Rick N. Backer
QUOTE (Unobtrusive Companion @ Apr 5 2012, 03:20 PM)I gave it a 6, OLV and Secret Touch are up there with my favourite Rush songs but the rest are good at best. Wouldn't say there's anything atrociously bad on there though. This. Except I'd call them "favorite."
CrossedSignals
QUOTE (CrossedSignals @ Apr 6 2012, 01:51 PM) I give it a 7. My "discovery" album was Moving Pictures so I was into the 70s-80s stuff long before I got into anything after Hold Your Fire. But VT has grown on me a lot over the years since I first heard it, and it's become one of my favorites. Very melodic, great intensity/energy throughout, and it has some of my overall favorite Rush songs (Ceiling Unlimited, Ghost Rider, Earthshine, Vapor Trail). Also their best lyrical/thematic content overall since HYF. As for the mix job... not good, but I definitely prefer oversaturation/overloudness to the flat/dull sound of Test For Echo, so I don't think it's their worst-"sounding" album. Anyway, cheers, it's good to be here. Been lurking for awhile I'd like to upgrade my vote to an 8.
goose
QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Apr 13 2012, 09:14 AM) The lyrics on this album are cryptic to me for the most part. I prefer Neil's more cryptic, personal and poetic lyrics, as opposed to the obvious and preachy ones. Different strokes. Oh, and I like Out of the Cradle. A nice nod to the great and amazing poet Walt Whitman... Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking by Walt Whitman Out of the cradle endlessly rocking, Out of the mocking-bird's throat, the musical shuttle, Out of the Ninth-month midnight, Over the sterile sands and the fields beyond, where the child leaving his bed wander'd alone, bareheaded, barefoot,... One of the reasons I love VT. The lyrics are very personal and, well, lyrical He uses a lot of great imagery too... something lacking from his writing since Grace Under Pressure. jnoble
VT gets credit for it's passion and energy but it's just too long, too chaotic, too intense, too noisy and too dense for me to fully embrace. I do really like 'How it is' and 'The Stars Look Down' and the RIR version of Secret Touch f*ckin' rocks, but I can't fully embrace VT as a whole and never will. It's got some good moments but the negatives almost outweigh the positives. Edited April 15, 2012 by jnoble
Priest of Syrinx
4/10. Good production would boost it to a 5 or 6.

PolarizeMe
It's been awhile since I listened to this...and actually I don't really remember what I thought of it as a whole the last time I did listen to it, but I do know that I like One Little Victory, Ceiling Unlimited, Ghost Rider, How it Is *gasp!*, Vapor Trail, Secret Touch, and Freeze, so that's 7 out of 13 that I like. I'm not going to give it a definite rating yet, but if I judge it based on those songs, and I happen to go back and listen to it again and end up not hating/not liking the other songs as much, I'd give it an 8 including the production in consideration. Edit: Oops, I forgot Earthshine and I also liked it. So that's 8/13 songs. But for now, Vapor Trails gets a N/A rating for me. PolarizeMe
Sorry for the double post, but after listening to it again, I gave it a 7.5 but rounded it to 8. I don't know why, but I like the bass licks on this album a lot even with the poor production. Earthshine, Vapor Trail, and Ceiling Unlimited are my top 3 faves from the album. Out of the rest of the songs I didn't mention, Peaceable Kingdom was my fave. Don't really have a problem with any of the songs from the album. IMO better production would've made this equal to or slightly better than Snakes and Arrows.

Chronos
7. VT is an odd duck in Rush's catalog, but it works for me. There are no skippable tracks. But I understand and do not begrudge anyone's else's hatred for it; de gustibus non est disputandum, and all that. Although I love VT, I couldn't rank it higher than 7 because I had to leave room for everything from "Rush" to "Hold Your Fire"! The Top-Tier (Best) Ceiling Unlimited Secret Touch Nocturne Second Tier (Great) One Little Victory Vapor Trail Earthshine Freeze Third Tier (Good) Peaceable Kingdom The Stars Look Down How It Is Out of the Cradle Fourth Tier (Okay) Ghost Rider Sweet Miracle Edited July 11, 2012 by Chronos

jwoods89
I've always heard this is their worst album, and if that be true then even their worst album is better than most people's best albums.
