CE24
I have the song 'Distant Early Warning' on several cds. The original, and on various 'Best Of' type CDs. At the beginning of the cut, on all of them, there is some serious crackling and hissing going on. Kind of like a radio station that isn't quite tuned in. Anyone else notice this? Has there been an explanation?
GeddysMullet
QUOTE (CE24 @ Sep 23 2012, 09:00 AM) I have the song 'Distant Early Warning' on several cds. The original, and on various 'Best Of' type CDs. At the beginning of the cut, on all of them, there is some serious crackling and hissing going on. Kind of like a radio station that isn't quite tuned in. Anyone else notice this? Has there been an explanation? Unfortunately, it's supposed to be that way. I guess it was supposed to be a cool audio effect to enhance the meaning of the song, but it turned out kind of lame.
zappafrank
Since the 1st time I heard the song was via the Chronicles video cassette back in the day, I've always associated the sound with a plane flying overheard or some sort of ominous Cold War weapon/technology. So it always makes perfect sense to me.
greg2112
I vividly remember buying the album the day it came out in 1984, putting the record on, and hearing that sound. I initially freaked thinking I got a damaged copy, but quickly realized its part of the song.
bootlegguy
Really lame effect. If you listen to it on a crappy system you don't really notice it but if I listen on a good system I always turn it down thinking I am clipping, pushing it too hard, and then I remember. kevind2112
Hah. I noticed it the day it came out, and actually returned TWO LPs before I realized that it was recorded that way. Good times...

vital signz
Sounds good on vinyl. Like crap on digital recordings.
HomesickAlien
I once read that the crackling noises at the beginning of DEW were intended to simulate the sound of a Geiger counter.
sdhonda
Huh, I've never even thought of the intro as being an audio glitch.

Me either. I always associated it with static or distortion of receiving a distant radio signal.
