Per Geddy's last interview (View 41st or 42nd Anniversary Concert Thread) Geddy mentioned that they would like not to always depend on Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of the Radio. Now let me be perfectly clear on this. Disclaimer: I think this would never and should never happen. I think Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Freewill, YYZ and 2112 O/T should always find there way onto any given Setlist. Its only 6 songs out of 26. I think there fine and an essential part of any RUSH concert.

Now that said, lets say we give Geddy his wish. What songs do you replace these great songs (Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Freewill, 2112 O/T and YYZ) with? Granted they must be post Moving Pictures and Songs that have been received as Hits or Essential Rush Songs. So what songs Post MP should they be? Here is my list:

Tom Sawyer: Caravan

The Spirit of Radio: Far Cry

Limelight: Subdivisions

Freewill: Headlong Flight

2112 O/T: Clockwork Angels

YYZ: Mal-Nar

I honestly think they could do fine without Tom Sawyer. But they should always leave TSOR on, as it is a real crowd pumper, Maybe do it first in the set to get it out of the way.

:Neil: Hey guys it's L2K hitting the TRF with some great ideas again. Wonder how he does it?

:Alex: He's probably "livin' la vida loca" as they say in Miami

:geddy: Is that the only spanish you learned in jail?

Tom Sawyer: Caravan

The Spirit of Radio: Double Agent

Limelight: Digital Man

Freewill: Headlong Flight

2112 O/T: Clockwork Angels

YYZ: TMMB

Leave it to the Duff-Man to pick two songs that weren't Listed. What do you think this is Anarchy? Where people can do what ever they like? Just cause its one of the choices doesn't mean you can just go Rogue like Sarah Palin!

The first thing I thought when I saw the thread title: what, a thread about scotch tape or glue or something?

I'm in two camps about this. Personally, I'd rather have the 'staples' (giggle) traded out for other songs, but I do understand that songs like 'Tom Sawyer' and 'The Spirit of Radio' are such crowd-pleasers - they really do bring forth an awesome energy, and for that alone they are worth it! :)

What I would trade, though...

Well, I picked:

The Anarchist (yarr!)

New World Man (jaunty!)

The Pass (deep!)

Secret Touch (this kills live!) and

Where's My Thing? (the live 1991-1992 version)

I thought this was another surgery related thread.

I just want "The Enemy Within" before I die. I don't care what it replaces.

First of all, how are Subdivisions, Far Cry, and Dreamline not staples?

****CONCERT SPOILERS****

Anyway, the problem with replacing staples is that the energy at the concerts really suffers. Just bringing Limelight in for song 5 of the first set helped immeasurably. I personally prefer TBE, but the crowd obviously responded better to Limelight. Also, while I prefer Manhattan Project, the crowd energy for Dreamline was far better.

****END SPOILERS****

Having said that, I'd love to hear these songs live:

The Necromancer

Hemispheres

Xanadu

Afterimage

Lakeside Park

However, given your list, I'll take the following:

Subdivisions replaces Subdivisions

RTB replaces Dreamline

T4E replaces Far Cry

Driven replaces BU2B

Ghost Rider replaces The Big Money

Mal Nar replaces YYZ

Tom Sawyer- I don't see it on there, I've looked 3 times (unless I'm just missing it each time lol), but I am ADDING Xanadu. Hands down, let me see it now. It doesn't even have to have vocals, FFS. Seriously.

2112- Between The Wheels

Limelight- Bravado

Freewill- The Wreckers

YYZ- Roll The Bones

My husband is singing random Rush lyrics at me now, he can't believe I forgot a Rush song title. He quizzes me, I swear.

Freewill isnt anymore of a staple than Red Barchetta, and probably played less than La Villa Strangiato, so why aren't these songs up there? Anyway, if Rush were to drop TS, TSOR, 2112, Limelight or YYZ it would be totally lame if they didn't replace them with other classic songs (MP and before). I'd love to hear any of these:

Anthem

Something For Nothing

A Farewell To Kings (I know Geddy can still sing this one)

Xanadu (at least they played this on R30)

Hemispheres (at least an abbreviated one!)

JACOBS LADDER (I'm pretty sure this will return for their NEXT & FINAL tour)

The Enemy Within (OK, not really 'classic' era—but bring this back!)

Participated in the poll, but not strongly latched on my five choices and instrumental.

I could replace many more with songs from the list, Last year's Angels tour with most of Clock Work and nice slice of S&A, Signals, Power Windows made one of the more interesting and refreshing Rush tours in years. However the lukewarm response( at least in my neck of the woods) majority don't like change and want to hear all of the staples.

Btw - When first reading post headline thought it was about Rush playing the Staples Center in L.A.

And who are going to sing them everynight damn night? David Lee Roth? He can barely sing Van Halen songs! The only possible songs there are Xanadu, Jacob's Ladder and The Enemy within!

You can't argue with Ghost Rider or TEW!

Oh you can argue! That's the least we can do! Hell people here argue on which toilet paper Alex prefers to use.

There was an interview earlier this year or last year when they were asked about Tom Sawyer being left off a setlist—Alex and Geddy smiled sheepishly and said something like: "Oh, no, we're Canadian.... and too polite for that."

It was obvious that they no longer feel the need to play it every show, but they also had a true appreciation for how it changed their career and launched them into to a whole new league of arena rock acts.

It's interesting to watch how Tom Sawyer is placed / presented from one tour to the next.

From Signals through GuP tours -- it was the #2 song right behind the opener TSOR -- RUSH was getting the audience really, really fired up about being at a RUSH show with back to back crowd pleasers.

Then, for GuP and PW it was moved to the end of the setlist as pre-encore closer or the first song of the encore.

HYF, Presto, RTB -- it was exclusively the pre-encore closer. That is an interesting spot. They wanted to conclude the regular set with a crowd pleaser. This was also an acknowledgment of the commercial importance of the song.

CP and TFE it was again a finale piece or part of the encore.

When the returned from the Hiatus Tom Sawyer was the opener for the first time. It was the perfect choice to open that tour IMO.

R30 - it opens the 2nd set then returns to the pre-encore spot for S&A.

Of course it opened the MP suite for the Time Machine tour, and now it's the first song of the encore.

I would say that that pre-encore spot or 1st song of encore over the years indicates the song is there as a crowd pleaser, something they feel obligated (in a good way) to do.
