Worst Tour for Classic Period Only Fans

Recommended Posts

My favorite RUSH period was from 1977 though 1989-90. This was when everything was NOT sampled. Geddy actually played the parts on the key's, Neil actually played REAL drum sets. They had the Taurus pedals onstage. Now it's push a trigger and put the show on AUTO PILOT. UGH!

At 7:29 of this clip, Geddy explains why he doesn't play the keyboard parts anymore:

http://youtu.be/wv_HuCLhBZs

I say, let him be with his man! :D

What Geddy has to realize is that what's sampled now does not translate as well live as the original instruments did back in the 80's. Listen to Marathon 2011 compared to Marathon 1988. Today's sounds are too processed. Believe me, I love seeing Geddy rock out on the Fender but don't sacrifice the Key's classic sound, i mean he is Geddy Lee after all!

I know what you mean about processed sounds, but I really liked Marathon 2011, and besides, I'm all for Geddy doing whatever makes him happy and makes him want to keep playing

Besides, if "he is Geddy Lee after all" isn't about the most compelling statement I've ever heard in favour of him playing the bass, I don't know what is!

As has been said by Neil in the Hold Your Fire Tourbook: Geddy has always considered himself a Bass player first, a Vocalist second, and a keyboard player a distant third.

Also, just for the record, playing an electronic drumkit on some songs does not constitute putting the show on auto pilot. On the contrary, it allows Neil to play even more than he otherwise could, with the ability to trigger samples that would normally be handled by other band members.

90% of the show is played on a "real" drum set anyway.

I've seen every tour since GuP and I can honestly say I've never been disappointed. I see setlists as an expression of Rush's mood at the time and that makes me feel a little closer to the band. I think, because the don't change up their set every night, you have to evaluate a tour/concert in much the same way you would evaluate an play or musical. How was it constructed? Did the songs flow together and make sense? Was lighting and pyro timed well? How did the drums sound? etc...

When I look at all of those things one tour keeps coming back and I know I'm going to get blasted for this...

R30

It was Rush's best Red Rocks performance by far. The opening was like a launching pad and I think the boys dialed-in to a more raw side of rush. There was humor on stage. There were some technical mistakes. But this tour was pure magic when all was said and done.

The only other 'manufactured' tour that I think comes close in my 30+ years of concert going was the Powerslave tour.

Personally, now (after really getting into the synth stuff) the only problem I have with the set is lack of classic material for first timers like myself. I would have preferred the first set to be synth material, then do the CA material and close the show with some classics. I think that if you didn't do your pre-gig homework like me and were only familiar with their early stuff then this show would be VERY disappointing.

Rayrushray would have said the show made his kids cry and that Rush should be performing in theaters.

The Spirit Of Radio

Tom Sawyer

2112/Overture/Temples/Grand Finale

The show you descibed with this "classic" ending seems to be pretty much exactly what this tour is? How much more classic can it get? Esp. for a first timer! I love most everything the band has recorded, and of course the early years, but I'm afraid By-Tor is a bygone man.

This tour totally sucked if you only liked 8 out of the 38 years that Rush has been active. Although, why in the world would you bother going to see a band in 2012 that you haven't liked since 1981? I really don't get those people's mindset.

that's one thing that pisses me off about this board...sometimes I wonder if people here even like rush

Well, as a "classic" fan, I have NEVER been let down by a Rush show. There has never been a bad show no matter what they play. I like to see these guys live every chance I get. I will say though that after "Permanent Waves," buying their albums went from "got to have it the day it comes out" to "if I like what I hear, I'll buy it." And therein lies the rub.

For some of us, Rush became what the radio played and therefore I was not familiar with each and every track of every album. So sure, if I did not own the album(I own Show of Hands but not Power Windows hence I was able to "get" the setlist), a set may be disappointing because the tunes weren't played on radio and they were somewhat out of left field for the "classic lovers." Ironically, I was so thrilled to hear the tune "Time Stand Still" on TMT and "Bravado" on the CA tour, tunes others here have dismissed, live for the very first time. Also note that a co-worker who didn't discover Rush until "Moving PIctures" HATED the CA show setlist so to think it is only the 70's lovers who weren't enamored with the setlist is incorrect.

Bottom line, Rush is like being married for a long time-like in those Cialis commericals, it is easy to grow a little distant a lot of the time but damn if the wife doesn't do something really sexy to make you want to jump on her right then and there or makes you laugh so hard you remember why you married her in the first place. It may not be perfect every day but overall, those little moments keep it fresh. Same for Rush-even if they decided to replace 2112 with Show me Don't Tell Me, they are still worth every cent spent on those overpriced tickets.

Oh, well, in that case you're just being picky.

Personally, I never even noticed. My research seems to indicate that 90% of drum tone comes from the heads, tuning, and the guy sitting behind the kit. After you mic it up and apply EQ, reverb, and whatever else they do to those drums at the desk, you're gonna have a hard time telling the difference between kits from a sonic standpoint.

But, what do I know? I love the R30 drum sound. :Neil:

First Rush show was Signals tour, GUP, PW are by far my least fav albums so the first set of the CA tour was pretty lame for me with the exception of Analog Kid which rocked, guy sitting next to me about the same age was the exact opposite, loved the synth era, and i was happy for him, so there ya have it we all like different flavors. The CA matierial was really incredible live, luckily i got to see the show that included SCOG best song of the night! The non synth lovers like me should still go the second set alone is worth the dough imho!
