adace1
Ok, this one's the last in my series. Here's the way I differentiate between these genres. Basically, doom is just slowed down heavy metal. Stoner rock/metal is doom metal with a psychedelic/heavy blues twist. Sludge is doom metal fused with hardcore punk and/or southern blues. Drone is probably the most extreme soundwise since it's extra slow, extra loud, repetitive doom metal. Of course there's also funeral doom which is usually even slower than drone but not quite as abrasive. So again, please post your picks and feel free to dispute or add to my genre distinctions because they do seem to overlap a lot of the time. To start off here's my picks: Acid Witch Ahab Baroness Bison B.C. Black Sabbath Bongzilla Boris Candlemass Corrosion of Conformity Down Electric Wizard High on Fire Katatonia Kylesa Kyuss Mastodon My Dying Bride November's Doom Orange Goblin Priestess QOTSA Shape of Despair Sleep Spirit Caravan Swallow the Sun The Sword While Heaven Wept Wolfmother

GrandDesigner
Dopethrone by Electric Wizard is an amazing album, yet I've barely scratched the surface of this genre.

adace1
I know that but this is more specific and stricly speaking, doom and its subgenres aren't extreme unlike black metal, death metal, grindcore etc. I wouldn't call bands like Candlemass or Black Sabbath extreme at all. Doom metal definitely has an extreme component (death/doom, funeral doom, drone, most sludge bands) but on the whole I don't think it's extreme. ozzy85
Saw Bison B.C. downtown here a year or two back... good lord. They played w/ Priestess. I'm familiar with a few things on the list, I'll throw a few names. Some will overlap. Kyuss is very popular w/ me... I'll include Desert Sessions stuff and some of Queens Of The Stone Age qualifies. Been playing the s**t out their 1st album lately. Monster Magnet... thought they kinda cleaned up their approach a few years back, check out at least their 1st 3 albums, including 25 Tab. Black Sabbath... well, duhh... Pentagram... wish there was more stuff recorded in the '70's. Not gonna elaborate on each name yet, but here's some more. Maybe you'll agree w/ this list, maybe not... Budgie Preistess The Melvins (Love 'em!) Sir Lord Baltimore The Sword Wolfmother Rose Hill Drive Grand Funk Railroad (pre '72 for the heavy stuff) Cathedral Bloodrock JPT Scare Band (look up King Rat on Youtube...) Lonesome Crow/ Uli Jon Roth-era Scorpions a Few songs by Fu Manchu Tad Captain Beyond Blue Cheer Corrosion Of Conformity I've been kinda making a study of this area of rock/metal, starting around 1970 or so. Maybe I don't know as much about the newer bands. Someone enlighten me.
J0N
The more threads on this kind of stuff the better! Obviously there's a lot of crossover between genres, particularly Doom/Sludge so a lot would fit under either category, really. I've counted bands that formed in the last 5 years or so as 'new' ones. There are an absolute ton of great new(ish) sludge bands out there, though. Doom: Church of Misery Electric Wizard Cathedral Disembowelment Saint Vitus YOB Goatsnake Pentagram My Dying Bride Black Pyramid (New) Pagan Altar Asteriod Minsk Sleep Shrinebuilder (New) Acid King Stoner: Orange Goblin Karma to Burn Kyuss Red Fang (New) Monster Magnet Witchcraft Pelican Colour Haze ASG Valient Thorr Dopefight (New) Sungrazer (New) Brain Police Om Sludgey stuff: Neurosis Melvins Buzzov*en Down Mastodon EyehateGod Kylesa Baroness Kingdom of Sorrow Knut (New) Acid Bath Kruger Corrosion of Conformity Slabdragger (New) High On Fire Weedeater Black Tusk (New) Bongzilla Rwake Zoroaster Black Cobra Isis Cough (New) Ancestors (New) Ramesses Minsk Drone: Boris Sun 0))) Ufomammut Thou Earth Jesu Year of No Light (New) Those are all a good place to start/carry on for a while after http://www.digital-eel.com/blog/images/pic18467.gif Edited December 29, 2011 by J0N

Stormtron
Random thoughts: That first track (too lazy to look at the name) on Bison B.C.'s last album is so awesome. Maybe the only time I've heard a french horn (I think) in metal, but it worked. SLUDGGGGGGE. Isis' album Oceanic is a total classic.
