Digital Man
QUOTE (GhostGirl @ Jun 13 2008, 09:39 PM) Today we went to the doctor, and things went pretty well. There are a few issues we need to follow up on, but we did get the Risperdal. I'll be giving him his first dose in a little while and I'm nervous. How is it going? Wanted to check in this morning to see how you guys are doing. (when I gave my daughter her med the effect was immediate, not sure if this one works the same way or not)

GhostGirl
Thanks, Digi and owlswing. Well, we gave him the Risperdal at 9 last night, which is what the dr. said to do. I also gave him his normal dose of Clonidine, which helps him fall asleep. He calmed down and was asleep before 10. It's hard to say if it was the Risp. or just the fact that he was exhausted from getting up at 3 yesterday morning. We'll see how he behaves today...one thing we may have to play around with is the dosage, and our pediatrician is referring us to a psychiatrist who can more accurately work on dosage and/or using other meds. if this doesn't do the trick. Thanks to everyone for the PMs and the support. You guys are simply the best.

GhostGirl
Thanks, guys. Well, he seemed kind of groggy when he got up, so at first we were thinking he had too much. But he was on the computer just now and things were moving too slowly for him, and he had a meltdown. Screaming, banging his hands on the desk, crying... So I dunno... Screaming, banging his hands on the desk, crying... So I dunno... Give the medication time to adapt. I know it's hard to be patient, but anyone needs time to adjust to taking any sort of medication, heck, even if it's just allergy meds. CeeJ
Sometimes it can take weeks to get a dosage correct. There are going to be days, in the beginning, that you are going to wonder if the medication is making him sleepy or if it is even working. Until the medication has a chance to get into his system, you won't know. GG... When I think of all that you do for Stephen and the rest of your family I wonder if I would be able to be as strong and courageous as you are. You do a wonderful job as a mother. I know that there are times that you get frustrated and don't know if what you are doing is the right thing. WE ALL DO. Make sure to tell yourself daily that... 1. YOU ARE A WONDERFUL PERSON. 2. YOU ARE A GREAT MOM. 3. YOU DESERVE SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF. I hope that you know that we are all behind you 150%.

GhostGirl
Update on the Risperdal... Things seem to be settling down - he's taking the meds at night with no problem. He is still having a few episodes of frustration but they are much less intense, and he's sleeping much better. I'm very pleased so far.

GhostGirl
QUOTE (EveryNerveAware @ Jun 25 2008, 08:38 AM) Autistic toddler kicked off airplane http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=...ocal&id=6223045 Oh, wow. I can totally identify with what this mom had going on. I can't imagine ever having to fly with Stephen. I have zero doubt that he would have a meltdown. This is a tough one. There ARE regulations for safety - seatbelts, stowing your bags, etc. but with kids like this? How do you manage all that? I can feel exactly what this woman was feeling - embarrassed, hurt, scared. I've felt it many times in stores or in doctors' offices. I can only guess at how it was magnified on a plane. My heart breaks for her and the little guy, who had to have been feeling absolutely freaked out - strangers yelling at him and touching his seatbelt. Angua
The way the airline seems to have handled this seems to be wrong. Surely common sense would have told them that getting angry with a toddler (autism or not) just makes the situation worse. Last time we flew, the airline promised us seats close to the bathroom, kids meals etc. Well we were close to some bathrooms - the ones in 1st class that the crew wouldn't let us use and they hadn't got kids meals etc. The most miserable 7 hours of my life. When I complained I received a letter promising a goody bags for the kids that never materialised. Airlines just want to make a quick buck. Sorry I'll stop ranting now. Cygnus The God Of Balance
Well, I've been out of town and out of touch for a couple of weeks and I can see that things have changed a lot in the GG house . I have always resisted the medicating of Tony. I'm proud that GG has the courage to do this with Stephen. Tony has meltdowns, but it's hard for me to tell if they are frequent enough or not to warrant the medication. He sleeps really well, and always has (thank God)! It's hard for me to tell if he's a candidate for Risperdal or not. I'll be interested to follow Stephen's progress with the medicine GG. I hope all is well with you and your family. Congratulations as always on your strength! (And happy belated birthday too )

GhostGirl
I think we need some adjustments...but we're going to have to wait on the children's behavioral specialist to schedule an appt. He is doing OKAY...sleeping much better, still a few meltdowns but most aren't long-lasting. Still a lot of room for improvement. And CGOB...I don't feel brave for trying this. Things had just gotten so bad we didn't feel we had a choice.
