Not an entire album. Honestly Hemispheres comes closest (and not just for LVS), but not close enough.

Rush/Half of Fly By Night: Hard Rock/Blues Rock

Other half of FBN - present: Progressive Hard Rock

PoW and HYF: Not exactly hard rock no matter how much I like them

Presto and RTB: Decidedly un-progressive. Or hard.

While Presto and RTB aren't really hard, they are still progressive IMO. They are very pop oriented, but pop can't get much more progressive than Dreamline, War Paint, and Available Light Edited by Geddy's Soul Patch

You're right about those songs. However, just like I didn't list Hemispheres as jazz just for La Villa and parts of the title track, I don't think you can label the whole album prog just for those songs. I like Scars, but it's not exactly progressive...

In my opinion, it's all just rock. With exception to the first album, Rush music has always been "complex". It seems that the more music technology advanced, the more complex their music became. The "little things" you hear in Rush music always amazes me. I'm always wondering "how did they think to put THAT there"

I say like this:

Rush - Hard Rock

Fly By Night - Prog Rock

Caress Of Steel - Prog Rock

2112 - Prog Rock

A Farewell To Kings - Prog Rock

Hemispheres - Prog Rock

Permanent Waves - Prog Rock

Moving Pictures - Prog Rock

Signals - synth rock

Grace Under Pressure - synth rock

Power Windows - synth rock

Hold Your Fire - synth rock

Presto - Rock

Roll The Bones - Rock

Counterparts - Rock

Test For Echo - Rock

Vapor Trails - Hard Rock

Snakes & Arrows - Hard Rock

Clockwork Angels - Hard Rock

Moving pictures has a fair bit of synth in it. I would definately place that in the synth rock rather than prog rock.

Permenant waves is the transition album.

Having a "fair amount of synth" doesn't make it synth rock. MP is definitely a prog rock album

This kind of thing is why I listed multiple genres...

And honestly I thing PeW and MP had more new wave influence than synth rock influence. Minus the keyboard solo in JL, the intro to The Camera Eye and the bridge in YYZ there's really nowhere on either album where the synths "take control"...

Edit: And the whole atmospheric intro to Witch Hunt.

I agree with Zumbi's list, except for Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, I don't think those are really proggy.

:eh:

See Freewill, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science, YYZ, and The Camera Eye. Also most of the others' solos.

i see those songs as their "fading out of the really proggy stuff" era..if that makes sense....

They stopped epics after Hemispheres. But they remained prog at least until signals. then they dropped it. They kinda came back to it recently though. In my eyes anyway.

I've been thinking about it, maybe thy weren't always prog. But since FBN I think they have been a combination of prog rock/art rock/art pop
