Rather than start another ATWAS thread, I am bringing this one back up.

Just listened to it from By-Tor until the end. Been thinking there really is something very special about the album. Can't put my finger on it. It may be the sound as it is very seventies' sounding, but not in a stale or dated way.

There's something very comforting about the album as well. Listening to ATWAS is like going home again.

:blah: "hey goosebumps! get over here right now!.... :notworthy:

I wish I knew what it was. I know you have loved the album since the seventies, but I never heard it until a few years ago. So we can't attribute (as Bathory would) to sentiment my reaction to the album.

It is a very special album without a doubt. :)

Every time I read one of these posts I instantly get covered with goosebumps. There is no more special recording on this planet that means more to me. It was my absolute first (album) love and remains held in my highest esteem. I could never be convinced there was ever anything better and causes me more array of emotions when listening than anything else could or has. I rarely listen to it even now that I can on my wonderful turntable etc because it brings out all emotions including sadness. Don't need that now... :) Thanks dear for again hitting home... :hug2:

The way Lakeside Park segues into 2112 is magical, as are those amazing chords Alex hits when In The End gets heavy - I can't put it into words - and I think if you understand what I mean you know that words mean nothing compared to the feeling ...

Amazing point in the band's career, and for music in general - heck, for life in general :D

My guess..... Live albums back in those days had less direct feeds, and had more live feeds onto tape.... There were probably a few mic's onstage that picked up the "true" sound of the show, and the fact that it all went into analog tape is probably a plus!(and they probably saturated the tape with sound, digital, you have to be careful or you really distort)

To me ESL is so muffled. I rarely listen to it. The sound of ATWAS will always blow it away. JMO. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/trink39.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='trink39.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Agree about the sound. The production of ATWAS is top notch. I usually listen to studio Rush for production reasons. It just sounds better. When I want to listen to live Rush, ATWAS Is my go to album (with ASOH a close second).

It's the only live record where the live versions surpass the studio version on virtually every cut. I don't think the same can be said for ESL. ASOH or DS. Perhaps the VT cuts on Rio are better than the initial studio release

Personally, I think that 99% of the songs Rush does live surpass the studio versions, but I agree with you especially about ATWAS.

Thanks! I didn't want to come off too strong with my first few posts :)

I used to turn on the cruse and crank it on road trips from KS to WI when I would come home on leave.
