Screamo suggestions

Bastille Dave

Recommended Posts

I have 13 year olds that like screamo and I'm trying to find some bands that arent so melodramatic and whose lyrics dont make cutting sound so cool (at least thats what alot of the lyrics sound like to me).

anyway, can anyone suggest some bands that are relatively tame and/or positive lyrics?

thanks in advance.

I don't know much screamo but I'd think that A Day to Remember and The Devil Wears Prada would be okay for them to listen to.

A Day to Remember

He is Legend (the album called "I Am Hollywood")

Moneen (some of the lyrics are pretty bad sounding, but it's all tongue in cheek)

Alexisonfire (the "Watch Out!" album)

At the Drive-in (either "In/Casino/Out" or "Relationship of Command")

Thursday ("Full Collapse" is one of the best screamo/post hardcore abums ever. some of it IS pretty depressing though)

The Fall of Troy ("Doppelganger")

Chiodos ("All's Well That Ends Well")

Most of this stuff is from the post hardcore genre, but it's similar to screamo and they might dig some of it. I'd strongly recommend only checking out the albums I listed because tons of bands in this vein tend to have one "holy grail" album surrounded by some other mediocre releases.

Protest The Hero is considered mathcore, which is a more sophisticated cousin of screamo. It's basically progressive metal with punk roots (weird, right?). Their most recent album (Fortress) has songs about, among other things, aliens and Ghengis Khan.

Their first album (Kezia) is a concept album about a girl in a Christian town who is going to be killed for fornication. The story is told from three perspectives: from the girl's, the prison guard's, and the priest.

Pretty far from "cut my wrists and black my eyes." cool.gif

Here are some of their best tunes from Fortress:

Sequoia Throne (I recently learned this song on guitar, and believe me, I now know that these guys have chops).

Wretch

And here's some stuff from Kezia.

if you guys read the whole post, you'd see that it wasnt for me but my kids. I cant make them like Rush or other great bands, they like what their friends like and I just try to find stuff that has some kind of virtue to it.

thanks to those of you who listed some bands and helped.

turn your kids onto Between The Buried and Me.

Aye. Such a great group of musicians as well. They have lyrics that won't make your kids cut themselves. Heck, they may not even get what their lyrics meant if they read them. lol

Dudes, this guys kids are thirteen and into screamo. If that's what they're fixated on right now, they aren't going to jump at metal bands like Protest the Hero and BTBAM. No matter how really, really awesome they may be...

He asked for screamo recs, not "give my kids heavy bands that have more technical songwriting and deeper lyrics" :/

*EDIT* (I'm such an editor lately AM I RIGHT?) to really clarify, here is a song by Protest the Hero:

"Nautical"

here is a "screamo" song by Thursday:

"Understanding in a Car Crash" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0amAVKwF07M

Are they both great songs? I think so, yes. Does PtH sound at all like what Bastille Dave requested? No.... No, not at all...

yeah, having just read a little about Screamo at wiki i have to agree. per wiki:

Characteristics

Second-wave screamo typically makes use of dual guitars and eschews guitar solos, and is most identifiable by its "frequent shifts in tempo and dynamics and by tension-and-release catharses."[30] Unlike the first wave of screamo, the second-wave of screamo bands often compose pop ballads.[36] Second-wave screamo has been described as "mixing the literate, poetic lyrics of emo with a harsher and more metallic brand of sonic thrash"[37] as well as use occasional screamed vocals "as a kind of crescendo element, a sonic weapon to be trotted out when the music and lyrics...reach a particular emotional pitch".[30]

yikes.

listening to alexisonfire and they have a growly heavier sound that if you liked them then i could see someone liking BTBAM?

anyways, good luck with your kids. I have them too and we can only steer them in the right direction for so long.

to a certain extent, i think kids have to discover music on their own and their choice of music should freak out their parents.

listening to the Thursday song Understanding in a car crash. not my cup of tea but they seemed to be decent musicians.

So is Screamo more pop or hardcore?

They are definitely talented musicians, but unfortunately they didn't turn out to be very prolific songwriters. In my opinion at least. After "Full Collapse" (the album containing Car Crash) they went pretty far downhill, except for an EP called "War All the Time".

As for your question, it varies a whole lot. But at its core, the genre is basically a somewhat even mix of the two. Generally always pretty heavy, yet it's almost always got that pop-ish feel to it with a lot of whiny sounding vocals to even out the screaming. Some samples of stuff I listed in my first post:

He is Legend - The Seduction

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-SiDge4hBU&feature=avmsc2

The Fall of Troy - Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles

Chiodos - All Nereids Beware

Probably also not your cup, but all pretty practiced musicians. Actually, make sure you listen to them all the way through, ESPECIALLY the Fall of Troy song, as you might actually really dig it. They have the most "progressive" feel of anything I posted.

Also, to Bastille Dave: if you want any more direct links to songs to test drive them for your kids, let me know. I'd be happy to help out.

pulmonary archery

Good post. Archery is from Alexis self titled album, which I don't like nearly as much as the album I listed (Watch Out). But it has some good tracks, Archery being one of the best. A couple from "Watch Out":

"Hey, It's Your Funeral Mama" (and to Bastille, these lyrics are about racing go-karts, not bleeding out through wrist cuts haha)

"Accidents" (not sure why the hell every youtube vid of this song has police siren effects a couple times, those don't appear on the album version)

Tangy has a pretty good point. Try turning your kids onto these tracks, if they dig it, there's a very good chance they'd get into more metal stuff such as PtH and BTBAM.

As for the "steering your kids" part of the post, pretty damn correct. A TON of my music taste stems from stuff my dad introduced me to when I was a lot younger. This includes stuff like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steely Dan, Wilco, and of course, YOU GUESSED IT, Rush. But a whole slew of other stuff in my musical tastes scares the living balls off him... that part includes, you guessed it again, a bunch of stuff with "extreme" vocals (growling, screaming, you know the drill). But at the same time, he never tried to cut me off or limit me from that stuff. He let me run wild and free. So despite the fact that maybe they're just not into Rush, let them develop their own taste. But never hesitate to introduce them to something you know and love. You never know, they might end up knowing it and loving it too.

All three of those seemed good to me. He Is Legend and The Fall Of Troy were more to my liking although the Chiodos was interesting and at times reminded me a little of Rage Against The Machine?

No problem at all, recommending and being recommended music is one of my favourite pastimes!

Definitely check out the entirety of He is Legends "I Am Hollywood" album as well as FoT's "Doppelganger". I Am Hollywood is actually really versatile, as proven by songs like this:

"Dinner With A Gypsy" (GREAT bassline, holy damn)

Their second album, "Suck Out the Poison" went in a pretty different direction. It sounded a lot more metal-esque and also included some southern influences. I personally don't think they pulled it off that well, but they gained a lot of new fans with the new sound. It did have a couple of amazing tracks, my favourite being this:

"Stampede" Skip to 1:45 of the video. For some unknown reason, this youtube user decide to pair it with footage from the movie "300" and gave it a ridiculously long movie footage intro. He also f*cks up the ending of the song with it, but it's the only decent quality studio version I could find

*EDIT* Also have to say, Chiodos doesn't remind at all of RatM, but hey, "eye of the beholder" is just about my favourite expression of all time. If you dig it or can appreciate it, then that's what's important.
