At ProgArchives it is very close.   Vapor Trails 3.47 | 389 ratings   Snakes & Arrows 3.57 | 430 ratings ProgArchives is odd - very weird ratings for Rush albums in general - ratings seem to be not just for how good an album is, but how progressive rock it is, so the results are a bit skewed...

You're laughing at the Britney comment but using a silly rating system to show how shitty VT is? How does that make any sense? What was RTB's rating? 4.5? Would that show that RTB is better than VT and S & A?

When VT hit my ears I was just so happy that the boys were making music again.

 

I often wonder if some 'magic' is lost because Alex and Ged played to a drum track they programmed instead of with Neil (who added his parts after everything was recorded).

 

Still, no complaints over here.

I really liked Vapor Trails from the first time I heard it, and this was quite a while before I even heard of forums, which is where I learned that the sound on the album is 'awful'. I went through a little period where I thought, gee, the sound is supposed to be crap, but I like it, so maybe I'm not as audiophilic as I thought I was. But I simply like how it sounds: loud, in-your-face, and 'earthy'. I almost let other peoples' opinions sway my own; I'm glad I stuck to my guns and get to enjoy one of my favourite albums. I crank it when the songs play on my ipod, and love the thickness streaming through my headphones.

 

One thought I have (among many others, of course!): sometimes just knowing the sound isn't technically great can make someone dislike the album simply for the fact. What I mean is, if someone sees graphs indicating that the album was mastered poorly, well, it must sound bad, right, because there is proof that it should, and the album is not given a real chance. "It sounds bad because this brick-walled graph shows it's supposed to." Of course, not everyone is into the 'sound' of the album as I am, and that's cool, but as long as the reason is for how it is and not for how one thinks it ought to be.

 

I'm really glad I like Vapor Trails, because I still get a little thrill each time a song randomly pops up on my music player, and the music makes my morning mood. And afternoon and evening moods, too.

The style of the mix suits the album... they went a little overboard with the brickwall effect, but some people get their undergarments into more of a wad then they should.

I agree with you insofar as I think Vapor Trails is a classic Rush release.

 

Of course, I also think Roll The Bones is a classic Rush tune...

Like they just got in a groove with 1 song then wrote a bunch of songs like it, then forgot how to write other kinds of songs. There just no real highs or lows, just sort of in safe cruise control the entire time. Plus the fact that it sounds like some poor garage band recording. So yeah, overall this one is pretty dull for me. Im scoring relative to their other work though. Of course relative to Justin Bieber it's a 10.

I gave it a 5. This album has never really connected with me totally.

 

The sound of most songs are pretty good. The clipping thing I can't really hear, so that doesn't bother me much.

 

The lyrics on this album are cryptic to me for the most part.

 

That said, One Little Victory, Secret Touch and Freeze are great songs. Like Ghost Rider & Nocturne as well.

 

And as I have said in other threads, Out of the Cradle is IMO the worst song Rush has ever written. Take that off the album, and I'd bump my rating to a 6.
