same time, and Neil is one of the best drummers (if not the best) ever. And Alex only plays the guitar, so he isnt really recognized.

2. In the late 80s when they were most popular, Alex started being "less" important because the synths took over most of that period

Recently I was listening to the isolated bass and drum tracks for Digital Man, and to me it shows perfectly how important Alex actually is. Compare to isolated version to the version with Alex and it's amazing how much his guitar adds.

It's like night and day. Love that song btw.
