Given that Neil is above doing the odd meet n greet, I would be quite interested to know if there are any forum members who have met him, their opinions of him (obviously selective, given that one would probably only have met him for a moment or two), and how it came to pass that they met this most reclusive of musicians.

Aside from meets & greets, the only "famous" musician I ever met was Jordan Rudess on the streets of Pamplona, hours before a Dream Theater show. He was very outgoing, and we chatted for a while,

I met him in 91 at The Ritz in NYC. It was the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert. I was able to get in the venue in the afternoon. Saw all the soundchecks. Met all the drummers and got their autographs on a paper plate. Neil was the first one I approached. I didn't know that he didn't like people coming up to him. I was starstruck. I asked him to sign my shirt because I had nothing to autograph. He said he doesn't sign body parts. So I grabbed a paper plate from the buffet line and he signed Hello Chris - Neil Peart right in the middle. Also had a pic taken with him. He didn't act bothered, but wasn't terribly outgoing either. He sort of smiled. lol

 

The other drummers were great. All more than happy to sign and talk a little. Great time.

Not quite. He was quite close to eating Mosbach's knuckle sandwich...

I don't care to either, love his drumming and all, but i know a few people who have the chance of meeting him and claim he's very rude. I understand his shyness excuse, but come on, have a little respect. I heard somewhere that bono said he knows fans can be goofy and all, but they are who made him rich and hes very thankful for that.

Neil says pretty much the same thing—he's grateful for his fans, because without them he wouldn't be where he is in life. He just doesn't understand the obsession they have with him.

Not quite. He was quite close to eating Mosbach's knuckle sandwich...

 

He felt entitled to be treated like a fellow percussionist and was dumbfounded when praetorian told him to step off. He created quite a scene and started threads crying like a baby anywhere he could. One was here. We played with him for a while then he left.

I dream about Neil a lot, but I guess dreams don't count here.

 

I read in another thread that you fall asleep as soon as hubby walks in the door.. The pieces are starting to fit together Lorraine ;)

hope he doesn't come on here lol

If I ever saw Neil on the street, I'd just ignore him. He doesn't want to give his fans the time of day, why should I give him mine?

I'd run full speed at him screaming for an autograph.. Especially if it was right before a show. He plays better when he's angry :)

No I haven't. But if I ever saw him in public and I wasn't wearing a Rush shirt I'd probably just stare in awe from afar. I wouldn't even talk to him or take a picture of him. I'd like to give him the respect and privacy that he deserves.

I ran in to him one morning at a gas station many years ago. I was filling up my truck and noticed a couple of motorcycles next to me that looked familiar. It registered to me who the bikes belonged to just about the time Neil and a companion walked up. I looked directly at him - I am pretty sure with a goofy grin on my face - and he could tell I knew who he was. I could tell from the look on his face he was wondering how this would go.

 

I knew the next tour location they were headed to and gathered my wits. All I did was politely give them a suggestion about a scenic route to take that would avoid some construction issues they might not have been aware of on the route I figured they would probably have planned. Neil looked at his companion. The companion shrugged his shoulders and nodded. Neil looked at me and said "thanks." I said "No problem. Ride safe." as I was finishing filling up the truck. Neil and his companion were then packing their stuff and getting on their bikes when he looked at me and said, "And, hey, thanks."

 

I have always thought it was nice of him to acknowledge his appreciating me not completely wigging out or being a goofball. Granted, 16 year old me probably would have.... but older me figured I should play it cool. :cool:

 

Of course, after they rode off, I called everyone I knew who cared. Keep in mind this was back in the day when cell phone minutes were still a precious commodity... but I didn't care. I did not play that nearly as cool. :o

If you approach a dentist on a motorcycle, you will get a conversation if you ask about his bike. You will get someone trying desperately trying to get out of the situation if you tell him about your toothache. How is this not obvious to everyone?
