Listen to Operation: Mindcrime. Have you???

@Led

another great one, but the lack of metal besides metallica tells me it's not his cup of tea

I almost put Kill 'Em All on because of it's importance, but I just don't go back to listen to that one as much as Justice. Also, a lot of the metal doesn't have the depth on the album or the influence on other artists to be on the list. What would you suggest.

@Goose...Add it Up was a huge go-to album for me when it came out and for a few years after, but I don't include greatest hits and the singular albums just weren't deep enough for me, no matter how much I like them.

The debut is killer, beginning to end.

Maybe I'll pick up the 20th anniversary version if I can get it on the cheap.

I used to have the original vinyl, but gave it to a student. That's where most of my cool albums went over the years...to the weird kids sitting alone in the halls.

My people.

How cool are you? That's really awesome...and I bet had a big impact.

Nowadays, I'd imagine you'd get fired for promoting sexist pornography or some shit.

Actually, yesterday I handed a kid my CD copy of Dark Side of the Moon. I noticed he'd been wearing the shirt.

Fire me.

I don't remember that album having a song lamenting the fact that the singer can only get one f**k.

if you like black sabbath, check out saint vitus or pentagram. poor production but its heavy ass doom metal with clean vocals and good playing. vitus are pretty sloppy but they make a lot of noise

If you recommend an album from each, I'll check them out. But remember that I don't go harder than early metallica, and I generally appreciate some amount of accessibility to the music.

these guys are heavier than metallica but in a different way than say, cannibal corpse or some shit. clean vocals, catchy riffs and all. plus they have more of a 70s sound - they both started in the 70s but didnt put out records til the 80s

pentagram's day of reckoning and born too late by vitus are the best, imo. really shitty production, which you might not dig, but it fits.

people will suck up anything thats thrown at them, radio plays what they want you to hear...

I thought that radio died in the 90s. All I hear now on the radio (music wise) is:

1. pop stations rotating 40 "current" pop songs with a sprinkling of pop songs from the 80s and 90s;

2. classic rock stations playing the same few hundred songs from 1967-1975, a sprinkling of rock from 1976-on, with a few new rock releases from bans from the time...but those songs only get played for a week and then disappear forever.

3. country

There's probably R&B and rap stations, but not where I live, and I suspect they fall into either the format of 1 or 2 above.

The good news is that with satellite/internet radio, you have more access to more music than you've ever had. The bad news is that there are very few songs that a generation can share anymore. Part of this is the fragmentation of the market (which has very positive effects), but part of it is also the "if it's popular it sucks" attitude that permeates much of this forum.

I love Sirius XM, which I listen to a lot.

Because some people don't like Dave Matthews or Counting Crows they don't like anything popular? Whatever...

For the record I like the following "popular" bands (some more than others of course):

Alice in Chains

Soundgarden

Green Day

Beck

The Smashing Pumpkins

Foo Fighters

Rage Against the Machine

Radiohead

Massive Attack

Nine Inch Nails

Tool

A Perfect Circle

Megadeth

Def Leppard

Van Halen

Pantera

REM

Grow the f**k up...you're not the center of the world or the focus of everyone's thoughts.

And if someone acts like a childish asshole, that person should have thick skin.

What the f*ck is your problem?

You're just as guilty of drawing out those pointless and inane arguments with me as I am.

This is not uncommon and of course not just true of this forum as you know. Back in the mid to late 70's all my "Rush/Prog" friends and I didn't like anything popular at the time just because it was popular and all over the FM dial. Back then Eagles, Boston, Styx, Foreigner etc were no no's amongst us silly as it was..... :|

Yeah, that was exactly my point. That attitude we see here is (and probably always has) existed in the larger world. With a very fragmented musical marketplace, the attitude makes it that much more difficult for a generation now to have a shared song.

I wonder what the big shared songs of the last 10 years would even be...

Rush is a pretty "popular" band....

These days, yes, largely thanks to games like Rock Band which exposed them to younger listeners. But in the 70's... no

But that's irrelevant now.

- Led, why does your skin seem so thin today?

You're resorting to "childish" personal attacks. What were you saying again?

Under the table & Dreaming, Crash and Before these Crowded Streets are fantastic albums.

Live albums from the 90's = all great.

And if you don't appreciate this version of Dylan classic you must be deaf. :D

Big credit to Santana though. ;)

Last three DMB studio albums have been really weak though.

Wait. This is 2015 and the "who's better, who's best" shit is still being tossed around like we're a bunch of college sophomores desperate to affirm our musical identity? sweet jesus.

Dave Matthews Band are consummate musicians. They busted their asses; they do what they do very well; they've influenced scores of other musicians.

Rush are consummate musicians. They busted their asses; they do what they do very well; they've influenced scores of other musicians.

Idk; when someone starts saying this musician is better than this musician, I lose interest. Who gives a shit? I mean, I'll never be into DMB with any degree of fervor, but I can certainly appreciate their song-writing skills, their musicianship, and their ability to reach an audience, no matter who that audience might be.

You know, Dave Matthews is a fantastic gtr player.

That being said, I really do not like his music. I am intrigued by how he continues to be a draw on the jam band/college kid circuit even though DMB is as much of a jam band as the Carpenters were. Every time e he starts to yodel and twitch, I turn the dial or leave the room. Also, I found myself at a DMB concert with an ex (not the reason she became my ex) and it was very boring.
