If I try to use a universal rating system for songs that includes all Rush songs, I'll go crazy, as if Xanadu gets a 10, I couldn't give anything on this album a 10, but so many of the songs here are perfect or near perfect, that I can't give them less than a 9 or 10 anyway. If I ever decide to give numerical ratings to every Rush song, these numbers might go down SLIGHTLY when compared to songs from other albums, but still, this is pretty close and shows how incredibly strong this album is! Do I reward all perfect songs with a 10 even though some are MORE perfect than others? When I came up with my long list of perfect albums, some criticized I had too many, that I was too lenient, and their lists were FAR shorter only giving a very few the PERFECT rating, but really how could I not give something a rating of perfect, just because there were albums that were MORE perfect? An album that I truly love from start to finish without any complaints has to be perfect to me, even though some albums are even better than that. Really though, it's not a bad problem to have... This is easy. Our conversation could go something like this... LABT: The ratings all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and... goober: Oh, I see. And most ratings go up to ten? LABT: Exactly. goober: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better? LABT: Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be rating at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your rating. Where can you go from there? Where? goober: I don't know. LABT: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? goober: Rate it up to eleven. LABT: Eleven. Exactly. One better. goober: Why don't you just make ten better and make ten be the top number and make that a little better? [Pause.] LABT: These go to eleven. You joke (nice job, btw ), but seriously, some Rush songs deserve a 15 out of 10. It gets ridiculous to compare songs against each other when some are perfect and others are more perfect, and others are even better than that! 1-10 sometimes seems inadequate with this band. I can't believe how good it is every time I listen to it! BU2B2 gets a 1? It's a pretty cool song to get a one. I liken it to After The Ordeal off SEBTP or Hairless Heart off TLLDOB. It is a nice interlude. The only thing I like about it is the strings sound kind of cool, but otherwise it just doesn't work for me in any way. I hate the lyrics, it's really depressing and most importantly, it drags the story down completely unnecessarily. If the song came between The Wreckers and Headlong Flight, I'd bump that up maybe to a 2 or 3, as at least it would make sense thematically. On its own it doesn't work at all, and as part of the concept it's a real bummer that suddenly puts the story into reverse. It just doesn't work. Still, check out my other numbers. CA really is amazingly consistent, as seen in your ratings. I hope Seven Cities grows on you. I know you like the debut, and for me Seven Cities really sounds like a modern take on What You're Doing or Working Man (Zeppelin-ish blues rock). It's become one of my top 2-3 tracks on the album.
